The Cosmatesque style was a characteristic type of ornamentation of Eastern Roman origin (opus alexandrinum) used by post-Roman marble makers of the 12th and 13th centuries A.D. It embellishes the floors, ciboria and cloisters of churches by means of polychrome marble inlays of varied and imaginative geometric shapes. The wider use of this decoration began in the 12th century, at which time techniques were improved: the Cosmati floors were made with pieces of stone cut in various shapes and sizes, a property quite different from the mosaics in opus tessellatum, in which the motifs were made from small units all having the same size and shape, or from the opus sectile, intended to create representations with pieces of multi-coloured marble cut out and arranged for this purpose. The stones used by Cosmati artists were often material salvaged from the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. The composition of such mosaics recalls the floors of the most important churches of Rome; in addition to the floor of the Sistine Chapel (created probably in the 14th century for the previous building or Cappella Maggiore), one can cite that of Santa Maria Maggiore (1145-1153 A.D.), San Giovanni in Laterano (14th century A.D.), Saint Clement (1099-1120 A.D.), Santi Quattro Coronati (13th century A.D.), Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (12th century A.D.) and many others. The same technique (but differing in its design, materials and motifs) was used to create the Cosmati pavement in Westminster Abbey, where the king rests during the coronation ceremony. The pavement has undergone a major cleaning and conservation programme and was re-dedicated by the Dean at a service on 21st May 2010.

18th century A.D. Inscribed 'God a lone made us to One WME' around the interior, the initials being M for family name with W for male forename and E for female forename, with maker's mark stamped 'NL' in rectangular cartouche, possibly for the northern goldsmith Nicholas Lee. 5.59 grams, 22.23 mm overall, 19.15 mm internal diameter (approximate size British R, USA 8 1/2, Europe 18 3/4, Japan 18) (7/8 in.). From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s. In the medieval period many rings bore posy inscriptions in Latin or French, the languages frequently spoken by the affluent elites. Later, inscriptions in English became more usual, although the lack of standardisation in spelling might surprise the modern reader. The inscription is generally found on the interior of the ring, hidden to everyone except the wearer and most of the sentimental mottoes were taken from the popular literature of the time. In fact, love inscriptions often repeat each other, which suggests that goldsmiths used stock phrases. In the later 16th century, ‘posy’ specifically meant a short inscription. A posy is described in contemporary literature as a short ‘epigram’ of less than one verse. George Puttenham (1589) explained that these phrases were not only inscribed on finger rings, but also applied to arms and trenchers. The practice of giving rings engraved with mottoes at betrothals or weddings was common in England from the 16th century onwards, and continued until the late 18th century. Sources suggest that rings could be acquired ready- engraved, or alternatively engraved sometime after their initial production, by a hand other than the goldsmith’s. Joan Evans assumed that posy rings were principally used by/between lovers and distinguished four contexts for the giving of posy rings by one lover to another: betrothals, weddings, St Valentine’s Day and occasions of mourning. Samuel Pepys’ diary makes clear that posy rings might also mark the marriage of a family member, when bearers could even commission their own rings and chose their own mottoes from books. The rings could also function as tokens of friendship or loyalty. The main camp of the Legio was Novae, modern Bulgaria, but it operated in most of the imperial provinces, including Britain, where a vexillatio fought in the wars of Septimius Severus between 202 and 204 A.D.

Imitating Hadrian's sestertius adlocutio, the emperor with a companion (or Castor and Pollux) on horseback, one of the horsemen holding a round shield; arrayed legions in front of them wearing crested helmets, raised spears and quadrangular shields; legionary eagle in the foreground; the scene enclosed within a rope border; pin lugs and catchplate to the reverse. These brooches were a mystery until one was excavated at Wiggonholt, Sussex, together with three other damaged specimens now in the Devizes Museum, all from Wiltshire (more precisely Cold Kitchen Hill). The image of the original coin was slightly modified. The local craftsman improved the coin type making his brooch more interesting, transforming the Emperor Hadrian on horseback into two cavalrymen, probably the sacred Dioscuri, while the Roman Aquila, symbol of the legions, was taken from the top of the signa and placed in the foreground. Fünf: indopersische Miniaturen, darunter eine erotische Szene. Persische Handschrift im Nasta'liq-Duktus in schwarzer Tinte auf Papier sowie großen farbigen Miniaturen. Blattgröße zwischen 14 x 19 und 23,5 x 16 cm. Miniaturen zwischen 11 x 9 und 19,5 x 11 cm. Indopersischer Raum ca. 1880-1950. Hübsche Szenen wohl aus dem Firdousi oder anderen indo-persischen Erzählungen auf teils gelatiniertem Büttenpapier des 19. Jahrhunderts mit Farsi-Schriften (wie üblich teils von den späteren Miniaturen übermalt). Die dekorativen Miniaturen zeigen Musiker in einer stilisierten Wald-Berglandschaft mit einer Tar bzw. Setar, einem persischen Zupfinstrument, drei Männer beim Fischfang am Ufer mit einem großen Wurfnetz, Hyänenjagd mit langen Speeren. Diese drei Miniaturen stammen aus derselben Handschrift, alle Bilder sind im Tondo auf einem Rechteckgrund gemalt, der mit hübschen Blüten und Goldblättchen ausgestattet wurde. Das große Blatt mit der fast ganzseitigen Miniatur in Gold und Farben zeigt einen von Goldgrund wolkig umgebenen dreizeiligen Text oben und darunter die Miniatur mit einem Liebesstelldichein, bei dem eine junge Palastschönheit ihrem auf einem Teppich in der Berglandschaft hingelagerten Maharadscha wohl eine Speise reicht, während dieser eine Weinflasche in Händen hält und sich auf einem weichen Kissen zurücklehnend ihr eine Schale hinhält. Im Hintergrund ein Reh und zwei dicke Schnecken, unten das wartende Pferd, über dem Halbrund des Berges der Sternenhimmel. Auf der letzten Miniatur vergnügen sich fünf hübsche junge und reich geschmückte, sonst nackte Frauen mit einem Jüngling, der auf einem Diwan hingestreckt im Liebesakt mit einer auf ihm sitzenden Jungfrau dargestellt ist, während seine Hände und Füße die Vulven der anderen vier Begleiterinnen befriedigt. - Wenige Gebrauchsspuren, kaum Farbabrieb, Trägerpapier teils leicht fleckig.
