A scarce Ballingall patent flange sole putter circa 1898, smooth faced blade with a wide top line and gently curving leading edge flange sole -stamped on the back R Simpson Carnoustie-Special Patent - c/w full length lather grip. This was the first patent granted for a flange sole on either an iron or putter. According to the patent the curved leading edge and flange sole would help the club slide easily over the grass without tending to cut it up. Illus.
