Harold T Bengen (German 1879-1962) THREE HORSES IN A THUNDERSTORM signed oil on canvas 111 by 146cm Harold T Bengen was a German artist and teacher born in 1879. In 1910, together with Georg Tappert and Max Pechstein, he co-founded the German Secession artist's group. Bengen's work contains elements of Jugendstil, the German version of the popular Art Nouveau style of the period. Many of his works which date from the decade before the First World War employ the use of strong colours. The works produced during this time are seen as his most personal artworks. While the painting Three Horses in a Thunderstorm is not dated, we can deduce from several elements that this painting was produced by the artist in the 1920s. These elements include the vivid colour variation, the dark background, the dissecting diagonal elements of the composition, and the inclusion of the three horses, a subject matter that Bengen was drawn to at the time. While many of Bengen's later works were destroyed during the Second World War, most of the artist's earlier works, including those from the 1920s, survived as they had been stored in a cellar by his wife. After the death of their mother, Bengen's three daughters brought the remaining paintings to light.
