- 184 с. ; 12о.

Aquatinte « Grand Entry of the Allied Sovereigns into Paris, on the 31, March 1814 ». Published by R. Bowyer, Pall Mall, 1815. Ровинский I, стлб. 174, 768

Kritzinger, P H, and R D McDonald In the Shadow of Death (1904) 220 x 145 [See the next lot for a later Afrikaans translation of this famous title] Although the spine is sunned and the boards are lightly rubbed and bumped, this copy is in very good overall condition: tight binding; endpapers sunned but no text, plate or tissue-guard foxing. A few unobtrusive pencil markings are in the text. There is an unrecognised owner signature and the words `Victoria West 15/12/04` in ink on the front free endpaper. vii + 178 pp of text + frontispiece and seven plates: two of the authors; `an interesting group` [of 10] including Commandant Wessels and Lieutenant Troskie; General de Wet; ex-President Steyn; and two of Commandants Theron and Fouche. Kritzinger, P H, and R D McDonald In die Skaduwee van die Dood (1939) 210 x 160 This Afrikaans translation, by the son of the co-author of the English original, Ds [the Rev] R D McDonald, was published 35 years later [see Lot 37] and after the death of General Kritzinger. In his Foreword, R D McDonald notes that in the Anglo-Boer War he had been not only a `veld preacher` but a military secretary, first to General Kritzinger until he was injured, and then to General Louis Botha until the conclusion of the peace. On the cover and spine, `Ds R D McDonald` is credited with sole authorship, but on the title-page he is joined by `Generaal P H Kritzinger`. Compared with `In the Shadow of Death`, there is some additional material, including an extra plate. The light grey cloth-boards, with green and brown lettering and design to the upper board and green lettering to the spine, are stained (see image) and the head and foot of the spine are soft. The binding is shaken and there is a crack between two sections, but the tapes are secure. There are several names on the front free endpaper, including another member of the McDonald family (from which this copy came). The title-page, the next leaf and the bottom page edge are foxed but the text (vii + 246 pp) and illustrations are unmarked and undiscoloured. An interesting book, especially in conjunction with the original English title. Good Cape Town Nasionale Pers 1939 Reserve: $25 Click here to view further details and to bid

Van der Linden, Johannes Regtsgeleerd, Practicaal en Koopmans Handboek ([1806]) 210 x 140 Although we have not traced any other copies of this now rare early 19th century Roman-Dutch law treatise, `print on demand` copies of a similar title, by `Joannes` van der Linden and Johannes Allart, are listed on the AbeBooks website. From the signature on the half-title page and the initials on the top page edge, this copy is likely to have been in the ownership of the J E R de Villiers who was a former judge-president of the Orange Free State and an Acting Appeal Court judge, and who referred to it in some of his judgments. The title-page has been lost and, with it, the name of the publisher, but this copy seems to have been published in Amsterdam in 1806. Johannes van der Linden’s “Regtsgeleerd, Practicaal en Koopmans Handboek” is referred to in R W Lee’s “Introduction to Roman-Dutch Law” (Oxford, 1931) as both one of the last authorities on “the old [Roman-Dutch] law” and the earliest on “the new law”. When this copy was found, in an auction job-lot, the covers were badly damaged, but the contents were sufficiently valuable to justify rebinding. This has been done in brown goatskin with an abbreviation of the title gilt lettered on a spine panel, new red-and-green head and tail bands, new endpapers and a new marker ribbon. The contents of lxxiv + 588 pp include an introduction, text divided into four books, and an index. The introduction includes a 30 pp annotated bibliography of Roman and Roman-Dutch law, including three of Van der Linden’s other titles, published in Leiden between 1794 and 1803. In addition to the missing title-page, part of the half-title and half of the last leaf of the index have been lost and a small section of pp 101/102 has been cut out. There are a few brief marginal notes in ink, probably by the same previous owner. There are brown stains not affecting the text on some twenty early leaves, but the pages are not foxed and the text is otherwise bright and undiscoloured. Already intrinsically rare, this book is unique in its present form. Good [Amsterdam] Unknown [1806] Reserve: $150 Click here to view further details and to bid

John Hutchinson A BOTANIST IN SOUTHERN AFRICA 252 x 160 x 40 mm An account of the author`s botanical expeditions to various parts of Africa. Hutchinson`s background as a botanical specialist from Kew was well known, and in South Africa he was given a very friendly reception by eminent South African botanists. But it was his association with General Smuts, who was also a botanist of note, that makes this book so interesting. Smuts accompanied him in the Northern Transvaal and across the Limpopo to Zimbabwe, and in Tanganyika (Tanzania). Pages i-xii pp 1-686. Frontispiece portrait of General Smuts. Copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, sketches, line drawings of botanical details. Folding maps. Full page maps to indicate regional distributions and the regions visited by the author. Dark green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Slightly scuffed at base of spine. Illustrated Dust jacket has cracked on folds but has been neatly repaired with brown and white paper reinforcements. Front and back endpapers are browned but the rest of the book has no apparent foxing. This is an unusually interesting book in Very Good condition.
