1931 Standard Nine Transmission: manualMileage:2989The Standard Motor Company was founded on 2nd March 1903 by R. W. Maudslay. He was a civil engineer by profession but realised the enormous potential of the horseless carriage and became a motor manufacturer, establishing a small factory in Coventry. He employed seven people to assemble the first car powered by a single-cylinder engine with three-speed gearbox and shaft drive to the rear wheels. By the end of 1903 three cars had been built and the labour force had been increased to twenty five. The increased labour force produced a car every three weeks during 1904. In 1914 Standard became a public company. This Standard Nine is a charming example of the marque. Originally registered in May 1931 this delightful little car runs and looks well in black. Swing open the ‘suicide’ doors to reveal a newly trimmed red interior. The appearance is enhanced with red spoked wheels with a spare externally mounted to the rear. The Lucas dashboard dials appear original as does the temperature gauge bonnet mascot. This Standard Nine is offered to auction without reserve. Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. 2003 Porsche 911 / 996 Targa Transmission: manualMileage:107080The 996 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 model; it was manufactured and sold between 1998 and 2005. On its debut, the 996 featured the most significant changes to the Carrera model since its 1963 introduction, namely the water-cooled engine replacing the previously air-cooled unit. Other changes included a sleeker body with a more steeply raked windshield and a re-designed interior. The performance characteristics remained superb with reliability at its core.Originally registered in April 2003, this 996 Targa presents well in black with a grey interior. The glass Targa roof is superb design, offering, ‘wind in the hair’ motoring at the touch of a button. The specification of this Porsche includes electric front seats, traction control and C.D player. We are informed by the engineer vendor that this well-maintained car is a joy to drive and that the manual transmission is both responsive and engaging. Offered to auction with a V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until January 2022, this is a splendid example of a highly desirable Porsche.Interested parties should note that the Targa roof on this vehicle is not working.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Transmission: automaticMileage:82894The XF is a rear-wheel-drive executive car that was manufactured by Jaguar Cars at their Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham and was a replacement for the aging S-Type. Having been designed by Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum, the car was launched at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, with deliveries to customers commencing in March 2008. The XF was launched with a variety of trims called, depending on country, 'SE', 'Luxury', 'Premium Luxury', 'Portfolio', 'SV8' (or 'Supercharged') and 'R'. The interior included air conditioning vents which are flush fitting in the dash, rotating open once the engine is started, and a rotating gearshift dial, marketed as Jaguar Drive Selector, which automatically elevates from the centre console. Another departure from the traditional Jaguar cabin ambiance is the use of pale-blue backlighting to the instruments, switchgear, and around major control panels. The XF has no cloth interior option, with all trim levels featuring leathers, wood veneers are available along with aluminium, carbon fibre and piano black lacquer trims.Originally registered on 15th October 2013, this XF is a very well equipped example being the ‘Premium Luxury’ model. 1997 Bentley Turbo R Long Wheelbase Transmission: automaticMileage:13500Based on the Mulsanne chassis, the Bentley Turbo R was built to be a serious high-performance machine, and like its predecessor, this Bentley had a turbocharged engine, however, the R was more highly tuned and a touch sportier. With Bosch fuel-injection increasing torque levels, uprated suspension, anti-roll bars, and superior dampers, the Bentley Turbo was surprisingly nimble for a car of its size and fitted with a 6750cc V8 capable of 135mph, it was a real performer in a straight line too. Rave reviews in the press helped dealers move the Turbo R in relatively substantial numbers, one report by Motor Trend described it as ‘The first Bentley in decades deserving of that famous name’. The suspension changes, though seemingly subtle, transformed the heavy car into a real performer and slotted above the Bentley Mulsanne S and Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit and it carved a well-deserved niche in the world of performance saloons. This exceptional H.R. Owen supplied Bentley Turbo R Long Wheelbase has only covered 13,500 miles from new. Registered on 1st January 1997, the first owner, being chauffeur driven, had the car for 20 years until 2017 and only covered 13,035 miles. The second owner sent the car to The Chelsea Workshop who carried out a full service and replaced the steering rack all at a cost of £4,400, in his ownership he has added a further 450 miles to the total. Finished in Diamond Blue Silver with Royal Blue hide which has been described as virtually perfect and Burr Walnut wood veneer. A superb service history accompanies P778 MRK and we have been informed that it is driving exceptionally well. This Turbo R Long Wheelbase is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in March 2022 and a file containing copies of the service history from H.R. Owen, past MoT test certificates, a copy of the build sheets and a copy of The Chelsea Workshop invoices. These magnificent machines were one of the finest ever manufactured at Crewe and are fast becoming recognised as such, and this example is probably the best of the best.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 196

2005 Bentley Arnage R Transmission: automaticMileage:51500The Bentley Arnage was launched in 1998, a large luxury saloon car that replaced the previous Bentley Turbo saloon. Built by Bentley Motors in Crewe, England from 1998 to 2009, the Arnage and its Rolls-Royce sibling named the Silver Seraph, were introduced in the Spring of 1998 and were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980 when the Silver Spirit and Mulsanne models were introduced. In 2002, Bentley updated the Red Label as the series two Arnage R. This model was launched to contrast the Arnage T, which was developed to be a more sporty variant. The Arnage R features two Garrett T3 turbochargers fitted to the engine as with the RL. Bentley quote the Arnage R as being an unrivalled example of the Grand Touring philosophy, making every journey a unique experience of power, luxury and control. A place where two very different worlds are perfectly united. Tradition and technology in absolute harmony. This stunning, three previous owner, Peacock Blue example is offered with Cotswold leather interior trim, French Navy secondary hide and carpets. It also has the rare and expensive Centenary door panels; wood veneer inserts to the doors and sits on upgraded 20” Mulliner wheels with new Continental tyres. This example, when new, cost a staggering £164,500 and is presented in stunning order throughout. Boasting an MoT test certificate valid until May 2021, a comprehensive service history including 15 stamps in the service booklet, two keys and the original two umbrellas. Sitting in the rear with the heated rear seats is second only to the front sitting in an environment of stunning aesthetics and fingertip controls. An oasis from which to savour every nuance of the twin-turbocharged 6.75 litre V8 engine, with 400bhp at your command and a 0-60 of 5.9 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph all in opulent luxury.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1968 Chevrolet Corvette C3 427ci Transmission: automaticMileage:90000This rare NCRS Top Flight 1968 Corvette Coupé is presented in Silverstone Silver with a black interior and is powered by its original matching numbers IM-L68, 427 cubic inch 400 bhp engine with correct numbers, fitted with 3x2 Holley carburettors, all of this is mated to a four-speed transmission.Boasting air conditioning, tinted glass, power steering, power brakes and complete with the original tank sticker, this car is in impeccable condition and we are informed in perfect working order. The paint is described as flawless; indeed the entire vehicle is in incredible concours condition including the undercarriage and frame.Built in early March 1968 it is believed only 116 Corvettes were built with the 427ci /400hp block mated to a four-speed gearbox. Understood to have had just three owners, the current owner has had the vehicle for 10 years. It appears to have a genuine 90,000 miles on the odometer, substantiated by the original owner’s personal maintenance notes in the Owner’s Manual which contains hand-written maintenance notes to 77,280 miles. This stunning car received an NCRS Top Flight award in 2004 and again in 2019; an award which was created by the National Corvette Restorers Society in 1974 to recognise cars that have been preserved or restored to the highest level of achievement through the NCRS Flight Judging Process. The overall score was 96.48% in 2004 and the deficits noted on the judging sheets have been corrected as noted in available documents. In September 2018, the vehicle was treated to a refresh in excess of $21,000 which included an overhaul or replacement of all major systems, key components and appearance items; receipts for which are included in the history file.Provenance is provided by way of the original tank sticker, Owner’s Manual with original owner’s maintenance notes, 2004 NCRS Regional Top Flight certificate judging sheets, receipts from the 2004 restoration and complete documentation of the freshening completed in September 2018 at Masterworks Corvette in Madison Heights, Michigan. Masterworks was founded by Werner Meier, a General Motors engineer/manager who spent over 25 years in the Corvette group and earned him admittance in the Corvette Hall of Fame and also an NCRS senior judge and group judge at the Concours D’Elegance of America. Regarded as one of the best in the world at Corvette judging and restoration, Werner restored dozens of notable Corvettes, some of which have been on display at the National Corvette Museum. Few people understand, or know how to, restore Corvettes as this man does.During restoration, only the highest quality rebuilt, N.O.S. or premium reproduction parts were used, and no unknown manufacturers were utilised as sources. In the latest restoration, the major systems of the car were replaced, overhauled or repaired including the intake manifold and removal of the oil pan and internals inspected. The compression check was very good with all cylinders registering between 108-116 psi on the 1st cycle, and 128-135 psi on the 3rd cycle. The oil pan, oil pan gaskets and rear main engine seal were replaced. Push rods, lifters, rocker arms, etc. were inspected and found to be in good condition. The transmission and rear axle were overhauled by a GM engineer and all parts found to be out-of-spec or visibly worn were replaced and the internal specs were checked and corrected. The factory specified rear axle ratio of 3.08:1 was changed to 3.36:1 during restoration (the speedo gear was also changed and is accurate to +1 mph) - this change allowed the vehicle to perform better than it did as new but can easily be returned to the original 3.08:1 ratio with little cost or effort. U-joints, driveshaft, axles were inspected, found to be in good condition and marked with appropriate paint. The brake system was extensively redone with new vacuum booster, master cylinder, master cylindercover (with bail tag), calipers, and pads. The fluid was replaced and discs were refaced. The carburettors were replaced with N.O.S. units with correct date codes, before fuel lines/blocks, linkage, cable, choke coil/cover and brackets were replaced.Key electrical components were replaced, the entire interior was removed and each assembly was then inspected and replaced if function or appearance were compromised before painted items received fresh paint. All key electrical switches were replaced and even the FM/AM radio, speakers, speaker wires, fresh air outlets replaced. The front and rear suspension was inspected, aligned and placed in spec and shocks were replaced. The tyres are correct reproduction from original moulds as red line bias-ply Sup-R-Belt - a rare option only available on late production cars. The paint and chrome appear factory new and gives the appearance of being dipped in a liquid coating. The panel fit is as original and we are informed there is no damage to body or trim and no missing trim. After the 2018 work this example was imported to the UK where in 2019 it gained a fresh NCRS Top Flight award, and in the face of much stricter criteria than in previous years it achieved an impressive overall score of 97.4 %. Offered with the dealer-installed accessory luggage rack together with a comprehensive history file, this Corvette gives an accurate impression of what the car would have looked like when new 50 years ago. With its impressive looks and performance, the quality of this car is targeted at the Corvette enthusiast who does not want to compromise on their investment but instead wants a verifiable, documented history of responsible ownership and restoration as befits one of America’s true sports cars.Ready for showing or just for recreational driving, opportunities to own such a desirable car are rare and the new owner would undoubtedly be the envy of every Corvette enthusiast.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Lot 211

2014 Renault Megane Renault Sport Trophy RS/S Transmission: manualMileage:1973Imagine a riot in four-wheeled form. While the regular Trophy already sports this car’s uprated 271bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol and Akrapovic titanium exhaust, the R features expensive Öhlins adjustable dampers, exotic Allevard composite front springs and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres for extra handling. It is also almost 100kg lighter – so although Renault will let you option back the radio for £500 (the price including sat-nav for your trouble) that would be tangential to the spirit of the thing. The standard seats are also entirely absent – the fronts replaced by a gloriously focused pair of fixed-back Recaro buckets, the rears by a strut bar and shopping-saving storage nets. The Trophy-R is surprisingly refined at a cruise. Nail the accelerator, however, and like the R26.R before it, the combination of induction roar and Ti exhaust makes this incredibly distinctive scouring noise. Further popping and banging is also present and correct for all your tarmac rallying fantasy pleasure, the steering weight is meaty and accurate, and you get to change gear with a proper six-speed manual gearbox. Only 30 Trophy-Rs were offered for sale in the UK, out of a total production run of 250 – so it is rare as well as exceptionally rapid. Judged by lap times alone, this is the ultimate expression of Renault sport’s prowess. This superb example of this ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ has only covered a mere 1,973 miles from new and is presented in white with a black interior and forms part of a small private collection. The car comes with spare floor mats which are still in their original wrapping, factory ‘set up’ details so you can prepare the car correctly for wet/dry track days etc. As well as the usual Renault factory book packs, this car also comes with a scale sized helmet which is numbered according to the manufacture number of the car. An exhilarating coupé from the French car maker, which will surely require some skill to tame when unleashed upon a circuit. Superb!Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 230

2004 Bentley Continental GT Transmission: automaticMileage:85000Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003, the first-generation Continental GT differed from previous incarnations due to it no longer being a coachbuilt car. However, as a result, the price at launch was significantly less than the Continental R (approximately half) which exposed the car to a much wider customer base. Despite the lower price however, the new GT was still roundly well received with celebrities, sports personalities alike buying in droves due to the six litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine with 552bhp coupled to opulent surroundings and an ultra comfortable ride. After all, this was designed to be a mile crunching continent cruiser and with that huge W12 engine coupled to a smooth six-speed automatic box distributed by the Quattro four-wheel drive system, it was equally at home in Mayfair as it was on the Autobahn where it was capable of an astonishing 196mph and a 0-60 time of just 4.7 seconds. The Continental offered the most comfortable way of reaching supercar speeds and, still to this day, is a fabulously capable GT.This example of an early GT is presented in Sapphire Blue over a cream hide interior and is finished with burr walnut wood trim. This Bentley boasts massage and heated front seats with electric memory, satellite navigation, electric folding mirrors and 19” alloy wheels. Offered with a stamped service history booklet, the last of which completed at circa 85,000 miles. Accompanying the Continental is an MoT test certificate valid until January 2022, various sundry invoices and the current V5 registration document. Continental GT's are incredible value for money and combine opulence with speed like no other, this example is without doubt very well priced and could represent fabulous value for money.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Lot 235

1999 Bentley Azure Transmission: automaticMileage:83946The Bentley Azure was launched in 1995 and was based on the platform of the Continental R Coupé which had been launched in 1991. The Azure intended to both convey a sense of presence and allow for comfortable seating of four adult passengers. Power came from the company's stalwart 6.75 litre, V8 featuring a single intercooled turbocharger producing in the region of 380bhp. The gearbox was a General Motors sourced four-speed automatic unit with the Azure capable of 0-60mph in an impressive 6.1 seconds. Owing to the limited space at Bentley's Crewe factory, the Azure was designed and manufactured by Pininfarina, significantly adding to the vehicle's production cost. This example of the opulent Azure is an original UK supplied car, it was first registered on 21st June 1999 and is offered in metallic silver coachwork with full black leather interior, wood (which has just been restored) and leather are offered in abundance confirming this to be a car from one of the world's premium marques. The service history is comprehensive with the first 11 services in the booklet with Bentley which covers up to 77,468 miles in 2008. The car was then serviced in 2009 before being dry stored until the summer of 2014. Since then, it has been serviced four times, the last was carried out in February this year and the car was driven very little prior to this. This car is offered with the UK V5C registration document, its original book pack and a MoT test certificate which expires in February 2022. The Azure is a grand tourer offering enormous style and luxury, whether you are going to the shops or travelling to the South of France, this Bentley is just about the perfect vehicle.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1951 Bentley Mk. VI Transmission: manualMileage:34237The Mk. VI four-door standard steel sports saloon was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley. Announced in May 1946 and produced from 1946 to 1952, it was also the first car from Rolls-Royce with all-steel coachwork and the first complete car assembled and finished at their factory. These very expensive cars were a genuine success. These models had a shorter wheelbase chassis and the engine was a variant of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith of 1946 and, with the same standard steel body, became the cautiously introduced Silver Dawn of 1949. In 1952, both Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and Bentley Mk. VI standard steel bodies were modified to incorporate a boot of about twice the size and the result became known as the R-Type Bentley. Mk. VI engines and chassis were modified to provide higher performance and sold to be bodied by selected coachbuilders as the first Bentley Continentals. This 1951 manufactured Bentley is finished in green with a beige leather interior. We are advised this right hand drive example runs well although the brakes are a bit sticky after the car has been standing for a while. Clearly some recommissioning is required but these handsome Bentleys are becoming increasingly popular and are well worth the time and investment. The car is supplied with a NOVA certificate for the new owner to register the car in the UK if required.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction.  AN IMPORTANT POCKET JOURNAL FROM 1870/71 RELATING TO CLAPHAM ROVERS, THE HISTORIC SPORTS CLUB, WITH HANDWRITTEN ENTRIES BY REG BIRKETT (1849-1898)Reg Birkett documents matches played in season 1870/71 by Clapham Rovers, revealing the chaotic nature of Victorian sport as players juggled between Rugby football and Association football. The 1870/71 season was crucial to the future of both sports. The journal with leather hardcover & lined paper, 15.5 x 10.5cms. in excellent condition. Entries in handwritten ink and newspaper reports. To accompany, a photocopy of the Rugby Football Union First General Meeting, 1871. The  1st page within the journal inscribed ‘Clapham Cricket Club Matches, 1867’ then 20 or so pages with opposing cricket clubs to be played against by Clapham, together with players for the fixture, and location of venue. From page 24- 34 these fixtures are repeated in much the same way, except with comments as to the outcome of the match. There also some changes to the previously selected players. We do not believe this part of the journal involved Reg Birkett.Entries relating to Clapham Rovers begin on P.38, as follows;‘Clapham Rovers / foot-ball club / Captain – R H Birkett / Committee – A Nash, J Field, A W French, E Field, E C Lygath (?), W R Bryden, A Luzzer (?) / Secretary & Treasurer W E Rawlinson / Season 1870-71’.The next pages lists the ‘Addresses of secretaries not on the foot-ball association’ with addresses for the following representatives / Sydenham – R W Abbott / Hornsey – E N Alfie (?) / Lausanne – F H Moore (?)  / Mohicans – Geo Ellis (?) / Harlequins – E Ellice Clark /Brighton -  Walter Foster (?) /Barnes – Walter Powell’ The next entries are ‘Members Playing Rugby Rules’ with R, P & L (Reg, Percival and Louis) Birkett at the top. Then following this is a list of ‘Association Rules’ with R & P Birkett as the second entries on the list. Then ‘A good Association team to play against first rate club like Charterhouse & Wanderers’ with Reg Birkett at top of this page suggesting he would be the first on the team-sheet if all available.   Evidently Reg is now club-captain so receives the journal and the remaining pages are handwritten by the 21-year-old.  Each page Reg includes a match fixture, the venue, Rovers’ selected players, and the outcome of match with comments, usually with a cut-out newspaper report. The matches are divided using ‘rugby’ rules and using ‘association rules’. 42 fixtures entered, 22 for the Rugby fashion, the remainder for Association code. Note that some of these entries were not played. Reg Birkett was in the team for 27 matches, mostly as captain (top of team-list). Many of the opponents were inaugural members of the 1st Rugby Union, ie. Richmond, Gipsies, Harlequins, Ravenscourt Park, Lausanne, Civil Service, Marlborough Nomads & Mohicans. There is evidence of the frustrations of acting as club captain during this period - many of the fixture dates having the two codes played on the same day. Adding to Reg’s problems would have been that 13 matches were called off (the winter of ‘70/71 was cold). Two other fixtures were called off as one of the sides could not raise the numbers. While on Feb’ 18th, with resonance to present times, a clash against Wimbledon was off ‘on account of vaccination’ (likely to be smallpox vaccination). The 1870 / 71 season was a critical season for the future of ‘foot-ball’ and especially that in the Rugby School tradition. Rugby until 1871 had been played to various rules. But in 1870 Edwin H Ash, secretary of Richmond Football Club wrote a letter to the newspapers stating, ‘those who play the Rugby-type game should meet to form a code of practice, as various clubs play to rules which differ from others, which makes the game difficult to play.’ So, 32 members of London and suburban football clubs gathered on the evening of 26th January, 1871, in the Pall Mall Restaurant, London, ‘to codify the rules of the game and to provide a central governing body.’ At this meeting, presided over by Edward Carleton Holmes (captain of Richmond Football Club) the RFU was founded. The meeting was held halfway through Reg’s journal, so it is not inconceivable that the pocket-journal was present in Reg’s breast pocket as the Rugby Union was formed.Laws were drafted, a secretary and a president were elected together with a committee of thirteen gentlemen including Reg Birkett of Clapham. Two months later, Reg Birkett was playing in the world’s 1st International Rugby match between England & Scotland at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, scoring the 1st ever Rugby International try. It was one of four International rugby matches that Reg played in. The 1870 /1871 foot-ball season also saw the first three internationals according to Association rules, played at Oval, London. It was a seminal year - Rugby Union was born, the sport formalised, and International matches of football and Rugby commenced their 150 year history.Reg was born in 1849, he was the son of a surgeon, his brother’s Percival and Louis were also players at Rovers and are in many of the selections. Louis also played rugby for England. Reg was educated at William Jacob’s School, then Lancing College where he learned both foot-ball codes. His switching between the two codes continued at Lancing Old Boys and then Clapham. He also represented Surrey FC.Six years after scoring the first ever try in the first ever Rugby International, Reg Birkett was goalkeeper for Clapham in the 8th FA Cup Final v Old Etonians at The Oval (1879), which Clapham lost. A year later in 1880, Clapham Rovers were FA Cup Winners with Reg again goalkeeper, they beat Oxford University AFC, 1-0. Reg Birkett was now an FA Cup Winner. The comprehensive nature of Reg’s journal reveals a great deal about Reg’s character. Evidently, he was committed to both codes, perhaps knowing there could be exciting times ahead, as both sports were maturing in this age of change. Reg died at 49, when, suffering from diphtheria he leapt from a window of his home. A verdict of suicide whilst delirious was returned.Reg Birkett left his mark:-Scorer of first try in the first rugby international. -FA Cup winner and International association player-Committee member of the inaugural Rugby Union. -Association’s special sub-committee member to draw up the rules for the FA Cup competition-England selector for Association. - One of only three players to represent England in rugby and footballEvidently Reg Birkett was highly influential in the two sports which today give millions of people pleasure and generate billions in the sporting economy. The journal also represents the last days of a confusing relationship between our national sports before their eternal separation.Provenance: the Birkett Sporting Archive from the great-great grandsons of Reg Birkett, see our digital catalogue for this collection with further images here https://bit.ly/2PixOMn
