William Henry Millais (British 1828-1899) Frensham Watercolour heightened with white Signed, titled and indistinctly dated 18[]6 lower left 26 x 42cm (10 x 16½ in.) Provenance: Property of the artist's family Thence by descent William Henry Millais (1828-1899) was the elder brother of John Everett Millais. Little is known about William but his artistic output showed his passion for engraving and watercolours. In particular he focused on depicting landscapes in watercolour capturing the light and detail in nature. This collection represents some of the exquisite watercolours he produced whilst he lived at The Old Priory in Millbridge, Frensham, Surrey. Millais exhibited landscapes at the Royal Academy in 1852-3, 1876, and in 1890-3, which included 'Beddington Park, Surrey' and 'Sea View, Isle of Wight'. William Henry Millais saw himself as an assistant to his brother but they did collaborate on a number of works mostly in the 1850s. In June 1853 the brothers moved with Effie Ruskin, John Millais' lover, to Brig o'Turk in the Trossachs, Scotland and remained until the October.
