Poster, BR 'Oxford - Travel By Train', Q/R size with artwork by A Carr Linford. An almost timeless view with the exception of the period cars, lorries and fashion of the pedestrians, of the city of spires looking down Broad Street. Great North Of Scotland Railway ornate Coffee Pot manufactured by R & B in Scotland. A most unusual and striking design having the bottom half of the main body with 2¾" purling and the top half smooth. Within the top half is the fully titled company title within a semicircle, almost garter style. The handle is particularly interesting with both top and bottom having heat dissipating holes where attached to the main body. The lid has a simple, round knob to lift. Very good condition overall with only minor knocks from use.
Buckinghamshire Railway 12 inch, drop dial, fusee Trunk Clock supplied to the Railway in 1850 by the world renowned Thwaites and Reed of London. The movement number 'T&R 11085' can be traced from the Thwaites and Reed records and these confirm the origin. The case is made from mahogany with a wonderful, flame mahogany veneer to the front. The substantial brass, chain driven fusee movement in fully restored and in fine working condition. Has the traditional, ringed pillars associated with T&R and is also stamped on the front plate 'T&R 11085'. The dial has been repainted by the Western Region. Additionally, whilst acquiring typical GWR / BR-W broad spade hands, it was also fitted with a BR-W ivorine plate 'BR-WR 4833'. The clock was confirmed by the vendor as having come from Bicester London Road station and this certainly fits in with the Thwaites records as they supplied a clock in 1850 to this location. Possibly one of the earliest Railway Clocks to appear at auction and certainly the first confirmed Buckinghamshire Railway example.
Nameplate MEREVALE HALL, ex GWR 'Hall' Class locomotive number 5971. Built at Swindon Works in April 1937 and allocated to Weymouth. In August 1950 it was allocated to Westbury and in March 1959 and May 1965 to Worcester. Final shed was Oxford from where withdrawal took place in December 1965. Scrapped at Cashmore's, Newport. Stamped with the number in rear and also 'R' meaning the right hand plate. Condition is as it came off the locomotive. Note: Merevale Hall is situated on a hill overlooking the Warwickshire town of Atherstone. Built in in the 1840s by the architect Edward Blore, the Hall's treasures include the diaries and books of Sir William Dugdale, Garter King of Arms.
GWR 12", mahogany cased, drop dial Trunk fusee Clock. Bears the ivorine plate 'G.W.R . 2079' on the left side. Original condition including the face which bears ghost GWR lettering and the scarcer Kays in larger than normal lettering. More importantly, beneath the centre and beneath 'Worcester', is the ghost number 'R 1007.' This evidently indicates the fact that it was a Relief Clock, used to fill temporary locations when resident clocks went for repair. Complete with key and pendulum, the clock is in working order. As this came to us with BR(W) 3 aspect Guards Handlamp complete with all aspect glasses and a BR-WR burner and reservoir, we have included this with the lot.
