Photography - Militaria, Boer War, Scots Guards - Captain Cecil Fife Pryce Hamilton (1879-1914), later MiD in World War One and fell at Ypres, three of his photograph albums, each numbered and/or dated: 1901, Volume 2: 1898-1904 & Volume 3: 1905-, 1) the first album is illustrated and annotated with photographs (usually official but a few leisurely taken) of the 3rd Batallion Scots Guards officers on General Inspection at Hythe, are dated 1901-1902 and include Lord Roberts' Inspection in 1902, Sir Morgan Crofton's 8 H.P. Argyle (sic, Argyll motor car), post-Boer War 1st Battallion inspections after South Africa including the Duke of Connaught's address and presentation of medals, the Return of Lord Kitchener, "Jock" the dog - presumably the battalion or regiment's mascot, Marshall Roberts' Leaving Dinner, Col. Fludyer's Farewell June 1903, then the battalion at ease and on parade at Windsor, NCOs in parade dress, Col. Harboard's Farewell April 19004, Minstrel Troup 1903-4, Scots Guardsmen with early motorbikes flying the Royal Standard of Edward VII, manoeuvres, Pipe Major Ross, sporting competitions and trophies, S.S. "Drayton Grange", the London District School of Instruction at Chelsea Barracks, etc; 2) the second album is again illustrated and annotated with photographs (usually official but a few leisurely taken), Hamilton notes that of the 683 images 650 were taken by him and the remaining 33 by others, they illustrate the life a typical Edwardian gentleman-officer with summers spent yachting in the Solent full of fun on pleasure yachts, with further shots of Royal Navy warships and H.M.S. Victory, military camping accompanied by the regimental servants with some occasional shooting (sport), the Victoria Barracks at Southsea, Chum the dog and the 85th's cat, all before and including the steamship off to South Africa and the Boer War, ?via St. Vincent showing scenes of domestic and native real life, and then Cape Town, Simonstown - with its prisoner of war camp and illustrating their recreational bathing, Bloemfontein, Kaffirfontein, the war images showing scenes of action, including battle and artillery, as well as informal 'behind the scenes' shots of their domestic arrangements and comradery, then back for summer 1902 in Hythe with a subsequent naval review, stay at Cheveley Park Stud, Newmarket - showing the race horses and the country house's interior, Villa Beaumeville at Nice and Hatley Park, Sandy, Bedfordshire, snapshots of motoring friends with their cars (19), some light British and French topography, General French and life with comrades at Victoria Barracks, Cowes, the Brigade Regatta 1903, a house party at Farnborough Hall, Warwickshire, further motoring, manoeuvres and training, etc; 3) the third and final album is again illustrated and annotated with photographs of early motoring (both chauffeurs and gentleman drivers, manoeuvres at Southampton and sea in 1904, further country house visits and their interiors, the Daily Telegraph and Dewar Cup Teams, 1905, the Guard Mounting, Chelsea Barracks, Wroxhall Abbey, Trooping the Colour, Cowes Week and the French Fleet's visit 1905, Nice Carnival 1906, Kirtlington Park, Oxfordshire - architectural elevation and interior views, battalion training and drill, further motor cars, Nice and Rome holidays, winter sports and skiing, medals and regimental colours, etc., each bound in a harlequin half or quarter-leather over cloth album, rebacked and some repairs, the covers monogrammed C.P.H., all edges gilt, oblong folios (28cm x 40cm & 28cm x 38.5cm), [3] Provenance: Purchased from Tony Martin Antiques, East Looe, Cornwall, in 1981 for £115, loosely inserted receipt of sale.
