Ca. 100 – 200 AD. Wearable Ancient ring composed of D-shaped hoop; elaborately decorated shoulders and elliptical bezel holding a carnelian intaglio stone; the stone depicts an attacking lion. The lion was symbol of the IV legion - Legio quarta Flavia Felix ("Lucky Flavian Fourth Legion") which was a legion of the Imperial Roman army founded in AD 70 by the emperor Vespasian (r. 69-79) from the cadre of the disbanded Legio IV Macedonica. The legion was active in Moesia Superior in the first half of the 5th century. 22mm (inner diemater); 25 grams. Solid, wearable ring. Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1980s. WW2 AFRICAN PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM & DIARY a fascinating album relating to Mr R A Field, who as a member of the Y.M.C.A visited West Africa during WW2. It includes a typed diary of his trip, various postcards (Kano, Sierra Leone, Freetown, Nigeria, Lagos etc), and various photographs of the Y.M.C.A group, various images of the natives and 5th Auxiliary Group (some annotated), and a typed letter from the 5th Auxiliary Group, Nigeria Regiment, thanking him for his efforts (dated Sep 43).

A rare Victorian Rugby Football Honours Cap and accompanying badges, relating to an Albert Beavis of Bristol. The cap, believed to be for the University Of St Andrew's RFC, features black velvet decorated with gold bullionware edging and piping. ' St A 1899-1900 ' to front. Accompanied by Beavis' Rugby Football badges - the first for the Gloucestershire Football Association ' Minor Cup 1930-31 Finalists ', and the second from the Bristol & District Football League, engraved ' New St Old Boys, R. U. Div III, 1930-31 '. Both hallmarked silver. Interesting and important collection.
