Attributed to Charles Robert Ashbee, a Guild of Handicraft yellow metal pearl set enamel necklace in original fitted case, circa 1895, comprising a double row of trace link chain with push-in box snap, spaced with 8 graduating quatrefoil panels each as a stylised flower head enamelled in deep blue and set to the centre with a single baroque pearl in an enclosed claw setting, supporting a dropper section to match, nominally rectangular shaped similarly set with a single pearl and suspended from two short lengths of chain, this in turn supports a single pearl dropper, unmarked and unsignedCondition: In very good condition, noting one samll chip to the enamel on the right hand side (as you look at it) of the suspended pendant, the other light areas in the images are reflection. Literature: C R Ashbee: Architect, Designer & Romantic Socialist, Alan Crawford, publ Yale University Press, 1985, page 353, plate 177 Other Notes: Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942) founded the Guild and School of Handicraft in 1888. The Guild, operating as a co-operative, produced leather, furniture, silver and metalwork, jewellery and books - much of the work based on Ashbee's designs. The revival of traditional techniques, education of working people and encouraging satisfaction through work were key principles of the Arts and Craft movement and the Guild. In 1902, the Guild (150 people, the Guildsmen and their families) moved from East London to Chipping Campden. Ashbee believed that living a simple, collective life in rural surroundings would add to the health and well-being of the craftsmen and consequently, the work they produced. Although the work of the Guild was widely exhibited, increasing financial difficulties from 1905 eventually resulted in the voluntary liquidation of the Guild in 1908. The original design for this necklace is illustrated in a page from Guild’s first catalogue published in about 1895. It is described as a necklace of Blue Enamel set with Pearls This necklace also reflects the naturalistic themes developed by Ashbee with the pendant consisting of a single stone set between leaves or wings.
R Russell (British, 20th Century) Portrait of John Cooper Powys (1872-1963) oil on canvas 59 x 49cm (23 x 19in) Provenance: The collection of the late Eric Stevens, removed from Hampstead, London John Cooper Powys, the unsung giant of English fiction, was a notable novelist and poet. He published his first collection of poems at the age of 24 and went on to write his first novel in 1915. Powys has been regarded as the successor to Thomas Hardy, to whom he dedicated his first novel. Born into a family of eleven children, his two brothers and a sister were also talented and well-known writers. Powys graduated from Cambridge in 1894 and soon took up a job as an itinerant lecturer for Cambridge and Oxford Universities. In 1905, he went on to lecture in America, where many of his novels were first published. He moved back home with his American partner in 1934 and settled in Wales.
§ Roy Frederick Carnon (British, 1911-2002) Eel Brook Common signed "R Carnon" and titled on the reverse oil on canvas 13 x 19cm (5 x 7in) Other Notes: Roy Frederick Carnon, born in England in 1911, grew up in Isleworth, London, briefly attending art school in Chiswick. He became an illustrator, working mainly for advertising agencies. During the Second World War, he continued to sketch even when working as a fireman during the London Blitz. He subsequently joined the RAF ground crew and was dispatched to Africa, India and the Far East. After returning to civilian life, Carnon continued to work in advertising, as well as producing book covers and jackets, particularly for Corgi Books. He was responsible for a number of covers for Edgar Rice Boroughs' science fiction novels published by Four Square Books in 1961-65 and illustrated "Famous Fighting Aircraft" for the Collins Wonder Colour Books series in 1964. In 1965, Carnon joined the team responsible for producing concept drawings, sketches and paintings for 2001: A Space Odyssey. His official designation was 'scientific design specialist and visual concept artist'. For this he was responsible for visualising space craft, film sets and the iconic 'wheel' space station. After 2001, his first foray into the movie business, Carnon worked on other films including the Bond movies, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, Ladyhawke, all shot in the MGM facilities in Borehamwood and Shepperton, London. In addition to all his film work, Roy Carnon was a prolific and unusually versatile painter and also wrote some poetry. He had the ability to turn from set design to portraits, from technical drawing to lively figure drawing, sketches and landscapes. Some of his film artwork is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. He died at Mere in Wiltshire in 2002. Perhaps a little dirty.
