A Copeland Parian Ware figure, Night, signed R Monti, 53 cm high, and a similar figure of a seated lady reading, stamped 105, 31 cm high (both a.f.) (2) Condition report Report by NGCopeland Night:Little finger missing on Night's right hand. Firing cracks visible, around left hand section of drape missing, back left as you look at it from the front. Firing crack lower down on opposite side. Other chips to back of drapes. Also appears to have firing crack running at the base of the internal drape covering her body. Appears to have repair rear to base, although not obvious that it has been off completely and repaired. Chips to toes on her right foot. Rubbing and discolouration. Inside rim of base broken, with losses. Another firing crack visible between two hands.Other group with first finger missing from her right hand. It appears her left arm has been broken and glued. Book also appears to have been broken off and re-glued. Damage to stretchers on her chair.Both figures grubby and with some staining.

He trained at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools in 1908, winning the Guthrie award (c1911) and a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship which allowed him to visit and work in France."A sincere impressionist", French Impressionism was a great influence on him. He met AR Sturrock at The Royal Institution and became a member of The Edinburgh Group, a group of progressive painters that included J.G Spence Smith, D. M. Sutherland, William Oliphant Hutchison, William Mervyn Glass and A R Sturrock. He painted in both oil and watercolour, frequently depicting figures in a landscape or a town setting in an individual and often experimental style. His work was exhibited at RSA, RA, RSW and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.
ROBERT GEMMELL HUTCHISON RSA RBA ROI RSW (SCOTTISH 1855-1936),A SISTER OF MERCY (1910), Later known as "An Irish Nun Of Ypres"oil on canvas, signed, 129cm x 103cm (50.78 x 40.55 inches)Framed.Provenance: the nun is Gemmell Hutchison’s second daughter Ann (aka Nan) and the baby is Jean, the daughter of Bertie, the artist’s eldest daughter and his only grand-daughter. Jean was deaf and dumb and as a child featured in many of her grandfather’s paintings. This painting was exhibited in The Empire Exhibition, Scotland 1938. It was also loaned to Bradford City Museums & Galleries (The Cartwright Memorial Hall) but specific dates are not currently known. On Thursday 31st October 1974 the painting was sold by Ann Laidlaw, (nee Gemmell Hutchison, the nun) to Mr J. R. Finlayson (a family friend) and thereafter by descent. Labels attached and a copy of the 1974 bill of sale available to the purchaser.
