GRANT DUNCAN: (1885-1978) British Painter, a member of the Bloomsbury Group. A.L.S., Duncan Grant, on one side of a plain postcard, Lewes, Sussex, 14th July 1971, to Neville Braybrooke. Grant thanks his correspondent for their letter and adds that he has no letters from Joe Ackerley, remarking 'If I had they would only be notes with dates for meeting for a meal' and concluding 'I think you have done wonders to collect 1000'. Hand addressed by Grant to the verso. Together with a second A.L.S., Duncan Grant, one page, 8vo, Cascais, Portugal, 26th February 1972, also to [Neville] Braybrooke. Grant states that his correspondent's letter, which he has just received, 'revived many memories with (?) Clive's which I am glad to have' and further adds 'The two panels which survive are at present in the cellars of Agnew Bros'. Grant concludes by stating that he is looking forward to seeing the letters of Joe Ackerley which Braybrooke is editing. With blank integral leaf. One corner crease to the upper left corner of the postcard and a small area of paper loss to the upper edge of the letter, neither of which affect the text or signatures, VG, 2 Neville Braybrooke (1923-2001) English Poet, Writer, Editor, Literary Critic and Publisher who edited The Letters of J. R. Ackerley (1975). Son of Patrick Braybrooke (1894-1956) English Literary Critic. J. R. Ackerley (1896-1967) British Writer and Editor of The Listener, the BBC's weekly magazine. Ackerley published many emerging poets and writers who would later become successful and influential in Great Britain. Ackerley was openly homosexual, a rarity at a time when homosexuality was socially ostracized and forbidden by law. Clive Bell (1881-1964) English Art Critic, associated with the Bloomsbury Group.

POLITICS: A commemorative cover issued on the occasion of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, hosted in Finland in 1975 and postmarked at Helsinki on 30th July 1975, individually signed by various political leaders comprising Urho Kekkonen (President of Finland 1956-82), Pierre Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada 1968-79, 1980-84), Harold Wilson (British Prime Minister 1964-70, 1974-76) and James Callaghan (British Prime Minister 1976-79) and also bearing an autopen signature of Gerald R. Ford (American President 1974-77). Accompanied by covering letters from the secretaries of Trudeau and Wilson. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and creasing, about VG For his hosting of the European Conference om Security and Co-operation in Helsinki, Urho Kekkonen was considered as a potential candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.

The manuscript document is addressed to Dudley Ryder and Thomas Steele, Joint Paymaster General of Our Guards, Garrisons and Land Forces, and is a warrant for a salary payment of two hundred and thirty seven pounds and one shilling to be made to Lieutenant Colonel John Sontag, military superintendent of Hospitals. Countersigned at the conclusion by William Windham (1750-1810) British Statesman, Secretary at War 1794-1801. With detached blank integral leaf. Some light age wear and a few very small tears to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, about VG

The manuscript document approves the appointment made by the King of the Belgians for Alfred Lloyd Fox 'to be His Vice Consul at Falmouth'. Countersigned at the conclusion by George Villiers (1800-1870) 4th Earl of Clarendon, English Diplomat & Statesman, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1853-58. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. An attractive and clean document, VG Alfred Fox (1794-1874) British Businessman, a member of the Quaker Fox family of Falmouth and owner and developer of Glendurgan Garden. As well as acting as Consul in Falmouth for Belgium, Fox also served as Vice Consul of the United States of America (1858-65), Russia, Italy, Greece, Brazil, Mexico and other countries.

CHARLES I: (1600-1649) King of England, Scotland & Ireland 1625-49. A fine D.S., Charles R, as King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Palace of Westminster, 17th May 1634. The manuscript document is addressed to Sir William Duedale, Knight Treasurer of the Chamber, and is a warrant for the payment of wages to Thomas Flooyd, a trumpeter appointed to replace the late John Smith, and states, in part, 'Whereas wee have appointed Thomas Flooyd to bee one of our Trumpetors in ordinary in the place of John Smith and have allowed him for his attendance in our service the wages of eight pence p[er] diem. These are therefore to will and command you out of our treasure remaynig in yo[u]r custody from time to time to paie….the said Thomas Flooyd….the said wages of eight pence p[er] diem from the time of the death of John Pendry late one of our Trumpetors during the naturall life of the said Thomas Flooyd att the foure usuall feastes or termes of the yeare. That is to saie, att the feast of the nativitie of St John Baptist St Michael Tharchangell the birth of our Lord God and Thannunciat[i]on of the blessed virgin Mary by even and equall port[i]ons……' With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear and with three original corrections to the text where certain words and passages were neatly erased and replaced. VG The present document is of interest in so much as that it provides the names of three of King Charles I's musicians.

The manuscript document is addressed to the Attorney General and is a warrant for John Richards to be one of the Clerks of the Privy Seal 'next & immediately after the determination of Our Grants now in being to Hartgill Baron, Sr. Charles Bickerstaffe Knt., John Mathews & Thomas Watkins, Clerks of Our Privy Seale in possession , or any one of them, & ye same to execute by himself or his Sufficient Deputy, for & during his naturall life together with all offices, wages, Diets, profits & Priviledges to the said Offices or either of them, belonging or any wise appertaining, in as full & ample manner, to all intents & purposes, as the now Clerks of Our Privy Seale hold & enjoy…..' . Countersigned at the foot by Henry Bennet (1618-1685) 1st Earl of Arlington, English Statesman, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1662-74. With blank integral leaf. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing John Webb to be a 'Cornett of that Troop whereof Colonell Alexander Canan is Captain, in Our Royall Consort the Queen's Regiment of Dragoons commanded by Our Right Trusty and Right Entirely Beloved Cousin Charles Duke of Somersett'. Countersigned at the foot by Robert Spencer (1641-1702) 2nd Earl of Sunderland, English Nobleman & Politician, Lord President of the Council 1685-88 and also signed in the left margin by William Blathwayt (1649-1717) English Diplomat and Politician who established the War Office as a department of the British Government. Lacking the seal and with some light overall age wear, about VG The present document was signed by the King in the first year of his short reign.

The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a remission document addressed to the Magistrates for the North Westminster Division of the Inner London Area and pardons Jean Moyo of the fine of £10 imposed upon her following her conviction at the Wells Street Magistrates' Court on 17th February 1977 for 'unlawfully causing a vehicle to wait in a restricted street during the prescribed hours', contrary to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1967. Countersigned at the conclusion by Merlyn Rees (1920-2006) British Politician, Home Secretary 1976-79. With blind embossed red paper seal affixed. Some light creasing, otherwise VG

BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS: Robert Peel (1788-1850) British Prime Minister 1834-35, 1841-46. Peel helped create the modern concept of the Police force while serving as Home Secretary. A.L.S., Robert Peel, four pages, 8vo, Whitehall, 7th February n.y., to James Emerson Tennent. Peel thanks his correspondent for a publication and remarks 'In a complicated subject of the nature of that to which it refers I should wish to have the benefit of hearing the discussion to which your Motion will give rise before I formed a decisive opinion upon the merits of it', further explaining 'My attendance last session on the Bank Committee, and two or three other Committees sitting at the same time prevented me from attending that on the Copy Right of Designs'; Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) British Prime Minister 1868, 1874-80. Autograph envelope signed, addressed in his hand to R. W. Williams at Angel Street, Cardiff, and bearing a Penny Red postage stamp and small red wax seal to the verso. Post marked at High Wycombe, 1862. Signed ('B Disraeli'; the signature very slightly smudges at the beginning) by Disraeli to the lower left corner. Generally VG, 2 James Emerson Tennent (1804-1869) British Politician and Traveller, author of a number of works including Wine: its Duties and Taxation (1855) and The Wild Elephant and The Method Of Capturing It in Ceylon (1867).

A fine A.L.S., Charles R, as King (in exile), one page, small 4to, Anvers, 31st July 1658, to Cardinal Azzolino ('Mon Cousin'), in French. The King states 'I know of your merit through your favourable reputation, and having been informed by my cousin the Cardinal of Retz about the particularity of your qualities' and further adds 'I could not come to terms with not telling you about such an important case at the Court of Rome as the one I entrusted you with'. With integral address leaf bearing a small red wax seal and with a small area of paper loss where originally broken. A letter of interesting association. Some extremely minor, light creasing, VG Decio Azzolino (1623-1689) Italian Catholic Cardinal, Code-Breaker, Investigator and Leader of the Squadrone Volante.  Jean Francois Paul de Gondi (1613-1679) Cardinal de Retz. French Churchman, Writer of Memoirs and agitator in the Fronde. The present letter is written just a little over a month before the death of Oliver Cromwell which signified the beginnings of the Restoration and King Charles II's eventual return to London and Parliament on 29th May 1660.

EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. Good L.S., Edward R & I, as King, three pages, folio, Buckingham Palace, 30th June 1905, to the President of the Republic of Bolivia. The manuscript letter announces that the marriage of the King's niece, 'Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret Victoria Augusta Charlotte Norah, elder daughter of Our dearly beloved Brother His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and of Strathearn, with His Royal Highness the Prince Oscar Frederick William Olaf Gustavus Adolphus, Duke of Scania, eldest son of His Royal Highness Oscar Gustavus Adolphus Crown Prince of Sweden and of Norway....was solemnized in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on the 15th instant'. Signed by King Edward at the conclusion and countersigned by 5th Marquess of Lansdowne (1845-1927)  British Politician and Foreign Secretary 1900-05. A series of very small holes appear along the left edge, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG

JAMES BOND: Albert R. Broccoli (1909-1996) American Film Producer associated with the James Bond films. A.L.S., Cubby Broccoli, to both sides of the inside of his personal printed card (effectively 8vo when opened), n.p. (London), n.d. (June 1983), to C. J. Constantinou. Broccoli announces 'Of course I remember you - you were indeed a big help' and continues to inform his correspondent 'We have finished our picture and [are] on our way back to the States, so we will not be in production for a long time', further adding 'I know your boy is a nice boy, but there is no opening as we are shut down'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Broccoli; Roger Moore (1927-2017) English Actor, famous for his portrayal of James Bond. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Moore standing in a half length pose and holding a gun in one hand. Signed in bold silver ink with his name alone to the image; Lana Wood (1946-     ) American Actress, sister of Natalie Wood. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph of Wood in a half length pose in costume as Plenty O'Toole alongside actor Sean Connery (James Bond) in a scene from Diamonds are Forever (1971). Signed by Wood in bold black ink to a clear area of the image, also adding her character name in her hand beneath her signature. VG to EX, 3 The James Bond film Octopussy was released on 6th June 1983, having been produced by EON Productions, the company formed by Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in 1961.

WILLIAM IV: (1765-1837) King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland 1830-37. A fine ink signature ('William R', as King) on a slim oblong 8vo piece, most likely neatly clipped from the head of a document. Neatly mounted to a card. Together with George IV (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. Ink signature ('George PR', as Prince Regent) on a slim oblong 8vo piece evidently clipped from the head of a document signed on behalf of King George III. A thin strip of mounting tape to the upper edge, not affecting the signature. About VG, 2

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. A.L.S., R S S Baden-Powell, one page, 8vo, Rustenburg, Transvaal, 21st July 1900, to Miss Bertha Prideaux ('Dear Miss. B.P.'). Baden-Powell writes, in full, 'I am delighted to find one who is pleased to honour me by having the same initials as myself. I feel very grateful to you for pointing out the fact and also for all your kind wishes'. Accompanied by the original envelope (front panel & reverse flap only) hand addressed by Baden-Powell and signed ('On Service: R Baden Powell, Major Genl.') by him to the lower left corner. Some light age wear, about VG The present letter is dated just a couple of months after the Siege of Mafeking ended on 17th May 1900. The role in which Baden-Powell played in the siege battle resulted in him being promoted to a Major General and becoming a national hero.

FERDINAND I: (1861-1948) Tsar of Bulgaria 1908-18. A.L.S., Ferdinand R, three pages, 8vo, Munich, 28th October 1923, to a Governor, in German. The exiled King announces 'The document issued by Your Excellency concerning my travels in the province of Tyrol loses its validity by the 1st November 1923' and adds that he tried many times to speak with his correspondent in Innsbruck, although without success, and continues 'I therefore feel compelled to inconvenience Your Excellency in writing on this matter. I would like to ask for an extension of the entry and exit permit to and from Tyrol for me and my people in automobiles for the duration of, if possible, another three years', asking for a reply to be sent to the Regina Palast Hotel in Munich. RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Painter. A fine, lighthearted A.L.S., Renoir, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (1892), to Paul Berard (‘Mon cher ami’), in French. Renoir announces ‘I just ran into the American in Graincourt, and suddenly I asked her if she wanted to come over for lunch tomorrow, and have some Wagremont hare. Aah! Aah! For real. This good Sir and this good Madam are well, how nice’ and further adds ‘We are going to have fun. Tomorrow will be a big celebration in Montmartre, and we’ll drink your health’. In a postscript, again signed by Renoir with his initial R, he informs Berard that he has arrived at his destination and that ‘rabbit and hare reunited’. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Renoir to Berard at the Chateau de Wagremont. A letter of good association. VG Paul-Antoine Berard (1833-1905) French Banker and Renoir’s most important patron. After meeting in 1878 the two men became good friends and Berard commissioned several paintings from Renoir, including his own portrait completed in 1880. The artist was a frequent guest at Berard’s lavish family estate at Wagremont, near Dieppe in Normandy, during the 1880s where he was given the freedom to paint without interruption.  Curiously Renoir writes ‘bonne Monsieur’ and ‘bon Madam’ in the present letter, confusing the masculine and feminine adjective agreements, perhaps as a private joke between himself and Berard to mock the way Anglophones (or the American referred to in the letter?) mix up the gender of nouns when speaking French.

The manuscript document is addressed to the Commissioners of the Treasury and is a warrant for the payment of Four Thousand Pounds to be made to John Braguiere, and instructing that the money is 'to be distributed by him amongst the distressed French Protestants as Our Charity and Benevolence to them for and towards their Reliefe and Subsistance'. Countersigned at the foot by Sidney Godolphin (1645-1712) 1st Earl of Godolphin. GEORGE I: (1660-1727) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1714-27. Fine A.L.S., George R, two pages, 4to, Herrenhausen, 6th August n.y., to his daughter [Sophia Dorothea of Hanover], in French. The King announces 'Your husband, the King, has done me the honour of giving me the letter that you took the trouble to write to me' and continues to state 'I took this opportunity to ask his permission for you to come and visit me here, which he granted me with very good grace. I hope he is happy with his brief stay here. For my part, I should be only too happy to tighten the bonds of our friendship still further, and I hope you will be kind enough to convey that assurance to him from me.' The King concludes 'Now I am looking forward to the time when I shall have the honour and satisfaction of embracing you, and of giving you proof, my dear daughter, of my deepest affection.' An attractive and boldly penned letter, VG Sophia Dorothea of Hanover (1687-1757) Queen Consort of Prussia, wife of Frederick William I. Sister of King George II of Great Britain and the mother of Frederick the Great. Sophia Dorothea married her cousin, Frederick William, in 1706 and he ascended the throne in 1713. The couple did not enjoy a harmonious marriage and Sophia Dorothea was also detested by her elder brother, King George II.

With integral address leaf addressed ‘To our trustie and wel beloved Sr. Duncan Campbell’ and with a good blind embossed paper seal affixed. Signed Christmas greetings card by both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth individually, the folding 8vo stiff cream card featuring an image to the inside of the Royal couple standing in full length poses together alongside their daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The four stand on the upper deck of HMS Vanguard as they arrive at Cape Town at the start of the Royal Tour of the Union of South Africa in 1947. Table Mountain can be clearly seen in the distance. MOORE SARA JANE: (1930-     ) American Criminal who attempted to assassinate American President Gerald Ford in 1975 for which she received a life sentence. A.L.S., Sara Jane Moore, one page, 4to, Lexington, Kentucky, 24th June 1980, to Ann Marie. Moore thanks her correspondent for writing and explains that her letter had been forwarded from another prison, 'I was sent here in April for an “evaluation”. This particular prison serves as the medical center for federal women prisoners and has a special maximum security section for those of us who cannot be held normally in a minimum security prison which this is. I'll be here another month or a little more…..', further adding 'I would enjoy writing to you on a regular basis. I'm curious how you learned about me and also curious to know why you have chosen nursing as your career and what the training is like. Thank you for your offer to send books, et cetera. Because my stay at this prison is temporary and because I'm not sure what my conditions of confinement will be when I return to Alderson I'll take a bye for now on that offer……' Together with a signed colour 3.5 x 4 polaroid photograph of Moore seated in a three quarter length pose. NATAL: An excellent selection of A.Ls.S., a few Ds.S. etc., by various Governors, Prime Ministers and other officials related to Natal comprising Henry McCallum (1852-1919, English Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1901-07; A.L.S. on the printed stationery of Government House, Natal, to a gentleman concerning his desire to secure local contracts for supplies and stating, in part, 'I went into [Percy] Girourad's figures after he left and found they were not altogether sound. I took the whole Natal military traffic, calculated what it would cost over the East London Johannesburg (centre of gravity) route and compared it with the Durban Johannesburg rates. With goods at 2s. per ton per mile the Natal bill is somewhat the smaller. Mr [David] Hunter has gone to Pretoria with an offer to make a fresh start on very liberal terms wh. I hope will be acceptable to the C-in-C. There is an excellent Imperial feeling here wh. The manuscript document is a License relating to John Tulloch and states, in part, ‘To all commanders of Our Ships of War and Privateers…..Greeting, whereas John Tulloch of London on behalf of sundry Commanders of Vessels navigating under Kniphausen, Papenburg, Hamburg, Luber, Bremen and Oldenburg Flags, Prays Our Royal Licence for permitting six vessels navigating under the said Flags (or the Flags of any neutral Power which may retain its Sovereignty and which they may assume in case their own meets with Impediments or Restrictions in Ports they may lie in or be declared extinct by any of the Belligerent Powers in consequence of the Territory the ships belong to, being annexed to any of those States) to be employed for the space of six months in trading between the Ports of Our United Kingdom and Ports from which British vessels are excluded (with liberty to touch at a Swedish or Norwegian Port out and home) with such Goods as are allowed by Our order….We….are graciously pleased to direct the Commanders of all Our Ships of War and Privateers not to interrupt the said Vessels Trading….’ Countersigned (‘Hawkesbury’) at the conclusion by Robert Jenkinson (1770-1828) 2nd Earl of Liverpool, British Prime Minister 1812-27, Home Secretary 1804-06, 1807-09. With two certificates at the conclusion, the first signed by John Tulloch in London on 7th April 1808 and stating, in part, ‘This is to certify that the Kniphausen Vessel Anna Rebecca…..now lying at Lynn & bound on a Voyage to the Baltick is one of the Vessels not named in this Licence intended to take the benefit thereof’ and the second signed by Joseph James on 21st May 1808, certifying that the vessel Anna Rebecca is under convoy of His Britannic Majesty’s sloop Kite.
