Circle of ALESSANDRO MAGNASCO (Genoa, 1667 - 1749)."Saint Eremite".Oil on canvas. Glued to panel. It presents faults and restorations.Measurements: 37,5 x 22,5 cm.Due to its formal characteristics we can place this work in the circle of Il Lissandrino, nickname of Alessando Magnasco, Italian painter of the last Baroque. He is particularly remembered for his stylised and fantastic landscapes and genre scenes, although he also tackled religious themes. His personal style is characterised by fragmentary forms constructed through rapid brushstrokes and brilliant points of light. Born in Genoa, the son of a minor painter, Magnasco trained first as a pupil of Valerio Castello and later in Milan in the studio of Filippo Abbiati. Apart from the time he spent in Florence working for the Grand Duke Cosimo III (1703-09 or 1709-11), Magnasco remained in Milan until 1735 when he returned to his native Genoa. During his Milanese period he often collaborated with other painters in the Central European manner, painting figures in the landscapes of Carlo Antonio Tavella and the ruins of Clemente Spera. His personal style, which earned him the title of "Romantic painter" a century after his death, has obscure and disputed origins. Some suggest the influence of the loose brushstrokes of his Venetian contemporary Sebastiano Ricci, the Genoese Domenico Piola and Gregorio de Ferrari, although in fact these three artists may themselves have been influenced by Magnasco. The late 16th- and early 17th-century Milanese Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli ("Il Morazzone") may also have been influenced by Magnasco, due to the emotion that his works convey. In some of them, however, he refers to the Romantic landscapes of Salvatore Rosa and Claudio da Lorena, and his figures of beggars have been compared to those of Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Magnasco's works are now in the Museo del Prado, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna, the Metropolitan in New York and other leading institutions in Europe and America.

Lot 128

Spanish school; 18th century."Immaculate Conception".Oil on copper. It has slight repainting and damage. It conserves original frame with slight faults.Measurements: 24,5 x 18,5 cm; 29,5 x 24 cm (frame).Following autochthonous, Andalusian and Castilian Baroque models, the painter of this Marian representation has composed a sublime break of glory, in which the Virgin, victorious over evil, crushes the head of the serpent with her right foot. The reptile does not have the usual apple between its jaws, which embodies temptation. The Virgin, light and monumental at the same time, thanks to the masterful chromatic and lighting work, is surrounded by angels arranged symmetrically around her: a court of seraphim, and at the top. Below the serpent and the lunar representation, the orb is drawn beneath her bare feet, emphasising the glorious role of the Mother of God. The theme of the Immaculate Conception, which was very common in 17th-century Spanish art, became one of the hallmarks of Spain's national identity as a Catholic country. It is one of the most genuinely local themes in Spanish Baroque painting, as Spain was the main defender of this mystery and the country that fought most insistently to make it a dogma of faith. In this context, numerous artists and intellectuals worked to construct a clear iconography that would help to disseminate the Immaculate Conception, bringing together symbolism and popular fervour.

Lot 73

Italian school; 17th century."Christ washing the feet of the apostles".Oil on canvas.Measurements: 32 x 39,5 cm; 46,5 x 52 cm (frame). It is represented here a scene narrated by the Gospel of John, widely treated in the baroque painting. Christ kneeling before Peter, prepares to wash his feet. The rest of the apostles surround the two figures and exchange impressions, looking stunned by the idea of being washed by their Lord. The figure of Jesus, distinguished from the others by his attitude and the light that seems to emerge from within him, determines the arrangement of the rest of the figures. The architectural space, with bare walls, has a greater presence on the right-hand side of the scene, being configured along a diagonal that allows for greater amplitude in the rest of the scene. The interior is spartan and dark, so that the figures are constructed by the chiselling of light. Stylistically, the work belongs to the Italian school of the Baroque, in which a classicist conception of drawing and pure, emphatic forms stand out.The Gospel of John tells us that during the Last Supper, Jesus rose from the table, took off his cloak and tied a towel around his waist. After pouring water into a basin, he began to wash his disciples' feet. Simon Peter pretended to refuse, but when Jesus insisted that otherwise he could have no part with him, he agreed to have his feet washed. The washing of feet was a common ritual in Eastern culture, in fact, in the Old Testament we find examples of this practice, for example in the visit of the angels to Abraham. Such an action is associated with hospitality, but Jesus' gesture towards his apostles adds a new significant dimension that alludes to humility.

Lot 74

European school; 19th century."Still life".Oil on canvas. The original canvas is preserved. It presents faults and repainting.Measurements: 64,5 x 82 cm.In this canvas the author offers us a still life of classic style, rooted in the tradition of the genre, with a clear and ordered composition and an expressive treatment of the light. The still life was one of the most characteristic genres in Europe. The term appeared as early as the end of the 16th century. The still life or still life occupied the lowest rung of the hierarchy of genres in the history of art, but it became increasingly popular with buyers. In addition to the independent subject of the still life, it addressed other types of painting themes by using prominent, usually symbolic elements and images that drew on a multitude of elements from nature apparently to reproduce a part of life.

Lot 80

Spanish school; 17th century."Christ on fire".Earthenware.Measurements: 36 x 28 x 12 cm.Round sculpture made of terracotta with a religious character. In this sculpture the author has reproduced the image of Christ with his hands crossed on his chest, a gesture that reminds us to a great extent of the iconography of Christ in prison, despite the fact that in the sculpture no detail can be seen that shows this attitude. The figure of Christ is dressed in a red cloak, symbolising the moment of the Passion. The sculpture stands out for the sobriety and austerity of the elements, thus confronting the viewer only with the figure of Christ. In which the sculptor has not only emphasised the monumentality through the elongation of the proportions, but also, with the polychromy, has managed to create an expressive image in which the suffering and the sufferings of Christ can be observed.Spanish Baroque sculpture is one of the most authentic and personal examples of our art, because its conception and form of expression arose from the people and their deepest feelings. With the economy of the state in ruins, the nobility in decline and the clergy heavily taxed, it was the monasteries, parishes and confraternities of clerics and laymen who encouraged its development, with the works sometimes being financed by popular subscription. Painting was thus obliged to express the prevailing ideals in these environments, which were none other than religious ones, at a time when Counter-Reformation doctrine demanded a realistic language from art so that the faithful could understand and identify with what was depicted, and an expression endowed with an intense emotional content to increase the fervour and devotion of the people. Religious themes were therefore the preferred subject matter of Spanish sculpture of this period, which in the early decades of the century was based on a priority interest in capturing the natural world, gradually intensifying over the course of the century in the depiction of expressive values, which was achieved through movement and the variety of gestures, the use of light resources and the representation of moods and feelings.
