Avec l'explication des C‚r‚monies de l'Eglise, Et des Instructions, Prieres & courtes R‚flexions sur les Myst‚res & Offices que l'on c‚l‚bre dans cette Sainte Semaine, Par Monsieur l'Abe‚ de Bellegarde, Paris: Jacques Collombat, 1732, engraved frontispiece (with blind stamp to lower margin), additional engraved title, four engraved plates, woodcut head & tailpieces, decorative initials, lower outer corner of b1 torn, red ruled margins throughout volume, marbled endpapers with 20th century bookplate of Karl Lachmann to upper pastedown, all edges gilt, contemporary full red morocco (in the manner of Antoine Michel Padeloup le Jeune, fl. 1712-1758), decorated with gilt pointille, floral & foliage decoration, within interlaced fanfare ribbon strapwork design, centre of each board with gilt arms of Louis XIV, discreet repairs at head & foot of spine and to board corners, 8vo The central decorative design appears to occur exactly on other examples of bindings from the period. It appears the design may have been applied via a block or plate, thus enabling the decoration to be applied relatively quickly, whilst mantaining quality and accuracy. A similar example of this design can be found on a 1743 edition of the same work at the British Library (shelf C47g5). (1)

Quartermaster's map. Hollar (Wenceslaus), The Bishop=Ricke of Durham and Cumberland, Westmoreland, York=Shire, Lancast=Shire, and Parte of Linconshire, circa 1688, uncoloured engraved map, old folds, laid on later linen, 395 x 530 mm Hollar was employed by Thomas Jenner to etch a six sheet map of England and Wales, which was based on Christopher Saxton's wall map, and designed to be 'Useful for all Comanders for Quarteringe of Souldiers & all sorts of Persons that would be informed, where the Armies be; never so commodiously drawne before this, 1644'. The map, or set of maps was designed for utilitarian use, and therefore are often found backed with linen to facilitate ease of folding and carrying. The maps were re-printed three times between 1644 and 1688, the later editions show the roads. John Rocque published two late editions in 1752 and 1799. R. W. Newsmap. Newsmap for the Armed Forces, 236th Week of the War - 118th Week of U. S. Participation, Monday March 20, 1944, map of Europe showing pre and post 1939 boundaries, on verso is a half page map of the U. S. S. R. and photographs of the U. S. task force and their raid on Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas repelling Japanese aircraft, old folds slight abrasion along folds, overall size 850 x 1160 mm, together with another 39 Newsweek publications showing maps of France, The World, Malaya, Central Italy, The Eastern Front, Greece, Tunisia, North Africa and the Pacific, together with others showing Badges of rank for the Allies, German uniforms and Insignia, Italian uniforms, British aircraft, propoganda and warnings such as 'Careless talk costs Lives', all printed on both sides, old folds, a few small holes and short closed tears, occasional pencil and crayon annotations, each approximately 850 x 1150 mm Newsmaps were published by the Special Service Division, Army Service Forces, War Department. The issues were prepared and distributed by the Army Orientation Course. One standard feature that appears on all maps is a short textual summary of key events titled The War Fronts, that includes descriptions of war-related events, mostly by geographic area, such as China, Russia, Tunisia, South Pacific, Aleutians, Wake, etc. Newsmaps were produced each Monday from 1942-1946 and usually featured a map of the current war fronts on one side and a poster about a war-related topic on the other. They were distributed by the Army and Navy to primarily military installations and government & civilian groups working on War Department projects. (40)
