A Victorian oak `Chartist riot` truncheon, painted in gilt on an ebonised ground with `V R`, a crown, `10 APRIL 1848`, above the City of London coat of arms and `W.B`, the top of the ribbed handle painted with a gilt band, 51.5cm. This truncheon was issued to special constables during the 1848 Chartist riots and the 1868 Fenian uprisings. On the 10th April 1848 a new Chartist Convention organised a mass meeting on Kennington Common which would present a petition to Government. Over one hundred thousand special constables were recruited to bolster the force to stop any uprising.
A Victorian red silk and metal thread banner, on a damask ground, embroidered with silver and gold threads with three crowns above the badge of the Yeomen of the Guard, flanked by the Royal cypher `V R`, and `PENINSULA WATERLOO`, with a metal thread fringe, 75.5 x 83.5cm. Provenance: Field Marshal Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916) and thence by descent.

Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine. 610-641. AV Solidus (20.5mm, 4.33 g, 5h). Uncertain eastern military mint, 5th officina. Struck circa 613-616/8. ?? ?? ??RACCI?S ?R ??RA CONSt P P AVG (? and t retrograde), crowned facing busts of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, each wearing chlamys; cross above / VICTORI–A AV??, cross potent set on three steps; ?//CONOB. Bendall, Jerusalem, pl. XLI, 20 (this coin); DOC –; MIB –; cf. SB 929. Superb EF, slightly double struck, lamination on reverse. Extremely rare. Regarding this and lots 1302 and 1304, Bendall (p. 317) notes: “There also exist other extremely rare solidi of Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine struck at this time, all in the east in the experience of the writer, which are illustrated here (figs. 18-21), which can surely only indicate that in the troubled times between 613 and 616/8 there may have been a number of ephemeral mints connected with Heraclius’ campaigns in the east.”
