He was fortunate enough to get into the closeknit film industry at the age of sixteen by starting as an assistant cameraman working with Gil Woxholt on 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1969). By working up through the camera ranks within the cinematography world he was employed by Ridley Scott's company RSA. He worked on their adverts and was employed as Scott's focus puller on 'Alien'. It was Scott who introduced Adrian to James Cameron who brought him on the production as Director of Photography, a first for Biddle. In the 1980s as film technology and lighting radically started to change, notably while 'Aliens' was in production, Adrian was one of the first to adapt to new techniques while still capturing 'the perfect negative every time' [as stated by Howard Guard for the Guardian]. No doubt his expertise was what assisted in his illustrious career. Working on numerous productions with acclaimed and popular Directors including James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Rob Reiner, Peter R. After Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA, British 1723-1792- Joanna Leigh, Mrs Richard Bennett Lloyd, inscribing her name on a tree; pencil and watercolour on paper, inscribed 'J R Shg 69' (lower left), 40 x 24.8 cm. Note: A 19th-century copy by an unidentified hand after the original in oils, held at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire [103.1995]. Joanna Leigh, later Lloyd, was the co-heiress, along with her four sisters, of the rich merchant John Leigh of Northcourt House, Isle of Wight. She married Richard Bennett Lloyd of Maryland in 1775. He came from a wealthy family who owned tobacco plantations and served as an English soldier in the Coldstream guards between 1773-1775. In 1773, the couple had their portraits painted in London and Richard was painted by the celebrated American artist Benjamin West (1738-1820). Reynolds shows Joanna carving her husband’s name on a tree, a literary reference to Shakespeare's 'As You Like It', a popular play at the Drury Lane theatre. The motif also occurs in two Italian epic poems of the 16th century: Ariosto’s 'Orlando Furioso' and Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata'.Please refer to department for condition report
James Holland, RWS, British 1799-1870- View of a water mill; watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper laid down onto the back board of a red leather album, now dismembered, possibly indistinctly signed with monogram 'JH[?]...R' (lower right), 32.7 x 21.7 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Collection of William Drummond.; Private Collection, UK. Note: For a not incomparable watercolour by the artist, see Dramas of Light and Land: The Martyn Gregory Collection of British Art Sale, Christie's, London, 24 March 2022, lot 51, 'A wooded river landscape, Wales'. Holland travelled widely on the Continent, and is particularly associated with Venice. The present watercolour likely dates to his 1850 tour of North Wales. Please refer to department for condition report
Richard Cooper, Jnr, British 1740-c.1814- Couple in a woodland; pencil on paper, signed 'R. Cooper' (upper right), 15.3 x 18.6 cm., together with eight further sketches by the artist, variously signed and inscribed, 29.9 x 22.6 cm. and smaller, a book of six engravings by Cooper, published 30 May 1799, 23 x 27 cm., and a book of 15 pencil sketches of Rome by an unknown Italian artist, 28 x 43.5 cm., eleven (11), (unframed). Provenance: Collection of William Drummond.; Private Collection, UK. Note: For comparison, see the artist's album of drawings which sold at Sotheby's, London, 6 July 2010, lot 213 (£13,750). Cooper Junior was the son of the engraver Richard Cooper (c.1696-1764). Born in Edinburgh, he trained under his father until 1758, and was then in Paris studying under the French engraver Jacques Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783). By 1761 he was living in London and exhibiting drawings and engravings at the Society of Artists. During the early 1760s he toured Spain but by 1786 he had returned to England to take up the position of drawings master at Eton College. Cooper then travelled to Italy in 1771 and was not to return until 1778. Information relating to his Grand Tour is sparse. He is understood to have been acquainted with fellow Scot Jacob More (1740-1793) whilst in Rome. He apparently enjoyed the patronage of Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803) whilst in Naples, and there are references to him travelling with a Thomas Merriman between 1771 and 1772. Upon his return to Britain Cooper settled in Charles Street, Westminster and married Frances Ramsay. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy between 1778 and 1809 and was drawing master to the Prince Regent's daughter, Prince Charlotte (1796-1817).Please refer to department for condition report
Frederick Richard Lee, RA, British 1798-1879- Burnham Beeches; watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed, titled, and dated 'Burnham Beeches / F. R. Lee. RA. 1857' on the reverse of the sheet, 30.5 x 48 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lee was celebrated for his landscape paintings. Indeed, he likely painted the settings for his collaborations with prominent contemporaries such as Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902). The British landscape and its variety was clearly a constant source of inspiration to the artist, with his works depicting expansive vistas, riverside scenes, and canopied woodland (as in the present work) alike. John Frederick Lewis, RA, POWS, British 1804-1876- On the Terrace at Ischia, Italy; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on grey paper, inscribed and dated 'Ischia. Significant discolouration and browning throughout. Possible spots of light foxing. No evidence of creasing, tearing, or water damage. Very minor marks and some minor surface dirt.
Attributed to Richard Henry Nibbs, British 1816-1893- Shipping scenes at sunset; oils on canvas, each bears old inscription 'R. Nibbs' on the upper horizontal stretcher bars, one bears inscription 'R. Nibbs' on old backing paper, each 20.5 x 40.4 cm, a pair, (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Despite producing works on a variety of themes throughout his career, Nibbs was best-known as a marine artist. His maritime paintings generally capture the extreme mutability and volatility of the sea, depicting boats on calm, flat waters as often as on stormy seas. The present pair evoke a powerful sense of calm, with their small scale minimising the drama of the seas, and the romantic skies implying the coming of evening. Ernest R. Fox, British 1862-1917- The View of Twickenham, Twickenham Ferry; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'E. R. Fox. / 1885' (lower right), signed, dated and inscribed '1st July 1883 - 2nd July 1884 ... 1885 / Twickenham Ferry. / Ernest R. Fox' on the reverse, 35.5 x 61 cm. Provenance: with W. H. Patterson, London.; where purchased by Geoffrey and Fay Elliott in 1986. Note: Throughout careers that took them to London, New York and their adopted home of Bermuda, Geoffrey and Fay Elliott amassed an eclectic and diverse collection of art and antiques. Geoffrey's early career followed his father's footsteps into the Secret Service before moving into banking. During his semi-retirement he enjoyed exploring and documenting the life of his elusive father who spent much of the war in a Nazi prison camp. This led Geoffrey to start writing about his family and he went on to publish 'I Spy: The Secret Life of a British Agent' (1998) - about his father, 'Secret Classrooms: An Untold Story of the Cold War' (2002) - about his own experience, and 'From Siberia with Love: A Story of Exile, Revolution and Cigarettes' (2004) - about his grandparents. Collecting artefacts from their extensive travels became a lifelong passion for Geoffrey and Fay, one they enjoyed and shared together. Latterly, they donated some of this sizeable collection to The Bermuda National Archives, the Morgan Library in New York, Leeds University and the British Library. Please refer to department for condition report
Roberto Angelo Kittermaster Marshall, British 1849-1926- A wooded river landscape with sheep; oil on canvas, signed 'R. Marshall' (lower left), 35.5 x 61 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is characteristic of Marshall’s oeuvre, depicting a secluded and idyllic rural scene, undisturbed by human presence. A sense of gentle movement is conveyed by the flowing of the water, expressed through the artist’s loose application of white pigment, and through the quick and free brushstrokes used to depict the rustling foliage of the landscape. Please refer to department for condition report
Follower of Robert Watson, British 1865-1916- Sheep on a grassy cliffside; oil on canvas, bears signature 'R. WATSON.' (lower right), inscribed 'Loch Lomond' (on the upper horizonal stretcher bar), 66 x 87 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is by an unidentified artist, painted in the style of Watson's highland paintings of sheep and cattle. In his lifetime, Watson's work was much in demand as Scottish scenes were very fashionable, in part due to Queen Victoria’s visits to Balmoral. Please refer to department for condition report

THOMAS DANIELL (BRITISH 1749-1840)PANCHGANGA AND DURGA GHATS, BENARES, INDIA, CIRCA 1800Oil on canvas52.5 x 42cm (20½ x 16½ in.)Provenance:Spink, London (No. K2/3772)Inchcape & Co. Ltd.Sale, Christie's, London, Arts of India, 27 September 2001, lot 1Literature:M. Schellim, Oil paintings of India and the East by Thomas Daniel, R. A. (1949-1840) and William Daniell, R. A. (1769-1837), London, 1979, p. 67, pl. TD61, illustrated as William DaniellDuring their first tour which took them along the Ganges, the Daniells sailed past Benares and made numerous sketches and drawings from the river which were later used as the basis for fully worked up oils. On 4 December 1788, William recorded in his diary 'The general view of Benares from the Pinnacle was so very grand that I stayed on Board the whole day to draw it, earing if we let slip the present opportunity that we might never see it in a better point of View' (M. Hardie and M. Clayton, Walker's Quarterly, 1932). The Daniells returned to Benares for a longer stay on their return voyage a year later (November-December). Benares (now known as Varanasi) continues to be the religious capital of India and one of the most important places of pilgrimage and of ritual bathing. The Panchganga Ghat, as its name indicates, is where five rivers are supposed to meet. The Daniells depicted the Ghats in their Oriental Scenery and the accompanying text describes them as 'the most considerable of any of the Ganges.....vast multitudes of devotees..... to this city perform penance, and transact mercantile affairs. An opinion prevails amongst them that drawing the last breath at Coss (Benares) is a circumstance much in favour of their enjoyment of future happiness' (T. & W. Daniell, Oriental Scenery, 1795-1808).Condition Report: The canvas has been relined and is slightly uneven along the upper edge. Some minor abrasions around the edges from contact with the frame. The paint layers appear stable. UV light reveals scattered retouching, mainly concentrated in the sky and water. Minor areas of very fine surface cracking. Condition Report Disclaimer
