CHAPLIN & GODDARD: CHAPLIN CHARLES (1889-1977) English film comedian, Academy Award winner & GODDARD PAULETTE (1910-1990) American actress, the third wife of Chaplin from 1936-42. An unusual vintage signed and inscribed sepia 8 x 10 photograph, the candid image depicting Chaplin, Goddard and Captain Karl A. Ahlin standing together, arm-in-arm, in full-length poses on the deck of the SS President Coolidge. Signed by Chaplin in fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the head of the image and signed and inscribed by Goddard in fountain pen ink to the image, adding the words 'on board S. S. Coolidge' in her hand beneath her signature. Also dated, possibly in Goddard's hand, 21st February 1936 to the upper right corner of the image. Both signatures are a touch light in places and Goodard's surname runs across a darker area. A few minor surface and corner creases, one slightly affecting Chaplin's signature. About VG Karl A. Ahlin (1867-1953) Captain of the luxury ocean liner S.S. President Coolidge from her maiden voyage in October 1931 until Ahlin's retirement in May 1939. Chaplin and Goddard had begun a relationship in 1932, and married in secret in June 1936, just a few months after signing the present photograph. 1936 was also the year in which Chaplin and Goddard starred alongside each other in the classic satirical romantic black comedy film Modern Times, which was also directed by Chaplin and represented the last performance of his iconic Little Tramp character.

An excellent, original pencil drawing signed by Walt Disney, one page, 4to, n.p. (Burbank. California), n.d. (1940s). Disney has executed a swift, although highly appealing, image of the head of Mickey Mouse, undoubtedly his most famous creation. Boldly signed ('Walt Disney') with a large signature immediately beneath the sketch. Matted in pale brown within an oval aperture alongside a photograph of Disney in a smiling head and shoulders pose and attractively framed and glazed in a modern decorative frame to an overall size of 20.5 x 14.5. A wonderful original drawing, both rare and highly desirable. One light, minor stain to the head of the page, not affecting the image or signature, VGProvenance: Accompanied by a typed letter of provenance signed by Michael Miller, dated 22nd March 2023 and stating, in part, 'My mother, Suzanne (Suzie) Miller started working at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California on the 21st of October 1940. She worked there until 1944 in the eight wing animation building, and would work around artists, animators and story men…..Walt's office was also used for conferences with directors, animators, artists and any creative team would share ideas in order to create the next big Disney hit. After a meeting, my mother asked Walt for a signature, and Walt kindly smiled and drew this sketch of Mickey and signed it in pencil. She kept it since the 1940's and was then given to me, Michael Miller (her son)'.

BERNHARDT SARAH: (1844-1923) French stage actress. An unusual A.L.S., Sarah Bernhardt, to the recto and two inside pages of an oblong 12mo folding correspondence card featuring her printed monogram, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (March 1921), to an official (name illegible), in French. Bernhardt enquires 'Voulez-vous etre assez aimable pour me donner l'autorisation de mettre une petite marquise pour le mercredi 9 pour du mariage de ma petite fille' (Translation: 'Will you be kind enough to give me permission to put up a little marquee for Wednesday 9th for my granddaughter's wedding?'). Signed to the lower left corner of the inside by an official across the circular stamp of the Prefecture de Police, authorising Bernhardt to erect the marquee, dated Paris, 4th March 1921. Accompanied by the original (unmarked) matching envelope. Some light staining and a couple of minor ink blots, VGBernhardt's youngest granddaughter, Lysiane Bernhardt (1896-1977), married Louis Jacques Marie Collin in Paris on 8th March 1921. The couple were divorced just a few years later on 7th June 1924, and Lysiane would marry for a second time in March 1928.

Signed ('Muhammad Ali') in bold black ink to a light area at the centre of the image, further adding the sentiment 'Serve God, He is the Goal' beneath his signature and the date, 17th August 1989, in his hand to the lower white border. A light horizontal crease to the centre is only slightly evident to the eye. G
