His rym-wercken were very popular, as is illustrated by the 10 editions that were issued up to the year 1719.

Im vorliegenden Gemälde zeigt Francesco Solimena eine herausragende, besonders eindringliche Interpretation. Entgegen der meisten frühen Darstellungen legt der Künstler ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die innere Kontemplation des Messias; so ist Christus auch nicht mit Dornenkrone, sondern bereits mit einem Heiligenschein dargestellt. Ein Verweis auf die vorangehenden Leidenswerkzeuge findet sich dennoch gekonnt in der rechten unteren Ecke: neben den Fesseln sind blutbefleckte Dornenäste zu erkennen. Ebenfalls am rechten Rand wird im leuchtend roten Vorhang auch auf den Verursacher des Leids verwiesen: SPQ(R) – sinnbildlich für die römische Herrschaft und deren Statthalter der Provinz Judäa, Pontius Pilatus. Typisch für Solimena sind die sinnlich-kunstfertigen, komplexen Ikonographie-Bezüge: Zwischen Vorhang und Leidenswerkzeugen ist ein Schild mit dem archaischen Gorgonenhaupt erkennbar, welches Christus direkt anblickt und damit einen weiteren Bezug zum Stein nimmt – denn schließlich sollte in der antiken Mythologie jeder, der die Medusa erblickt, selbst zu Stein werden. Von der eigenen tiefen Verbundenheit zu Gott zeugt neben seinen ergreifenden Kunstwerken auch der Umstand, dass sich Francesco Solimena selbst bereits in jungen Jahren in klerikalem Gewand kleidete. Der Überlieferung nach erhielt er deshalb auch den Beinamen "Abate Ciccio", auf den wohl auch die rückseitige Bezeichnung des vorliegenden Gemäldes verweist.

Er folgte einer Einladung des Fürsten Lichnovsky, welcher ihn beauftragte, Innenansichten seines Schlosses anzufertigen. Dieser Auftrag beschäftigte den Künstler über mehrere Jahre hinweg, und er arbeitete in der Folge bis 1847 immer wieder auf Schloss Grätz, wo eine umfangreiche Serie von Interieurs sowie Ansichten der Umgebung des Herrschaftssitzes entstanden.Unser Aquarell zeigt die reizvolle, von bewaldeten Hügeln dominierte Landschaft in der Nähe des Lichnovsky'schen Schlosses. Von einer Anhöhe aus, wo sich eine strohgedeckte Laube befindet, kann der Betrachter dem Blick des Künstlers folgen, und die Aussicht ins Tal genießen. Diesen Ausblick ins Zimbowitzer Tal hat Rudolf von Alt auf einigen Grätzer-Aquarellen festgehalten. Als Vergleich können zwei Blätter herangezogen werden, die im Auktionshaus im Kinsky verkauft wurden (136. Auktion, Nr. 1205, 7.6.2021 "Blick von der Dorotheenbaude auf die Hügel und Wälder bei Schloß Grätz", 80. Impressionistin des Südens, Wien/Rijeka 2017, S. 303, Nr. 113 und S. 307, Nr. 145Die in Triest geborene, als Landschafts- und Marinemalerin bekannt gewordene Künstlerin Leo (Leontine Camilla) von Littrow stammte aus einer altösterreichischen Adelsfamilie. Ihr Vater Heinrich von Littrow war Fregattenkapitän der österreichischen Marine, Kartograf, Dichter und Bühnenschriftsteller, ihre Mutter Caroline Fanny Barry entstammte einer wohlhabenden Bankiers- und Kaufmannsfamilie mit Firmensitzen in Genua und Triest. Leo, wie die Künstlerin von klein auf genannt wurde, wuchs in Triest und Fiume (Rijeka) in einer weltoffenen und künstlerisch interessierten Familie auf. Ihr Onkel und ihre Tante - Carl und Auguste von Littrow - führten in Wien einen Salon, in dem Persönlichkeiten aus Kunst und Kultur verkehrten und die junge Leo auch Hans Canon kennenlernte, der ihr erste Malstunden gab. Ab ungefähr 1875 war sie Schülerin des Pariser Künstlers Jean d’Alheim, in dieser Zeit lernte sie auch den französischen Impressionismus kennen, der ihre Arbeit nachhaltig beeinflusste.Bald stellten sich erste künstlerische Erfolge ein und Ausstellungen in Wien, Bremen, München und London verhalfen ihr zu Anerkennung und Bekanntheit, und sie machte sich einen Namen als "Impressionistin" des Südens. Ihre Motive fand sie, oft gemeinsam auf Reisen mit ihrer engen Künstlerfreundin Olga Wisinger-Florian, hauptsächlich in Istrien und Dalmatien.Littrows Atelier im beliebten Seebad Abbazia (Opatija), wo sie bis zu ihrem Tod lebte, war Treffpunkt von Sammlern und Freunden der Künstlerin, zu diesen gehörten u.a. Kronprinzessin Stephanie von Österreich oder Erzherzog Karl Stephan von Österreich. Besondere Wertschätzung erfuhr Littrow durch einen ehrenhaften Auftrag in Wien. Mitte der 1880er Jahre wurde sie als einzige weibliche Künstlerin eingeladen, an der malerischen Ausgestaltung der Hochparterresäle im neu erbauten Naturhistorischen Museum mitzuarbeiten, ihr Gemälde zeigt die "Küste von Ragusa".
