DICKENS, CHARLES. A.L.S. to Arthur Ryland (1807-77), solicitor, later Mayor of Birmingham. 2pp., 8vo., corner mounted, from Tavistock House, Tavistock Square, London, Monday Twentieth September 1858. He thanks Ryland for his note, but does not think that he need trouble him before he goes to Birmingham. mentioning his son Charley who ". . . wishes me to report that he passed his short holiday from Barings, in rowing and playing cricket-matches". Published in the Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens. With a copy of a letter from the publishers (1975); an article about it by Professor R. D. McMaster of the University of Alberta, and a transcript.

Franl. 1930". Photographic illustrations. (one loose). A few newspaper cuttings pasted in. According to a note loosley inserted, the book "Cost 300 hundred pounds above estimate. The publishers went bankrupt. 400 copies then left on hand. Selfridges paid 8d per copy and sold at 1/- within 14 days."
