Ca. 100 – 200 AD. Wearable Ancient ring composed of D-shaped hoop; elaborately decorated shoulders and elliptical bezel holding a carnelian intaglio stone; the stone depicts an attacking lion. The lion was symbol of the IV legion - Legio quarta Flavia Felix ("Lucky Flavian Fourth Legion") which was a legion of the Imperial Roman army founded in AD 70 by the emperor Vespasian (r. 69-79) from the cadre of the disbanded Legio IV Macedonica. The legion was active in Moesia Superior in the first half of the 5th century. 22mm (inner diemater); 25 grams. Solid, wearable ring. Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1980s.
