Lander, Richard & John Journal of an Expedition to Explore the Course and Termination of the Niger in 2 Volumes (c1832) 10x15cm The Landers were commissioned by the British Colonial Office to complete what had been left undone by the Clapperton expedition to the Niger River. They mapped the Niger from its source to where it emptied into the Bight of Benin. First American Edition, issued the same year as the London edition. The plates and maps are a mix of wood and steel engravings, stipple engravings, etc. In series: `Harper`s family library`. 2 vols. I: frontis + xiii + map + 384 + 2 maps (one fold.). II: frontis + 7pp + 337 + 2pp advertisements + 3 plates. Light wear to boards, spine ends slightly chipped, foxing on first and last pages of each volume and inscriptions on inside front covers, otherwise clean, tightly bound and very good copies. Mendelssohn (Sydney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, pages 416-417, Das Neves who visited the Transvaal in 1860 in order to hunt elephant and trade in ivory, records his impressions of the Transvaal during this period. He describes his experiences hunting game including hippopotamus, lion, and buffalo, and he also records the oral history of local Shangaan and Swazi regarding the events surrounding the assassination of Dingane. This is the first of Lawrence Green`s early titles published in prewar London. The `Coast Of Treasure` alluded to in the title is the coast of what was then German South West Africa, now Namibia. Thornton, Robert John Thornton?s Temple of Flora folio (435x310 mm) Original engravings and the work describes by Geoffery Grinson with Bibliographical Notes by Handasyde Buchanan. Frontpiece and 11 colour plates, 24 collotypes in black and white, folio (435x310 mm), quarter brown calf with green paper sides, top edge gilt, light foxing on the endpapers, preliminary pages and page edge, the plates ? all with tissue guards ? are bright. No other English book of flower illustrations is more celebrated than this one. This edition of Thornton?s Temple of Flora has been designed and produced for William Collins, 14 St Jame?s Place, London, by George M. rainbird and Ruari McLean. The colour and collotype plates have been printed by Van Leer of Amsterdam and the text pages set in Monotype Perpetua and printed by Meyer of Wormerveer on Van Gelder mould-made paper. The binding has been executed at the London Craft Bindery of W.H. Smith and Sons. The wrapper design and label is based on that used for the rare original parts in which the Temple of Flora was issued. The label and the calligraphic title-page were drawn by Johan Brinkley. This Special edition on hand-made paper is limited to 250 copies, of which this is number 194. Apart from the inscription on the front pastedown and a faint initial on the ffep. and some light offsetting to the fep.`s, this is a very clean unmarked and unfoxed copy in the bright original grey cloth. The scarce dw. has about 1/2cm. chipping at the top of the spine, some edge wear and fraying, some creasing at the top of the rear panel and one internal tape repair of a closed tear. However still in better state than most wrappers of this title that I have seen. A very collectible copy.
