The final leaf has an explanation of the plates. The frontispiece was taken from Cesi's Apiarium, 1625, the first drawings of bees as seen through a compound microscope. "Thorley's secret was the puffball narcotic, which he used when uniting colonies; it's use was mentioned in 1597 by Gerard and had been long practised in the Netherlands." (1)

*Lewin (Frederic George, 1861-1933). A collection of original Charles Dickens artwork and ephemera, all illustrations for Pickwick Papers, produced for the textile manufacturer and supplier Sam Weller of Pickwick Works, Bradford, circa 1914 - 1962, containing 25 original pen and ink cartoon designs for advertising calendars, mostly signed, many with printer's annotations and corrections, and titled with quotations from Pickwick Papers, many card-mounted, each 40 x 28 cm (15.75 x 11ins) or similar, together with approximately 170 calendars (covering the years 1914-1961 with only three gaps), the majority hand-coloured, some corrected proofs, along with the printer's copy of an Everyman's Library edition of Pickwick Papers (with the calendar quotes listed and marked for each year at the front of the volume), also 11 hand-coloured cut-out lithographed figures from Pickwick Papers, each double-glazed, 26 x 13cm or similar, plus further related and duplicated items, including 13 framed colour lithograph prints of Lewi's illustrations to Pickwick Papers The humorous illustrator Frederick George Lewin worked for the Bristol Magpie and Bristol Evening Post and contributed to Punch magazine (1902-08). One of his main publishers was E.W. Savory Ltd. of Bristol, who produced these advertising calendars for the Yorkshire textile company Sam Weller, appropriately using characters from Pickwick Papers. Lewin was a member of the Royal West of England Academy and the Bristol Savage Club, and he wrote and illustrated Rhymes of Ye Olde Sign Boards (1911) and others. In 1912 Lewin provided the illustrations for Characters from Dickens. His light-hearted drawings of Dickensian characters also featured on cigarette cards and postcards. (3 cartons)
