L.S., Arthur James Balfour, one page, 8vo, Carlton Gardens, London, 3rd March 1890, to William F. Bailey, on the blind embossed stationery of the Irish Office, marked Private. Balfour thanks his correspondent for their pamphlet 'on the very important and difficult subject of Woods, Forests, etc. in Ireland' and remarks that he will read it with care. SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. A.L.S., G. Bernard Shaw, on one side of his correspondence card, Ayot St. Lawrence, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, 9th June 1931, to Havelock Ellis. Shaw writes, in full, 'In 1917 I reviewed a book on Herbert Spencer by Hugh Elliot. On looking through it for inclusion in my collected works I find that it contains not a single mention of Elliot's name, all my remarks being addressed to Havelock Ellis. Can you explain this? Did you contribute a preface? Is there any reason why my head should have been so full of you at that moment that the initials H.E. set me babbling your name, and that Elliot did not protest nor the publishers send a correction? Scrawl me a card about it to 4 Whitehall Court S.W.1.' Hand addressed by Shaw to the verso. A letter of interesting content and good association. About EX Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) English Physician, Writer, Intellectual & Social Reformer who studied human sexuality. Hugh S. R. Elliot (1881-1930) English Science Writer whose publications included Herbert Spencer, a biography of the Victorian English philosopher, biologist and political theorist which was published by Constable & Company Ltd. in 1917 as part of their Makers of the Nineteenth Century series edited by Basil Williams.
WALPOLE ROBERT: (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42. D.S., R Walpole, one page, folio, n.p. (London), May 1725. The manuscript document is a treasury warrant relating to John Spicer, a messenger in the Court of Exchequer, granting an allowance to him for his travel and charges in January and February 1724 for the delivery of 'severall blank parchment Books issued out of the King's Remembrances office…..directed to the Custoners, Comptrollers & Searchers of the Ports underwritten for Entring all Goods and Merchandizes as well coming into as going out of the said Ports for one whole year……And also for Entring all Goods and Merchandizes carried betwixt Port & Port…..', the ports listed including those at Sandwich, Yarmouth, Ipswich and Boston. A note at the foot states 'This service has been carefully perform'd as appears by the Rects. of the respective officers' and several additional notes request that the Bill be paid. Signed by Walpole at the foot and with several countersignatures. With blank integral leaf. GEORGE II: (1683-1760) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1727-60 & PELHAM HENRY (1694-1754) British Prime Minister 1743-54 & GRENVILLE GEORGE (1712-1770) British Prime Minister 1763-5. A fine D.S. George R, as King, at the head, and H: Pelham and George Grenville, as Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, at the conclusion, two pages, large folio, Court at Kensington, 19th August 1751. The elegantly penned manuscript document is a warrant addressed to William Pitt, Paymaster of the Forces, and states, in part, 'Whereas, it has been usual to allow a Number of fictious Names upon the Muster Rolls of each of Our Troops of Horse Guards and two Troops of Horse Grenadier Guards, instead of effective men, in order to increase the Allowance of Pay to the several officers of the said Troops, the better to enable them to maintain their Ranks in the Army, and for other purposes…..and also to pass & allow, One Man per Company upon the Muster Rolls of Our Regiment and Twenty five Independt. Companys of Invalids over & above the Allowance born upon this Establishment for the Service of the Agent & Sollicitor to Our said Regiment…..in consideration of his great Pains & Trouble in the Performance of his Duty…..pursuant to two several warrants from us, and from Our late Royal Father….Our Will & Pleasure now is, that the said fictious Names shall be no longer allowed upon the Muster of Rolls…..but instead thereof, We do hereby Authorize and Direct, that in the Debentures to be made out by you from time to time for the Pay of Our Two Troops of Horse Guards…..You take care to allow the Full Pay of six private Gentlemen…..& also the Full Pay of one Man for each Company…..over & above the Allowance to the Agent & Sollicitor….Yet the Amount of the Full Pay of the said Private Gentlemen, & Private Men as well…..is to be Computed and included in the Debenture, or Debentures…..and as often as the same shall be paid & cleared; It being Our Intention that the Officers……and the Agent & Sollicitor….now and for the time being shall all and every of them continue to have & receive the aforesaid Allowance…..' Also countersigned at the conclusion by John Campbell (1695-1777) British Politician, Lord Commissioner of the Treasury 1746-54. A few very minor ink marks slightly affect the King's signature. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges and one small hole to the centre of the document, VG William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. 1st Earl of Chatham. British Prime Minister 1766-68 and, at the time of the present document, Paymaster of the Forces (1746-55).
NEHRU JAWAHARLAL: (1889-1964) First Prime Minister of independent India, 1947-64. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Nehru in a profile head and shoulders pose wearing a Gandhi cap upon his head. Signed by Nehru in fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated 23rd January 1949 in his hand. Two slight paperclip indentation marks to the right edge of the image and some very slight traces of former mounting to the verso. Together with Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) Prime Minister of India 1966-77, 1980-84. The world's second female head of government and daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. Assassinated. Blue fountain pen ink signature ('Indira Gandhi') and date, 1966, in her hand on a piece. Accompanied by a T.L.S. by R. K. Goel, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, one page, 8vo, New Delhi, 3rd March 1966, to Percy Warren, forwarding the signature as requested. Two neat black ink lines to the lower half of the letter, not affecting the text or signature. About VG, 2

A rare, large D.S., Edward R I, as King, at the head, one page, large oblong folio, Court at Saint James's, 30th March 1936. The attractive red and black partially printed document confirms the appointment of James Heffernan as an officer in the Royal Air Force from 30th September 1935 with the rank of Flying Officer and states, in part, that Heffernan is to 'at all times….exercise and well discipline in their Duties both the inferior Officers and Airmen serving under you and use your best endeavours to keep them in good Order and Discipline….'. Countersigned at the foot by Frederick Bowhill and Christopher Bullock alongside a blind embossed circular seal. Documents signed by King Edward VIII during his short reign are rare and desirable. Some light overall age wear and some light dust staining to the left edge, only very slightly affecting the King's signature. PITT WILLIAM: (1759-1806) The Younger. British Prime Minister 1783-1801, 1804-06. A.L.S., W Pitt, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Monday night ½ past 11'), to 'My dear Lord'. Pitt states 'It does not seem to me to be very material that any of us should go down to Windsor tomorrow, and I meant to propose a meeting of Cabinet to talk over what we are to do on Thursday' and also adds 'I have seen the Chanc[ello]r this evening who wishes the meeting to be about One.' GEORGE VI: (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52. A large D.S., George R. I., as King, at the head, one page, large oblong folio, Court at Saint James's, 25th May 1938. The attractive red and black partially printed document confirms the appointment of Leonard Spencer as an officer in the Royal Air Force from 4th October 1937 with the rank of Flying Officer and states, in part, that Spencer is to 'at all times….exercise and well discipline in their Duties both the inferior Officers and Airmen serving under you and use your best endeavours to keep them in good Order and Discipline….'. Countersigned at the foot by William Mitchell and Donald Banks alongside a blind embossed circular seal. Some light age wear and very light, minor foxing to the left edge of the document, only very slightly affecting the King's signature. Accompanied by the original strong cardboard tube in which the document was originally sent to Spencer at RAF Station Lee-on-the-Solent in Hampshire by Registered mail. VG William Mitchell (1888-1944) Australian-born British Air Chief Marshal of World War II, Air Member for Personnel 1937-38. Mitchell was the first Royal Air Force officer to hold the post of Black Rod. Donald Banks (1891-1975) British Major General and Civil Servant, the first Director General of the Post Office 1934-36 where he was responsible for introducing the official emergency telephone number of '999' and the speaking clock ('TIM'). Banks served as Permanent Under Secretary of State for Air in 1938.
EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. D.S., Edward R & I, as King, at the head, one page, large oblong folio, Court of Saint James, 1st March 1905. The partially printed document is a diplomatic commission appointing John Bowring Spence to be Consul for the provinces of Dalmatia, Carniola and the Austrian Littoral and to reside at Trieste and grants him the power and authority to 'aid and protect Our Merchants and others Our Subjects, who may trade with, or visit, or reside. in the said Provinces and also to appoint Vice Consuls....'. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice (1845-1927) 5th Marquess of Lansdowne, British Statesman, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1900-05. With a blind embossed seal. A manuscript docket appears to the verso, in German, dated at Vienna, 10th April 1905, signed by Count Agenor Maria Goluchowski (1849-1921) Polish Statesman, Minister of the Imperial and Royal House and of Foreign Affairs of Austria-Hungary 1895-1906. HORROCKS BRIAN: (1895-1985) British Lieutenant General of World War II, remembered for his role during Operation Market Garden (1944). A rare hardback bound small 4to album presented to Lieutenant General Sir Brian Horrocks by The Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry who served under him during World War II, featuring an attractive black and red ink calligraphic title page, dated Germany, 1946, a beautifully penned calligraphic Foreword by Lieutenant-Colonel Stanley D. Christopherson, the text commencing ‘Would you please accept this book as a token of appreciation, admiration and respect, from the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, who claim to have fought more actions under your command, from ‘D’ Day to ‘V’ Day, than any other Armoured Regiment…..’ and continuing ‘This book….contains the signatures of all ranks who were with the Regiment on ‘V’ Day, many of whom have served continuously under your command from Bir Ridge to Tunis, and from ‘D’ Day to the end of the European Campaign….’ , the following pages containing over 600 signatures by various officers of the Sherwood Rangers including Stanley Christopherson (Commander of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry), Roger Sutton Nelthorpe, F. R. Derick Warwick, Stephen Mitchell (Second-in-Command after landing on the Normandy beaches on D-Day), Stuart Hills and many, many others, the album also featuring a few original photographs (some detached) to the closing pages and with endpapers featuring original colour pen and ink illustrated maps showing the course of the Regiment over the desert and from the beaches of Normandy to the outskirts of Bremerhaven, indicating all of the major battles fought on the way, signed and annotated ‘From the best Tank Regt I ever had under command, Brian G. Horrocks Lt Gen’ by Horrocks to the front free endpaper. Bound in dark green leather with gilt stamped title and five raised bands to the spine (slightly faded). Together with an unsigned hardback edition of Sherwood Rangers – The Story of the Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry in the Second World War by T. M.
