A Victorian 1857 pattern 4th Bengal Cavalry Light Cavalry Officers Sword by E Thurkle, London:, the straight single edged blade with acid etched decoration of a lion passant over 'IV' and 'BL' cipher, also decorated with the initials 'A De. V.A' beneath family crest, makers mark to shoulder as per title, three quarter pierced steel guard with single quillon, wire bound fish skin grip, together with a steel scabbard with double suspension loops and button to throat, blade length 89cm.*Notes- Research shows that the cutler E Thurkle was at Soho from 1876 to 1899 and that this sword was made for A De-Vere Alexander who , during his career in the army serve with the 4th Bengal cavalry from June 1875 to July 1877 and from December 1878 to September 1885. In its present form the sword is of 1896 pattern, however the blade is older and has been re-hilted to comply with the Dress Regulations of 1896.

There is some dirt beneath the glass and heavy scratching to the glass. There are small losses to the gold bezel. Looking at the edge of the frame, there appear to be what look like brass pins and some small splits, possibly as a result of reattaching the caseback after restoration or opening. There are some seed pearls missing from the glazed compartment, some also rattling around inside.
