Δ Frederick Gore RA (1913-2009)View from the terrace - Fornalutx, Majorcaoil on canvas82 x 102cmSon of the artist Spencer Gore (1878–1914), Frederick never knew him as sadly he died only a few months after his birth. Spencer, was the first president of the Camden Town Group and best known for his landscapes and interiors with their influence from French Post-Impressionism. Frederick shared his father’s passion for this period and it can be seen in his expression of colour and light in his Mediterranean views, particularly those painted in Majorca.Frederick Gore visited the Spanish island regularly during the 1970s, and for several summers he rented a house at Fornalutx. On the extreme left of this painting we see a little of the house as the remaining buildings and landscape are his viewpoint from the terrace. We see blazes of colours from the purples, blues and greens of the mountains, through to the orange and green fields and the red and yellow buildings. There is a very strong compositional foundation, which helps the eye dart about though the glowing colours. This is a really captivating work due to its large scale and vivid palette and the lot is enhanced by a lovely note written to the present owner by the artist in 1989 where he describes in detail the exact location depicted.'How nice to hear about a painting of some years ago – nineteen seventies, I suppose. Yes Majorca, painted from a house quite a long way up the Callé del Monté which leads straight up from the little main square at Fornalutx - 6 kilometres up towards the mountain (Puig Major) from Soller. The two peaks are Lóffra above Biniaraix the village closer to Soller in the same valley as Fornalutx. There is a plateau with a bit of cultivation, a hunting lodge and usually a bull and some sheep up there, behind the peaks, and an interesting walk to Soller along the heights seen on R. The house at Fornalutx belongs to a John Polimeni - Londoner of Sicilian extraction & I rented the house during several summers. Very good views on every side. Painted from the terrace above the house. A bit of the house shows on the extreme left….'Condition ReportIn good condition, under uv light no obvious signs of restoration or retouching.

Roy de Maistre (Australian, 1894-1968)A vase of midsummer flowerssigned 'R. de Maistre' l.l., oil on canvas99 x 73cmProvenance: The artist;collection of Dora Thomas, c.1940s;gifted to current vendor as a wedding present in 1973.An early pioneer of colour theory and abstraction in his native Australia, de Maistre initially studied at the Royal Art Society in Sydney. After the First World War, he developed his concept of colour by working with shell-shocked soldiers and creating colour combinations to soothe them. He was also a talented musician, playing the viola and violin at Sydney’s Conservatorium. Music formed part of his colour theory as the idea of harmonising colour (as composers do with notes) appealed to him.In 1923, he won a scholarship to travel to Europe. Greatly influenced by European modernism, in particular cubism, de Maistre settled in London permanently in 1930.He first met Francis Bacon in 1930, and in 1932 the pair both took neighbouring studios in Chelsea. De Maistre has been heralded as one of the key influences on Bacon’s development in this early period, encouraging his collecting habits, use of photographic material when painting, and expanding his art historical knowledge. The two are believed to have had a brief affair but were primarily friends. The influence of both artists upon each other is clear in works such as de Maistre’s ‘Francis Bacon’s Studio’ (1932). They exhibited together twice at 17 Queensberry Mews West (1930) and Thos. Agnew & Sons (1937).In 1960, de Maistre achieved his first retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery. His work is also held in the Tate Britain and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia. De Maistre’s ‘Stations of the Cross’ hangs in Westminster Cathedral. This is the larger of two paintings on offer in this auction. Its vibrant reds, yellows, blues, purples and white depict an eclectic summer bouquet with blue and white stocks, roses, yellow ranunculus, black-eyed Susans and scabiosa. The vase is placed on an angular table with an abstracted screen in the background, it is reflected in the table in cubist forms that are echoed in the flower heads. It speaks of de Maistre’s distinctive interpretation of the cubist movement.Sold separately is a smaller still life of white lilacs by the artist, softer in comparison to the first and executed in a more simplified palette, de Maistre still employs expressionistic strokes to create interest in the shadowed background and space around the vase. Both paintings were gifted as a wedding present to the current owners in 1973. They had been acquired by a family friend in the 1940s directly from the artist.Condition ReportFramed size: 115 x 89cm.Light surface dirt, a small bulge to canvas upper right corner, another to the lower left edge where something has fallen in between the stretcher and the canvas, probably a wedge. There is a little craquelure emerging in small isolated areas. Possibly a little discolouration to varnish along top, slight stain to frame, otherwise generally appears to be in good condition, under UV light, there are some small areas which fluoresce, however it seems likely these are the result of the artist's pigments rather than anything else as generally it is in its original state.

AN EARLY GEORGE III CARVED PINE AND CARTON PIERRE WALL MIRROR CIRCA 1760The frame carved with acanthus carved C-scrolls, the cresting with confronting acanthus carved C scrolls, the shaped apron centred by a flowerheadapproximately 282cm high, 132cm wide Provenance:The Lower Library, Stoke Edith House, HerefordshirePossibly the Messel Family collection at Nymans Thence by descent to Oliver Messel until supplied to Frederick Baden Watkins for Flaxley Abbey This painted multi-plated mirror with acanthus-carved foliate scrolls bears a label on the back, which reads: 'Saved from fire at Stoke Edith Mansion- Herefordshire' and 'carved by ladies of mansion during winter evenings 18th C'. Although there are few records of women undertaking woodcarving as a genteel pursuit in the 18th century, Elizabeth Creed of Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire, is known to have practised this art in the 1720s, and it became evermore popular in the 19th century (N. Riley, The Accomplished Lady: A \History of Genteel Pursuits c. 1660-1860, Plymouth, 2017, pp. 394-395). A near-identical mirror, possibly the same but with carving missing, was photographed in the Lower Library at Stoke Edith in the early 20th century (Historic England BB87/10404). The mirror is typical of the mid-18th century. The model probably derives from Continental rococo designs by architect-designers like François de Cuvilliés the Elder, published in Livres de Lambris, c. 1738. Some of the first English rococo designers to introduce multi-plated foliate-carved mirrors were James Whittle, 'the famous Matthias Lock, a most excellent Carver, and reputed to be the best Ornament draughts-man in Europe' and Thomas Johnson.  By the 1740s-50s, the creation of the largest rococo mirrors was a complicated process. Mirror plates of different shapes and sizes were retained by carved sub-frames, which linked the whole design both structurally and visually. According to Robert Campbell: 'There are a set of Joiners who make nothing but Frames for Looking-Glasses and Pictures, and prepare them for the Carvers. This requires but little Ingenuity or Neatness, as they only join the Deals roughly plained, in the Shape and Dimensions in which they are required... The Frame-Maker sends the Frame thus prepared to the Carver: For there are a Class of Carvers who do nothing else but carve Frames for Looking-Glasses. There are two Sorts of Carving upon these kind of Frames: One Sort of them is carved in the Wood entirely, and is designed to be painted or gilded with Burnish-Gold: In the other, the Figures are first roughly cut out in the Wood, then the whole is covered with two or three Coats of Whiting with a Brush, then finishes his Figures, by making such Flourishes in the Whiting as is agreeable to his Pattern' (R. Campbell, The London Tradesman, London, 1747, p. 174).  Condition Report: (damaged, formerly gilt, restored) Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 290

A GEORGE II LEAD FIGURAL GARDEN SUN DIAL ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN CHEERE AFTER JOHN NOST MID 18TH CENTURY The solid gnomon and dial above the crouching figure of Father Time or Kronos, the dial signed "B MARTIN, LONDON" and indistinctly engraved with the Boevey escutcheon of arms 152cm high overall, the base 92cm wide 74cm deepProvenance:Possibly acquired by Thomas Crawley-Boevey, 1st Bt. of Flaxley (1709-69), at the time of his marriage to Susanna (née Lloyd) in May 1743, and by descent at Flaxley Abbey, Gloucestershire, until sold and removed from the premises- Flaxley Abbey, Gloucestershire: Catalogue of the Valuable Contents, Bruton, Knowles & Co., 29 March - 5 April 1960, lot 1009.Returned to Flaxley Abbey by Frederick Baden WatkinsLiterature: Arthur W. Crawley-Boevey, A Brief Account of the Antiquities, Family Pictures and Other Notable Articles at Flaxley Abbey, co. Gloucester, Bristol, 1912, p. 36, no. 3.Mrs. A. Gatty, The Book of Sun-dials, London, 1900, 4th edition, p. 472.R. Bowling, 'Sundial Supporters Revisited', BSS Bulletin [The British Sundial Society], vol. 19, September 2007, p. 126.This 18th century lead sundial was described as 'The Flaxley Sundial' when it was sold from the Flaxley Abbey estate in 1960. The lead figure of Father Time is depicted as a bearded old man kneeling under the weight of a bronze dial that bears the Boevey coat of arms. He is shown with wings to represent how 'time flies'. 'B. Martin', possibly the maker, is incised on the dial. He is shown with wings to represent how 'time flies'. 'B. Martin', possibly the maker, is incised on the dial. It's possible that the maker of the sundial was Benjamin Martin who worked between 1738 and 1777 from one address in Chichester and five in Fleet Street and latterly as Benjamin Martin & Son until 1782 when the firm went bankrupt. At the time of cataloguing only two similar sundials of this particular kneeling form of Time were noted. One, with receipt dated for 1743 by John Cheere, was noted at Blair Castle, Perthshire (RCAHMS SC 763911). As the lead was piece-moulded, Cheere could assemble parts in new configurations; this was supposedly the case with the Blair Castle example, which is adapted from John Nost I's (fl. 1677-1710) Indian sun dial at Melbourne Hall, Derbyshire (I. Roscoe, A biographical dictionary of sculptors in Britain, 1660-1851, New Haven and London, 2009, p. 262).Another version of Father Time was formerly at St. Osyth Priory, Essex- however it has been noted that this one was of a slightly different form- with just one hand holding the plate above. It was listed in the house sale of 1920 as: 'A fine XVII cent. cast lead figure of Time supporting a sundial, 3' 6" high on a square stone base' (In fact, it was 18th century and life-size). The sundial failed to sell, and remained at St. Osyth Priory until 1986; its present whereabouts are unknown, and no image is extant (R. Bowling, 'Sundial Supporters Revisited', BSS Bulletin [The British Sundial Society], vol. 19, September 2007, p. 126).Subsequent research has shown an almost identical sundial to this lot- offered by Seago Antique Garden Furniture, 22 Pimlico Road London, and illustrated at the back of John Davis "Antique Garden Ornament" (Antique Collector's Club 1991). The Seago lead statue of Father Time is recorded with provenance for Fonthill House, Wiltshire, home of Alderman William Beckford. Unfortunately its current whereabouts is unknown and the maker of the sundial plate unrecorded.A related sundial known as the 'Blackamoor' is recorded in the gardens of the Inner Temple, London (W. Lethaby, Leadwork, old and ornamental, and for the most part English, London, 1893, pp. 101-111). This sundial is signed on the dial 'Ben Scott in the Strand Londini Fecit' and '1731'. It is almost certainly after an earlier model by John Nost I, who at the turn of the century, was awarded a contract for an extensive programme of sculptural works at Hampton Court Palace, Middlesex, including a 'Blackamore' sundial. The records state that Nost I was employed 'for modelling a figure of a Blackamore kneeling being 5 ft high holding up a sundial', and for 'casting the said Blackamore in hard metal and repainting'. Another 'blackamoor' sundial attributed to Nost I based on the Melbourne Hall example sold Sotheby's, London, 10 July 2014, lot 140 (£56,250 inc. premium). The tradition of casting statues in lead dates back to the Roman period, but in Britain it was particularly prevalent in the late-17th and 18th centuries when lead figures featured predominantly as garden statuary. Nost I founded the original lead figure manufactory in London, at the Hyde Park Corner end of Piccadilly. This neighbourhood became the centre for the production of lead figures with a number of lead yards in operation, including that of Nost's cousin, John Nost II (d. 1729), who took over the family business, and John Cheere, known for his life-size lead figures that were often painted 'to resemble nature'. It is additionally noted that the Blair Castle version of this may have been painted to resemble marble.Condition Report: Weathering, wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Comparison with the two photographed similar examples at Blair Castle () and with Seago in 1991 (see additional images) shows that each is mounted on a stone plinth base, right foot down and the left overlapping at the back. In this example however the left ankle has a bracing rest, the right foot is slightly elevated and an iron rod runs up from the plinth into the body. Evidently the rod and possibly the plinth are therefore later- part of a conservation process to ensure greater stability to the figure. In each photographed comparable example there is damage or repair evident to the legs/feet. This lot shows old remedial and conservation work- notably around the left ankle, foot and knee. However weathering has resulted in colour variance to the surface throughout- making it difficult to determine whether further work was carried out on the right leg, limb extremities and around mould-junction points. There does seem to have been restoration work at the shoulders, and elbows- and slight feather crack to left elbow. Certainly with this lot there is a notable colour difference to the fingers of both hands- a natural weak spot- which suggests old repairs. Additionally, there has been discussion as to the colour and form of the sundial circular surround. Comparison with the other two shows a similar colour variance and smoothness- a paler slightly greener colour- suggesting it may have been cast slightly differently from the main body for stability and accuracy to accommodate the sundial plate. The plate itself is not fixed in place- with vacant screw holes. The plate has strong scattered verdigris patina and the markings are faint and rubbed.
