Though published to critical acclaim the novel sold poorly and was largely forgotten until a recent revival that culminated in Jane Campion's superb 2021 film adaptation. Many copies allegedly went to libraries and first editions in good condition are consequently scarce.

Burchfield (1923-2004) studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was tutored by C. S. Lewis and Tolkien. Burchfield would go on to develop a Tolkien-like fascination with linguistics and would become the editor of the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary (a project that would span some 30 years). The two men remained friends and correspondents for much of their lives with Burchfield later crediting Tolkien as "the puckish fisherman who drew me into his glittering philological net".

Forbes spent seventeen years in India and filled numerous volumes with writings and sketches. The fine hand-coloured plates are mostly of natural history, particularly birds and fruits.Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons Bart. (1851-1925), scientific author, barrister and pioneer of road transport. His home at Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells is now the Salomons Museum and a centre for technology. Salomons was fascinated by electricity and Broomhill was one of the first homes to be fitted with electric light, as well as an early electric cooker, butter churn and alarms, all made by him and his staff in his workshops. He was also an horologist and assembled the largest private collection of watches and clocks by Abraham-Louis Breguet.

The book was gifted by actress Kate Draper to the playwright and screenwriter Dick Vosburgh on the occasion of the opening night of Vosburgh's A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine in which Draper was appearing.

With a chapter containing an account of the mission and capture of Mr. Rassa and his companions..., first edition, half-title, 3 folding colour lithographed maps, 2 lithographed plans, one folding, large map with short tear repaired, some light foxing, bookplate of J.Talbot Clifton of Kildalton, contemporary black calf prize binding with gilt arms of Haberdasher's Company to upper cover, spine gilt with red roan label, 1869, 8vo (2)⁂ In 1863 Emperor Theodore or Tewodros II of Ethiopia had requested British military assistance from Queen Victoria against the Turks, but when he did not receive a reply he imprisoned the British Consul and some missionaries in the fortress at Magdala. A British force was sent to rescue them, culminating in the Battle of Magdala in 1868. The British won, Theodore committed suicide, and the fortress was destroyed.

Reflections in Palestine. 1883, half-title, map, 1884, together 4 works in 1 vol., the first two with original printed upper wrapper with frontispiece on verso, bound in handsome contemporary brown morocco, gilt, by H.Burnside of Blackheath, spine gilt, g.e., spine very slightly faded; and a small work on the thoughts of General Gordon, 8vo et infra (3)⁂ Frank Power was a journalist who sent back dispatches to The Times during the siege of Khartoum. It also contains accounts of game hunting and the slave trade.

Leonard (Peter) Records of a Voyage to the Western Coast of Africa...for the Suppression of the Slave Trade..., first edition, 4pp. table at end, occasional light soiling, contemporary half calf, rubbed, marbled paper on boards and endpapers renewed, Edinburgh, 1833 § M'Leod (John) A Voyage to Africa with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People, first edition, 4 etched plates, browning and offsetting, cropped, contemporary half calf, rubbed, 1820, small 8vo (2)⁂ Both the authors served as ship surgeons, M'Leod in 1803 on a slave ship, and Leonard during the early 1830s on HMS Dryad preventing the slave trade. Leonard's work contains a list of vessels engaged in the slave trade captured by the Dryad and her tenders.

Lobo (Jeronimo) A short Relation of the River Nile, of its Sourse and Current; of its Overflowing the Campagna of Aegypt..., translated by Sir Peter Wyche, first edition in English, with initial imprimatur leaf but not final blank, imprimatur leaf with small holes and torn at inner margin (old repair), title slightly defective at lower outer corner not affecting text, F8 with small repair to lower margin, some light browning, engraved bookplate of John Stackhouse, later calf-backed marbled boards, rubbed, spine ends slightly chipped, [Wing L2733], small 8vo, for John Martyn, 1669.⁂ Account of a Jesuit missionary's travels in Ethiopia from 1625 to 1633; originally written in Portuguese it was translated from the manuscript by Sir Peter Wyche for the Royal Society. It includes descriptions of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, Arab shipping, Prester John, "the famous Unicorne", and palm trees.
