John Wilkes (1727-97), Member for Middlesex 1768 halfpenny-sized political token, bust of Wilkes, R. MAY TRUE BRITAINS ENJOY LIBERTY WITHOUT OPPRESSION, No. 45, very fine, SCARCE * Wilkes was jailed for treason in 1768 for publishing number 45 of THE NORTH BRITON accusing the King of lying about the truce with France, ending the Seven Years War with overly generous terms. His unarmed supporters rebelled against the sentence but were fired upon in the St George`s Field Massacre, killing 7 and wounding 15. British subjects in the American colonies closely followed Wilkes` career. His struggles convinced many colonists that the British constitution was being subverted by a corrupt ministry, an idea that contributed to the coming of the American Revolution.
