Autograph Letter Signed by Daniel Finch, Earl of Nottingham, then Secretary of State, to William Blathwayt, Whitehall, 7 June 1692 , Secretary at War, reporting the grounding on 'ye blacktayl sand' of Lord Portland's ship, The Dunkirke, which would delay his arrival in Holland, 'she can't proceed in some days having thrown her guns overboard, but they will all be recovered, being th[a]t they lye dry at low water..', expressing regret that the 'Queen's orders of yesterday to [Admiral] Russell.. are too late to destroy.. ye Enemies Ships at St Malo', and forwarding a 'narrative of our late victory at sea', in which the St. Andrew and Royal William, which 'is a little too tender & does not carry her guns high enough', were damaged and sent to Chatham; he also discusses a letter from Sir William Trumball concerning a 'title' which Mons[ieu]r Collier requires and which Nottingham considers 'extraordinary,, for he has no character from ye King, but only credential letters [to ye] Grand Signr.. for promoting ye peace.. Merchants are apprehensive th[a]t he should interpose also in their affairs as amb[assado]r of ye King & not of ye States only..', 2 pages, integral leaf with autograph endorsement by Blathwayt, trace of former hinge, slightly frail, tearing and fraying repaired and strengthened, some words on the verso obscured, 4to (1)
