Eines von 40 Exemplaren vor der Verstählung der Platte. Auf leicht chamoisfarbenem Japan. 29,6 x 23,4 cm (11,6 x 9,2 in). Papier: 47,6 x 32,3 cm (18,8 x 12,7 in).Blatt 19 der Mappe `Gesichter`. Das Werk erschien als dreizehnter Druck der Mareés Gesellschaft (mit dem Trockenstempel), im Verlag R. Piper & Co. München. [KD].Eine der wichtigsten Radierungen des Künstlers in einem prachtvollen Druck.Gegen den Widerstand der Familie setzt Max Beckmann am Ende seiner Schulzeit durch, dass er Maler werden darf. Seine Ausbildung erhält er von 1900 bis 1903 an der Großherzoglichen Kunstschule in Weimar, hauptsächlich bei dem norwegischen Landschaftsmaler Carl Frithjof Smith. Nach dem Studienabschluss und einigen Aufenthalten in Paris, Genf und Florenz lässt sich Beckmann 1907 in Berlin nieder und wird Mitglied der dortigen Sezession. Bei Kriegsausbruch meldet er sich freiwillig als Berufssoldat und wird daraufhin nach Ostpreußen und Flandern geschickt. Als Beckmann 1915 vom Militär entlassen wird, zieht er nach Frankfurt am Main, wo er bis 1933 an der Städel-Kunstschule unterrichtet. Die Erforschung des eigenen Ichs, die mit den vielen Selbstbildnissen von Rembrandt einen ersten Höhepunkt in der europäischen Kunst erreicht, zieht sich von da an wie ein roter Faden durch die Historie von Malerei und Grafik. Besonders die deutschen Künstler der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts sahen darin einen wichtigen Schritt der Selbstfindung. Stellvertretend für viele sei neben Beckmann auch Käthe Kollwitz genannt, die in der Befragung des eigenen Ichs die künstlerische Herausforderung ihres Lebens sah. Max Beckmann in seinen selbstkritischen Eigenporträts bildet da keine Ausnahme. Fordernd und zugleich zweifelnd ist der Blick auf das eigene Ich gerichtet. Fast sezierend geht Beckmann an die schwierige Aufgabe, die Eigenheiten seiner Persönlichkeit herauszuarbeiten, und so fokussiert der Blick dieses Selbstporträts eine imaginäre Ferne, in der sich der Betrachter wie auch der Künstler verliert. Der zwingenden Suggestion dieser forschenden Augen kann sich jedoch kaum jemand entziehen. Die Selbstporträts sind die bedeutendsten Arbeiten im grafischen Schaffen von Max Beckmann. Sie werden mit Recht zu den herausragenden Leistungen in der deutschen Grafik der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts gezählt.Mit zunehmender Macht der Nationalsozialisten erfährt der Künstler in dieser Zeit eine immer stärkere Diffamierung, die schließlich neben der Entlassung aus dem Lehramt dazu führt, dass man seine Werke aus den öffentlichen Sammlungen in Deutschland entfernt. Unter dem politischen Druck emigriert Beckmann 1937 nach Holland. Auch hier schränken ihn allerdings die politischen Umstände ein und so ist das Angebot einer Gastprofessur in St. Louis 1947 willkommener Anlass, um in die USA zu übersiedeln. Im Anschluss an diesen Auftrag an der School of Fine Arts der Washington University lehrt Beckmann ab 1949 kurzzeitig an der Universität von Colorado in Boulder, dann an der Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York und im Sommer 1950 am Mills College in Oakland, Kalifornien. Am 27. Dezember des selben Jahres stirbt Max Beckmann in New York. Der Frühstil Beckmanns steht unter dem Einfluss des deutschen Impressionismus, hierbei v.a. Lovis Corinths, dann führt ihn das Kriegserlebnis zu einem expressionistischen, der Neuen Sachlichkeit nahen Ausdruck. Der Individualismus seines Stils äußert sich seit den 20er Jahren in einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit der Dingwirklichkeit, welche sich formal in einem expressiven, die Form umreißenden grafischen Gerüst niederschlägt.
