J. Ross, Chester 1911, length 9.1cm. £60-£80 --- After the painting of the Trusty Servant, hanging on the wall beside the kitchen at Winchester College, first painted in 1579 by John Hoskins, the current painting by Wiliam Cave, 1809. Guernsey: a George II silver Hanoverian pattern dessert spoon, with ridged stem and rat tailed bowl, the engraved initials ‘E S B’ probably added later, maker’s mark crowned ‘G H’ and black letter ‘R’ for Guillaume Henry, length 17.5cm. £200-£300 --- Guillaume Henry is regarded as one of the foremost Channel Isles silversmiths, his work comparing favourably with the best London makers of the period. An 18ct gold and diamond spray brooch by Michael Gosschalk, 1960, the stylised frond of scroll design and set with an old brilliant-cut diamond highlight, maker’s mark, London hallmark, length 5cm. £500-£700 --- After originally trading as a stone merchant, Michael Gosschalk opened his first retail premises in 1957 at 20 Motcomb Street in Belgravia, London. Between 1957 and 1965 he was a hugely influential figure in the London jewellery world, his bold designs bringing fun and glamour back into everyday London life, the city still suffering from post-war austerity. As well as Gosschalk’s own impressive list of private clientele, Andrew Grima sold his jewels exclusively through Gosschalk’s retail outlet before opening his own shop in 1962. After an armed robbery in 1965, Michael Gosschalk closed his London store and relocated to Monaco. Condition Report General light surface wear commensurate with age and use. An early 20th century pink sapphire five stone bar brooch, collet-set throughout with vari-cut pink sapphires, mounted in gold, together with a sapphire and enamel bow brooch, first length 8.5cm. £2,000-£3,000 --- According to a verbal report from GCS, the central pink sapphire is testing as Sri Lankan origin, with no indications of heating. Verbal report number 5784-0863. Condition Report The sapphires are a pale pink hue and well matched, with inclusions typical to the nature of the stone. The principal sapphire with some light zoning observed through the table. General light surface wear to the mounts and settings commensurate with age and use. Metals unmarked and untested. A star ruby and diamond cluster ring, the circular star ruby cabochon within a surround of brilliant-cut diamonds, total diamond weight approximately 1.20 carats, ring size N-O. £700-£900 --- Condition Report General light surface wear to the mount and settings commensurate with age and use. The ruby is an opaque, dark purple-pink hue, with faint six ray asterism observed under direct light. Angular colour zoning and surface reaching fissures also observed, as well as some light concentric abrasion to the side of the cabochon. The diamonds are bright and lively. Gross weight 10.1gm.

SHACKLETON-ROWETT EXPEDITION: An extremely rare group of eighteen signatures by various members of the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition 1921-22, together on an oblong 8vo bifolium page removed from an autograph album, comprising Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) Commander, died on South Georgia during the expedition; Frank Wild (1873-1939) Second-in-Command, took command of the expedition after Shackleton's death; Frank Worsley (1872-1943) Captain of RYS Quest; Alexander Kerr (1892-1964) Engineer; James McIlroy (1879-1968) Surgeon and meteorologist; Alexander Macklin (1889-1967) Surgeon who was also in charge of stores and equipment; Leonard Hussey (1891-1964) Meteorologist and assistant surgeon; Charles Green (1888-1974) Cook; Thomas McLeod (1869-1960) Able seaman; Roderick Carr (1891-1971) Pilot who assisted with scientific work; James Dell (c.1880-1968) Electician and Boatswain; Hubert Wilkins (1888-1958) Biologist; George Vibert Douglas (1892-1958) Geologist; James Marr (1902-1965) Boy Scout; Douglas Jeffrey (1885-1972) Navigator; C. E. Smith (?-?) Second Engineer; Harold Watts (?-?) Wireless Operator; and Eriksen (?-?) a Norwegian harpoon expert. All have signed with their names alone in various colours of fountain pen inks. Together with an original vintage sepia 3 x 2.5 photograph of several men on board a small boat, annotated in an unidentified hand to the verso, 'Sir Ernest Shackleton going ashore from R.Y.S. Quest' and dated Madeira, 16th October 1921. An exceptional and highly desirable collection of signatures including a number of individuals who had also been members of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17. Some light age wear and a few minor stains, VG, 2The Shackleton-Rowett Expedition of 1921-22 was Shackleton's last Antarctic project and marked the closing chapter in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Expedition. Proposed as an ambitious two-year programme of exploration, the expedition was curtailed with the death of Shackleton and the inadequacies of the RYS Quest. The crew of the ship comprised twenty-four members in all, but only nineteen were on board for the start of the Antarctic portion.

GUSTAV VI ADOLF: (1882-1973) King of Sweden 1950-73. A.L.S., Gustav Adolf, Crown Prince of Sweden, three pages, 8vo, Stockholm, 22nd January 1920, to [Lionel] Cust, on the Prince's blind embossed monogrammed stationery. The Prince writes concerning Gunnar Wengstrom, a member of staff at the National Museum in Stockholm, who will be going to England for two months to study paintings and drawings, and enquires 'Might I ask you to let him see the collection at Windsor Castle and would it be possible for you to help him to get a permit to see the collection at Chatsworth too?', further adding that he hopes it will not cause Cust too much trouble and explaining that Wengstrom will be travelling at the expense of the museum. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGLionel Cust (1859-1929) British art historian who served as director of the National Portrait Gallery 1895-1909 and as Surveyor of Pictures in Ordinary to the King from 1901-27.
