Joseph Meeker (American, 1827-1887). Oil on canvas titled "Morning on the Upper Mississippi" depicting riverboats steaming along Lake Pepin in the dawn light. Signed and dated 1878 along the lower left. There is a label from Richard York Gallery, New York, New York, affixed to the verso, indicating the artwork was included in the 1983 "Sunset to Dawn" exhibition; there are additionally labels from Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, New York, and the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, South Carolina.Joseph Meeker grew up in New England, and studied under Hudson River School painter Asher B. Durand at the National Academy of Design in New York City. As Meeker began working independently as an artist, he worked creating landscapes heavily influenced by the Hudson River School and by Luminism. MeekerÃs relationship with the Mississippi River began during the American Civil War, when he served as a paymaster for the Union Navy on a gunboat sailing up and down the Mississippi River. He was enchanted by the scenes of the bayous, and did extensive sketches of river scenes during this period. Following the war, Meeker made paintings from these sketches, which proved to be extremely successful. Although he is best known for his landscapes of the southern Mississippi, Meeker also traveled up his cherished river to explore its northern reaches. This artwork is the result of one of those journeys. It depicts Lake Pepin as it was in the late 1870sñan important stopover point for the industry and travel steaming up and down the Mississippi. All this industry, however, is overshadowed by the natural beauty of the location: the tall bluffs looming over the water, touched by the first pink of the morning light, the lush trees reaching down to the edge of the lake; and the gulls swooping across the rippled surface of the river, up toward the cloud-studded sky. It is MeekerÃs eye for the unique beauty of a place that makes his work exceptional; more than just the landscape, he captured the spirit of the locations he painted.Unframed; height: 25 in x width: 30 in. Framed; height: 34 in x width: 39 in.

ALEXANDER JAMIESON ROI (SCOTTISH 1873 - 1937),ON THE SEINE PARIS, VIEW OF THE PONT NEUFoil on board, titled versoimage size 17cm x 27cm, overall size 24cm x 34cm Framed.Note: Alexander Jamieson was born in Glasgow and studied at the Haldane Academy before winning a scholarship to Paris. It was there, in 1898, that he came into contact with the work of the French Impressionists, whose bravura brushwork and preoccupation with the effects of light and atmosphere were to be his chief painterly concerns for the remainder of his life. It was also in Paris that he met the painter Gertrude (Biddy) Macdonald who he married in 1907. In his foreword to Jamieson's memorial exhibition, Sir John Lavery wrote, ''He dipped his brush in light and air … Many a time I have been struck by his wonderful perception and clear judgement, his keen sense of colour and composition, allied with a masterly technique, which enabled him to convey his impression in the simplest language.'' Some 33 of Jamieson's paintings are held in UK public collections.
GUILLAM FORCHONDT THE OLD (Antwerp, 1608-1678)."The Assumption of the Virgin.Oil on copper.Signed in the upper left corner.Size: 70 x 85 cm; 85 x 100 cm (frame). In this majestic copper by Guillam Forchondt the Elder is shown the Assumption of the Virgin, taken in body and soul to Heaven, in a triumphal and scenographic way. Behind her opens the Glory, represented by the golden divine light, an elaborate break in the margins of which we see a multitude of angels in different positions, some looking down to earth and others upwards. On the earthly plane, clearly differentiated from the heavenly plane by the line of clouds, the figures gather around the Virgin's open tomb. They are the apostles and other women who, having witnessed Mary's death, marvel at her Assumption. Some of them are depicted with their backs to the tomb, closing a circular composition defined around the tomb, classical and orderly despite the apparent crowding of the figures in favour of the theatricality and, above all, the dynamism of the scene. Most of the figures are shown looking up towards the sky, with their hands raised in surprise as well as veneration, a skilfully narrative aspect. We see how Mary does not ascend to heaven by her own means, like Christ, but is raised to Paradise by the angels. As is customary in Western art, the artist depicts her bodily Assumption outside the tomb where the apostles had buried her.Guillam Forchondt the Elder was a Flemish painter and art dealer. He captained a successful painting workshop that spread throughout Europe through his sons' offices in Vienna, Lisbon and Seville. Through the port of Cadiz, works were shipped to Mexico and sold to local convents. He played a very important role in the dissemination of Flemish Baroque art in Europe and South America, even changing the dealer-artist relationship by involving himself in the organisation of the artistic production process. His lucrative business was continued by his son, Guillam Forchondt the Younger (1645-after 1677), who turned it into an international art and luxury goods enterprise. Among his numerous clients were prominent personalities of the time, such as the Emperor of Austria and the Princes of Liechtenstein. As a painter, Forchondt worked in the Flemish Baroque style of Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Younger, Joos de Momper and David Teniers the Younger, clearly adapting his production to market demand. Many of his works can be considered pastiches or reduced copies of works by Rubens. At that time there was a great demand abroad, and particularly in Spain, for paintings in the style of the great Flemish masters, such as Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. Art dealers such as the Forchondts, who had local representation in several foreign countries, facilitated the trade in these paintings.
Northern European school of the 18th century."Saint Ioanna".Burin engraving illuminated by hand on vellum.Measurements: 17 x 12 cm.Devotional image of Saint Joan engraved with burin and later polychromed by hand. It represents the Saint crowned, with a halo of light and holding a crucifix. At her side, the Child appears to her and gives her a ring, which she delicately places in her right hand. The piece resembles the drawings on parchment that came from miniated codices, types of manuscript and illustrated books that were produced in the "Scriptorium" or specialised workshops of the monasteries by monks of great artistic and doctrinal qualification for the monasteries themselves, the churches and the kings.
Sevillian school, 18th century."Immaculate surrounded by angels".Oil on canvas.Cracked in the painting.Frame with slight chipping.Measurements: 80 x 60 cm; 92 x 71 cm (frame). This successful representation of the Immaculate Conception is part of the Spanish Baroque, and more specifically, it derives from the Murillesque school. This model of the Immaculate Conception emerging from a gilded background and surrounded by cherubs was initiated by Murillo, who used this same theme in dozens of paintings, creating his own iconography. In it, he wished to eliminate the superfluous in order to focus on the enveloping effect of the golden atmosphere illuminating the Virgin. The present painting inherits Murillo's teaching: the softness of the features and their ethereal appearance, thanks to a skilful play of light. Mary, dressed in white and blue (symbols of purity and the concepts of truth and eternity, respectively), appears surrounded by child angels, who have been skilfully modelled in foreshortened and varied poses, playing amidst cottony clouds. The Virgin's mantle is fluttering in a gentle breeze, draped beautifully. The angels carry symbols of litanies, such as bunches of flowers and palms. The Holy Spirit (the symbol of the dove traditionally associated with this theme) has been omitted, but the ascending movement of the figure is conveyed by the subtle chromatic shifts. This painting clearly corresponds to "The Immaculate Conception of the Venerables", painted by Murillo around 1660 and now in the Museo del Prado.
Italian school of the 18th century."Portrait of Michelangelo Tamburini".Oil on canvas. Re-framed.The frame of the 19th century is damaged.Measurements: 43 x 33 cm; 50 x 39,5 cm (frame). We see in this canvas a bust portrait of a gentleman with a severe look, fixed on the spectator, without more symbols of his rank than the dignity that his face gives off. His vividly illuminated face is modelled precisely through the magnificently worked contrast of light and shade, which allows us to relate him to Michelangelo Tamburini, General of the Society of Jesus. Technically, the technique is notable for the use of precise, defined brushstrokes. In addition to the use of light that falls on the flesh tones, highlighting the gaze, of great psychological depth. This was a fundamental aspect of portraiture of the period, the intention of which was to convey the personality and mood of the sitter, which was not expressed in earlier periods that focused exclusively on external appearance. Other portraits by Michelangelo Tamburini are housed in important international museums, such as the one in the Museo Nacional del Virreinato in Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico.Michelangelo Tamburini (1648-1730) was a general of the Society of Jesus. He was successively professor of philosophy and theology, rector of colleges, Venetian provincial, secretary general, vicar general and superior general from 31 January 1706 until his death.
