POLANSKI ROMAN: (1933- ) French-born Polish Film Director, Academy Award winner. Rare A.L.S., R Polanski, one page, 4to, n.p. (Chino, California), 8th January 1978, to Anne Steichen. Polanski, writing from prison, thanks his correspondent for her letter and words of encouragement and remarks `I`m keeping my spirits up to the best of my ability.` In concluding he sends his best wishes for the New Year. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Polanski and signed by him in the return address panel with his prison number, R. Polanski, B-88742-2, B2-L-14, CIM-East, PO Box 500, Chino, CA 91710. Autographs of Polanski in any form from this period of his life are exceptionally rare. About EX Polanski was arrested for the sexual assault of a thirteen year old girl on 11th March 1977 and a grand jury charged him with rape. The director pleaded guilty to engaging in unlawful intercourse with a minor and the judge ordered that Polanski initially serve a 90 day psychiatric evaluation at the Chino State prison, from where this letter was written. On 28th January 1978 he was released after 42 days. Despite expectations that Polanski would only receive probation at sentencing, the judge indicated to the director`s lawyers that a jail sentence may be more appropriate. Upon hearing of these plans Polanski fled to France on 1st February 1978 just hours before he was to be formally sentenced. As a French citizen Polanski has been protected by extradition and lived mostly in France since. However, on 26th September 2009 he was taken into custody at Zurich airport by the Swiss Police at the request of the U.S. Authorities and, after initially being jailed, is currently under house arrest awaiting the decision of appeals fighting extradition.
