ABRAHAM-LOUIS-RODOLPHE DUCROS (1748-1810) AND GIOVANNI VOLPATO (1732-1801) VUE DU TEMPLE DE JUPITER STATOR A ROME signed Volpato et Ducros and inscribed on the original mount, watercolour over etching in double black line border, 71 x 92cm (78 x 58cm overall) Ducros and Volpato`s Vues de Rome des Des Environs proved a great success with aristocratic grand tourists. Meusel, writing in his Miscellaneen of 1781 stated that "M Ducros of Yverdon, who has gained an excellent reputation in Rome, is working in collaboration with M Volpato on a collection of illuminated views… twelve pieces in the format of the School of Athens are finished, as well as twelve of medium size. M Ducros engraved [sic] the copper plates making only the outline, then, under his and M Volpato`s direction the engravings [sic] are illuminated by young artists with the result that they are barely distinguishable from original drawings". Ducros` fellow Swiss, Peter Birmann (1758-1844) who worked in the studio from 1782 recalled that "Ducros, in collaboration with the celebrated engraver Volpato, had an art business which he ran almost alone, while his associates guided and supervised the engravers and painters in a superb studio." The present example conforms to others, some of which bear a date of between 1780 and 1784 accompanied by the title, either written in ink or printed on a separate piece of paper serving as the mount.
