A Territorial Gunner he landed in France 4th October 1915. The Silver Wound Badge with the Trio number 379543 was issued to 43619 Herbert Ashley Robins RA. (14 AFA Brigade) Enlisted October 1914 and Discharged (Wounds) 31-7-1918.

Named to 7592 Pte A V Norton Bedford Regt. British War & VIctory Medals named to 114613 Pte A V Norton MGC. Also an Ancient Order of Foresters Masonic Award. Inscribed on the reverse, Court Energy 6870 presented to Bro A V Norton for obtaining New Members 1905. A Masonic? Volunteers War Service Award, for South Africa. Ornate bars read For Special War Services, Court Energy no 6870. From Essendon Hertfield Herts . His Military Medal was in the London Gazette of the 29th August 1918. An original copy of the award reads: C Coy 18th Battalion M.G.C. BEF. 'Pte A V Norton 114613 has been awarded the Military Medal for Bravery and Devotion to Duty 23rd March 1918. Whilst at Friers Wood he alone manned a machine gun in an advanced position for six hours, giving invaluable help to the troops he was covering and preventing the enemy from advancing under cover of the wood. During the whole of this time he set a splendid example of disregard fro danger under heavy shellfire until wounded. H W Burdin OC 'B'[ Section. An original Newspaper cutting repeats these detail but also adds this. 'Essendon'.M.M for Pte Norton. A report has been received from the OC 18th Battn MGC, that Pte Norton has been awarded the Military Medal and Parchment. Pte Norton served in the South Africa War with the 1st herts Volunteers, this is the second time he has been wounded. A 1923 dated letter from the French Military Attache states. Your letter has been communicated to me by the Ambassador to ascertain it would not be possible to do anything in order to reward your gallant conduct while you were assisting French Troops on the 23rd March 1918. I should have been glad to recommend you for a Croix de Guerre, but an agreement between our governments was stopped some time ago, etc. Born in September 1879, he died the 14th September 1941 in Hertfordshire. A mounted 1914 Star Trio named to his brother 17165 Spr F T Norton RE. Frederick Thomas Norton served in France from the 15th August 1914, discharged with a Silver Wound Badge. He was ruled ineligible for the under fire clasp. Proceeding abroad with the 8th Railway Company Royal Engineers he was invalided home 27th November 1914. Discharged his form marked Reliable. A framed original parchment 4" x 6.1/2" reads thus. No 114613 Pte A V Norton 18th Battn Machine Gun Corps. 'I have read with great pleasure the reoprt of your Regimental Commander and Brigade Commander Regarding Your Gallant Conduct and Devotion to Duty on 23rd March 1918. He served in France with the 3rd Battalion from the 23rd November 1914. He was awarded Wound Badge 398655 and Discharged (Wounds) May 1918. With copied details.

A GV issue Long Service Good Conduct Medal named to 942025 Sjt P W Green Beds & Herts Regt. Percy W Green was a native of Cardington, Bedford. A regular soldier he arrived in France on the 26th August 1914. His Medal and Emblems were confirmed on the Beds & Herts Depot Roll, of entitlement. A press copy of the letter written to Mrs Chandler (wife) regarding the death of his best friend Arthur Chandler, to a German Sniper is with the medals. From the Spaldwick Newspapers and Huntingdonshire Heroes of the First World War, by John Bell. Dear Mrs Chandler, Regarding Arthur. He died on the morning 16th instance (March) at half-past three. I had been talking to him about an hour previous. It was very dark, and hearing a shot, I asked him if he was shot . He said 'I think so'. Those were the only words he spoke. I found he had been shot in the neck, and only lived for 10 minutes. He was the most popular man in our company. He was my best chum and the bravest amongst us. You will be able to tell your boys when they grow up, how bravely their father fought and died for his King and Country. Permission was asked by the men of his section to bury him, which was granted. He was carried to the Chateau at Ypres and a cross was placed over his grave. You have the sympathy of the whole of 'C' Company. Cpl Green 1st Bedfords. Ypres. France 22/3/1915. Percy Green was Arthurs closest friend they served in the same Company until Arthurs death, Percy survived the war. From Arthurs letters home he mentions the heavy fighting the Bedfords endured during the autumn of 1914. Percy Green with his section, held as Railway Bridge for seven hours against the Germans, until shells blew it up. Then they went into a house and had a good time shooting Germans until the guns found them again. They were upstairs and a shell came through the roof and blew the floor out, and they all went downstairs without using the stairs. Then they all got safely away Relief for his Company was due at midnight on the 16th March 1915, but before that the Bedfords came under sniper and shellfire, suffering 3 dead including Arthur and 11 wounded

Interred in New Irish farm Cemetery, St Jean-Les-Ypres. Husband of Gertrude Rentell of 90, Bayham St, Camden Town. With an original 1919 letter from Harrods, addressed to his widow Gertrude Rentall of 11 St Martins Place, Camden Town. Dtaed July 1919 it concerns the Harrods Staff Benefit Fund dispersal. Her entitlement was £16:2s:0d With other copied paperwork.

Named to 5739 Pte R E Blow Somerset L.I, the bars being Cape Colony-Orange Free State and Transvaal. A Kings South Africa Medal named to 5739 Bglr R Blow Somerset L I. Lance Corporal Reginald Edgar Blow served in South Africa for 2 years and 10 months. He was wounded in the leg (Accident Man states Insect Bite) in South Africa in 1901, hospitalised for 38 days. A native of Newport Isle of Wight, his occupation shown as a labourer. He was discharged aged 28 years in October 1909, to reside at 37 Sidney Terrace, Hunny Hill, Isle of Wight. Total service 9 years and 9 months. Reason for Discharge Gonorrhoea. His notes state this condition originated in Devonport in 1908. Neither caused nor aggravated by service, climate or exposure on duty. Likely to be permanent, prevents 1/2 (one half) No Syphilis. Pension 8d per day for 27 months, final. A regular soldier who enlisted in the colours in December 1906, who was taken prisoner of war in October (24th) 1914. He had landed on the 7th October and was erving in the 7th Division, 21st Brigade near Ypres. After a return home at the end of the war, he continued to serve and as Pte 5562117 he was awarded a Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1926 He was discharged from service in December 1927.

He applied for these medals in September 1923, address 9 Longspring, Harebreaks, Watford. He had enlisted on the 16/10/1899 giving his age as 18 years. He also served in the 4/1st Hertfordshire Regiment, before being commissioned in 17/6/1918. In 1920 he transferred to the Territorial Forces, aged 40 years with the rank of Company Sergeant Major. He was hospitalised after serving for 1yr 9 months with the Field Force in April 1917, suffering from 'Inflammation of connective tissue feet'. 10 days on the Hospital Ship Warilda. Whilst serving in the 12th Battalion KRRC. Aged 24 yrs.

F McGill served in France from the 11/11/1914. On the 13th March 1915 he received a Bayonet Wound to the head. By then he was aged 19 yrs having served for 3 years. He was transferred to the No 5 Ambulance Train, on the 14th March 1915. He was later to see service with the Military Police as an A/Cpl.

A native of Farnworth in Lancashire, the son of Thomas and Charlotte Clare, of 28 Worsley Rd, Farnworth, Bolton. Details photocopied from Fallen in the Fight by Neil and Sue Richardson. (Farnworth and Kearsley Men who died in the Gt War 1914-18. George Thomas Clare Born Farnworth son of Thomas (rate collector to Farnworth District Council) and Charlotte. Attended Farnworth Grammar School and was a Teacher in the primary department of Queen Street Methodist School. Apprentice to G Graveson & Sons iron-mongers of Market Street. Enlisted farnworth (34662 1/4th Kings Own R Lancasters). He was on his way home on leave and had reached the boat, when he was ordered to return to the Front and was killed almost immediately 9/4/1918, aged 26 at Givenchy. Memorial in Farnworth Cemetery, the brother of S B Clare RAMC serving in Italy.

Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. With details from the Marquis du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour. Samuel Morley Frank Neat Pte number 29616 1st battalion the R Welsh Fusiliers. Son of James Frank Neat of Brynmaur, Co Brecon, Clothier, by his wife Elizabeth Margaret. Born Brynmaur aforesaid 24th September 1896 and educated at County School there. (Entrance Scholar) and Bangor Normal College (Entrance Scholar) and subsequently became a School Teacher. Enlisted 14th January 1916 and served with the Expeditionary Force in France & Flanders from the 24th June 1916, and was Killed in Action at Ginchy 3rd September following. Buried at Ginchy (unmarried).

Frederick Boyden served in France from the 5th May 1917 until the 5th February 1918. He was gassed in January (13th) 1918. George Perry also served in the Labour Corps.

Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey, also the Islands of the Aegean Sea from the 25th April 1916 until the 6th July 1917. Egypt from the 3rd of January 1916 till the 18th March 1916. Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 19th March till the 20th April 1916 again from the 12th July 1917 until April 1918. He successfully applied for his Star and Clasp, whilst serving in the Army Educational Corps RMC in 1924 . Address for his Medals given as 5 The Terrace, Royal Military College, Camberley, Surrey.

Serving as Pte number 14913 he served in the Ox & Bucks LI in France from the 21/9/1915. Whilst in the RFC/RAF he served in 85 Squadron. Mick Mannock VC commanded the Squadron.

A native of Bridport Dorset, William was born in April 1889 and by profession a Cordite Worker in Poole Dorset in 1939.

British War & Victory Medals named to Capt G A Dick-Cunyngham , the latter with MID emblem. George Alistair Dick-Cunyngham was born on the 11th May 1881, educated at Eton College. He served in the South African War and retired in January 1911, being recalled in 1914. Stationed in the UK and Malta thence Ireland from 1902-1910. Temp Major 6th Reserve Battalion Rifle Brigade, at sometime attached 2nd Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Medal address given as 50 pall mall, London, SW1. He died in London 21/12/1940. The nephew of Willaim Henry Dick-Cunyngham VC.

ST J JERUSALEM-BWM-1935 JUBILEE MEDALS TO LT COL W SPONG. The three mounted for wear with a silver St John Jerusalem award, at the front. A British War Medal named to Major W A Spong, with an unnamed George V 1935 Silver Jubilee Medal. Together with his second wife's medals British War and Victory Medals, named to S.M.P. A Daly T.F.N.S. Both groups have matching miniatures groups, each mounted for wear. Also a WW11 Condolence Slip named to Lieutenant-Colonel W A Spong. Lt Colonel William Arthur Spong MB BCL BAQ LM RoT died on the 22nd December 1940 whilst Co of the base Hospital Tidworth, being buried at Tidworth Military Cemetery. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps before the Great War, during which as a Major he was serving in Mhow India. When his Medal details were returned in 1921, he had listed a M in D as 'missing'. Officers of the Medical Services states he was awarded a Victory medal, which the MIC proves incorrect (BWM only). He is probably entitled to a 1939/45 War Medal, possibly a Defence Medal also. Born in Liverpool on the 11th April 1883, he was educated in Ireland (TC Dublin) Lieutenant 29/07/1907, Captain 29/1/1911. T/Mjr 25/2/18 till February 23rd 1919. Major 29/7/1919. Temp Lt/Col 6/10/1931, Lt Colonel 19/10/1931. Retired on pay 11/4/1938, rejoined 2/9/1939. He had served in India from 1909 until 1919. Again in India 1921-25 also 1930-35. He retired as the Commanding Officer British Military Hospital Murree, on the 3/9/35 (held the post from 1931) then on the Reserve of Officers until 11/4/1938 His first wife Violet Frances Horendon (who died in India) had two children Vivian and Jill Spong. He at one time was living in Bell House, Sutton Benger, Wilts. After he lost his 1st wife it was in September 1919 ( Taunton Somerset) he married his 2nd Wife Annette Daly, (Special Military Probationer) of the Territorial Force Nursing Service. S M P Annette Daly served in Salonika from 23/11/1917. Her next of kin details list a C Eason Esq, Harrieston, Dalkey, Co Dublin. Also a related unnamed group of four medals, 1939/45 & Burma Stars, Defence & War Medals with a matching group of miniatures. By provenance the medals awarded to Major A V H Spong R Tanks.
A VICTORIAN LSGC to the R SCOTS FUSILIER GUARDS. A Long Service Good Conduct Medal awarded to 5678 Pte H Hay Scots Fus Gds. 2nd type with swivel suspender and losing the badge of Hannover centre. 1831-1871, when it lost the Fusiliers in the Regimental Title. Mounted for wear with a 1911 Coronation/Durbar ribbon.
A 4th DORSET'S TERRITORIAL EFFICIENCY MEDAL etc. A George V Efficient Service Medal with bar Territorial, named to 5721292 Sjt W J Hoff 4-Dorset R. The 4th Battalion (Territorial served in India and Mespot etc in the GT War) A mounted group of four WW11 medals, 1939/5 & Burma Stars, Defence & War Medals. A mounted Royal Navy miniature group of six, 1939/45-Atlantic-Pacific Stars, Defence & War also GV1 LSGC medal.
A ROYAL ENGINEERS OFFICERS SWORD & SCABBARD. A Victorian officers Royal Engineers sword and steel scabbard, numbered 32601 by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London. VR cypher in the plated steel hilt, with initials R G E on the 32" blade. Also the Royal Engineers device and Arms, with a slight loss at the point of the blade. C1894. Two possibilities are in the Army List around that period, a Balloon Section and an Indian Engineers Major.
