HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. A.L.S., with his initials T. H., on one side of a correspondence card, Max Gate, Dorchester, 18th October 1927, to William Maxwell of Messrs. R & R Clark in Edinburgh. Hardy states that Maxwell`s letter arrived just after he had posted one to him and he continues to send thanks for a correction (apparently relating to the anonymous traditional song Annie Laurie). Hand addressed by Hardy. VG William Maxwell (1873-1957) Managing Director of R & R Clark, who printed the vast majority of Hardy`s books from 1902 onwards.

TOLKIEN J. R. R.: (1892-1973) English Writer, author of the classic fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. A.L.S., Ronald Tolkien, two pages, 8vo, Headington, Oxford, 28th December 1961, to `My dear Mroczkowski` (Professor Przemysalw Mroczkowski). Tolkien states that he is touched to be remembered, explaining that he received his correspondent`s card and is now taking some time to write to his friends. The author continues to thank Mroczkowski for having let him know about a Polish translation and remarks `Alas! the Slavonic languages were (to my regret now) one of the important things that I neglected in days when the mind was quicker and more retentive, and I fear that there is now no hope that I shall ever be able to judge whether a translation of my works is good or bad-except in the crudest points, such as the omission of whole sentences (of which the Dutchman was at time guilty).` He further thanks Mroczkowski`s wife for her efforts with the Essay on Fairy Stories which Tolkien explains is out of print and difficult to obtain, adding `The Oxford Univ. Press did not behave well about that volume. It was intended to be sold for the benefit of Charles Williams` widow, but the Press let it go out of print quickly and refused to reprint when a demand developed.` A letter of interesting content. CROMPTON RICHMAL: (1890-1969) British Writer, famous for her Just William stories. A.L.S., R. C. Lamburn (Richmal Crompton), two pages, 8vo, Oakley Road, Bromley Common, Kent, 17th February 1935, to an unidentified gentleman. Crompton states that she is `in sympathy with your aims, but can think of nothing to say on the subject that has not been said-said better-already. The objections to cruelty are, after all, self evident.` In concluding she wishes her correspondent`s anthology every success. Two blue crayon annotations appear at the head of the first page. VG

A good D.S., James R, as King James VI of Scotland, at the foot, one page, folio, Falkland Palace, 16th August 1602. The manuscript document is a form of passport issued to Sir Cosmo Waiss (?) of Barnbarro and `a friend in company`, allowing them to pass through England, France, Flanders, Almanyia and Italy, and conduct their business or pleasure activities for a period of seven years, adding that neither they, or the skippers and mariners that transport them, be accused of criminal pursuits. With a good red wax seal featuring a rampant lion at the foot, encircled by string. Matted in white and framed and glazed in an old black frame to an overall size of 12.5 x 14.5. Some light overall age wear and with some heavy folds, nevertheless boldly penned and with a good signature of the monarch. About VG

The manuscript document is addressed to Richard, Earl of Ranelagh, Paymaster General of the Guards, Garrisons and Landforces, and is a warrant to `pay to Our Right Trusty and Right Intirely Beloved Cousin Henry Duke of Grafton….the Summ of Seaven Thousand Four hundred pounds Seaventeen Shillings the same being certified by you….to Our First Regiment of Foot Guards under his Command` for the period of 61 days from 1st March to 30th April. Countersigned at the foot by William Blathwayt (1649?-1717) English Civil Servant and Politician who established the War Office, Secretary at War 1683-92. A receipt for the full amount, bearing the signature of an R. Topham, appears to the second page. With blank integral leaf. Some very minor overall age wear and extensive, neat splitting to the vertical fold at the left edge. Nevertheless the document has a clean appearance and features a fine example of the monarch`s signature. About VG

The attractively penned manuscript document is addressed to Thomas, Lord Viscount Dupplin and Thomas Potter, Paymaster General of Our Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces and authorises the payment of £20,000 to John Thomlinson and John Hanbury, merchants who `have represented unto us that a further sum of Twenty thousand pounds is necessary to enable them to pay several Bills drawn before the expiration of their contracts by their agents in North America to answer the demands of the Deputy Paymasters there….` Countersigned at the foot by the Duke of Devonshire (1720-1764, British Prime Minister 1756-57), Henry Bilson-Legge (1708-1764, English Statesman, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1754-55, 1756-57 & 1757-61) and Viscount Duncannon. Also signed to the verso by both Thomlinson and Hanbury to the verso. An interesting document featuring the extremely rare signature of the Duke of Devonshire. GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A good A.L.S., George R, one page, 4to, Weymouth, 2nd October 1800, to `My dear Frederick` (his son, Frederick, Duke of York). The King informs his son that the full recovery of Sophia (1777-1848, Daughter of King George III) will enable him to leave Weymouth on Wednesday and continues, `Mr. Secy. Dundas has sent me a strange proposal of employing Sir Ralph Abercrombie (sic) in Egypt to which I have answered that the 5000 disposable men left at Minorca may be sent if thought advisable for that Service and from the East Indies a reinforcement ordered for that service but that the proposed force for Portugal can in the present situation of affairs be ordered for any new service.` The King further states `I approve of M. Gl. Wemys`s Regt. being called the grd. and of the formation of the Regt. of Riflemen and that the cloathing shall be green with black.` and also adds `The Judge Advocate seems perfectly right in his opinion that the Quarter Master of the 21st Light Dragoons be dismissed the Service as his declaration of having been inlisted to be appointed Sergeant Major is not controverted.` The King concludes `I ever remain, my dear Frederick, your most affectionate Father`. With blank integral leaf bearing a holograph docket by the Duke of York. A letter of excellent association and with good military content. Henry Dundas (1742-1811) Scottish Politician, Secretary of State for War 1794-1801. Ralph Abercromby (1734-1801) British Lieutenant-General, noted for his service during the Napoleonic Wars. Abercromby successfully drove the French out of Egypt; indeed The battle at Abukir, involving the debarkation of troops in the face of strenuous opposition, is ranked among the most daring and brilliant exploits of the British Army. Abercromby died from wounds received in the battle.

Baden-Powell announces `I am writing, for the first time in its life, with the beautiful pen you were so kind as to send me on my birthday.` and continues `It works very well indeed and will be of great use to me.` He further thanks her for her kindness in sending such a useful present although adds that he never received the knife that she sent along with her brother and sister, Ian and Dodo, commenting `But I am just as grateful as if I had received it, for the very kind thought which urged you all to send it.` Accompanied by the original envelope (large, neat tears at the folds) hand addressed by Baden-Powell and signed (`R Baden Powell` with rank) by him in the lower left corner.
