A rare example signed by both Queen Victoria & Prince Albert VICTORIA & ALBERT: VICTORIA (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901 & ALBERT (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. A fine A.L.S. by both Queen Victoria (signed with her initials V R) and Prince Albert ('Albert'), seven pages, 8vo, Windsor Castle, 23rd January 1844, to Count Alphonse Mensdorff Pouilly ('My dear Alphonse'), on attractive stationery featuring a colour printed Royal Coat of Arms to the upper left corner, in German. Queen Victoria commences the letter by thanking her cousin for his letter, and continues to wish him happiness on his birthday, commenting 'may you remain as happy as you are now with your dear wife. Who can understand your happiness better than both of us who live together so infinitely happy'. The Queen further states 'I received a long letter from Alexander a few days ago. He seems to be so alone in his garrison. He very much regrets, as we do, that dear Arthur could not follow your example. I heard that he had seen the young lady again' and also informs the Count 'I have had all your portraits lithographed and they turned out very nicely. I will soon send 2 dozen of each of them for you all' and concludes 'Now could I ask you to order me 3 dozen pairs of gloves, but only dark colours'. Prince Albert concludes the letter by writing, also in German, 'I also have to add a few lines in order to express my good wishes for your birthday. You know that they are always truly heartfelt. I also thank you for your last kind letter and remain as always your dear nephew'. With blank integral leaf. [PARR CATHERINE]: (1512-1548) Queen of England and of Ireland 1543-47, the last of the six wives of King Henry VIII. A selection of strands of light brown, fair coloured hair, the lock apparently cut from the head of Catherine Parr, loosely contained in a 19th century folded 8vo sheet of notepaper bearing a contemporary annotation in dark ink, in full, 'Katherine Parrs Hair, last wife of Henry VIIIth - cut off in Worcestershire upon the body being exhumed by R. Powell Cotton'. Rare. VG Catherine Parr died, aged around 35 or 36, on 5 September 1548, at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, from childbed fever, having given birth to her only child, the daughter of her fourth husband, Thomas Seymour, six days earlier. In May 1782, John Locust discovered the coffin of Queen Catherine in the ruins of the Sudeley Castle chapel. He opened the coffin and observed that the body, after 234 years, was in a surprisingly good condition. Reportedly the flesh on one of her arms was still white and moist. After taking a few locks of her hair, he closed the coffin and returned it to the grave. The coffin was opened a few more times in the next ten years, including a disinterment by Colonel Richard Powell Cotton in 1783, when the present hair was apparently removed. Parr's coffin was finally officially reopened in 1817, when nothing but a skeleton remained. Her remains were then moved to the tomb of Lord Chandos whose family owned the castle at that time.

The Queen Mother thanks her correspondent for their letter 'about the opening of the garden at St Mary's' and comments 'I would love to be associated with such a triumphant happening', further discussing a possible date of 26th May for the event, and adding 'It all seems so wonderful that the derelict garden & church to which we dragged a reluctant Archbishop from Lambeth Palace some years ago, is now ready to be “opened”!'. The Queen Mother concludes her letter by remarking 'You have worked wonders and what seemed almost an impossibility is now a splendid reality. I am so thrilled and thankful'. '…even if he will not withdraw some of his wrong conclusions & inferences…' GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. A good A.L.S., with his initials G. R. I., four pages, 8vo, Windsor Castle, 28th March 1913, to Arthur Davidson ('My dear David'). The King states that he is sorry to hear that his correspondent has not been feeling well, commenting 'I fear that all the hard work & worries which you have been through during the last weeks, when you gave me such splendid help about F. have told upon you' and continues 'Now I hear from [Arthur] Bigge that another subject has given you a great deal of work & anxiety, I mean Sidney Lee's life of my Father'. The King further explains 'The whole thing I fear was mismanaged from the beginning & I only wish it had been in your hands then, instead of after the publication when the mischief was done. Bigge has explained to me what you are trying to do. My dear David I do appreciate most warmly your untiring efforts to remove the false impression of my dear Father's influence & character produced by this article. I quite approve of what you are doing & recognise that it would be inadvisable to write an article as an answer to Sidney Lee. But if you can succeed in inducing him to write an introduction to the article when he publishes it in a separate form & to modify even if he will not withdraw some of his wrong conclusions & inferences, you will have done invaluable service to my dear Father's memory.' and also sympathises with Davidson for the 'great difficulty in dealing with a man who puts his own reputation & amour propre before any other consideration of fairness or justice in dealing with the history & life of one that is gone'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the King and signed ('G') by him with his initial to the lower left corner. With a black wax seal to the verso. A letter of interesting content.
