[Crimea]. Lucan (George Charles Bingham, Earl of). Original Letter of Appointment, signed by Sidney Herbert, M.P., Secretary of War, 1st April, 1854, addressed to Major General Lord Lucan, giving him Command of the Cavalry Division in the Crimea, under the command of General Lord Raglan, K.C.B., together with Lord Lucan's Warrant, 3rd May, 1854, on printed form WO475, empowering him to convene District Courts Martial, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Steele, Military Secretary, and endorsed by the signature of Lord Raglan, plus a letter in a clerical hand, from the Deputy Adjutant General's Office, 22nd August, 1854, relative to the deficiency in the issue of Extra Articles of Diet being charged to the public, with a brusque order, hand?written and signed by Lord Lucan, to the effect that Commanding Officers of the Cavalry Regiments read, sign and return it, further endorsed by General Lord William Paulet and five Commanding Officers, inc. Major J.T. Douglas Halkett, 4th Light Dragoons (the most senior Officer killed in the Charge of the Light Brigade), foolscap Sidney Herbert's mother was the sister of Prince Woronzoff, who owned the land on which the great battles of the Crimean War were fought. A late 19th Century French gilt brass three piece clock garniture, the clock with 3.75ins cast brass dial and enamelled numeral cartouches to the eight day two train movement striking on a bell, contained in ornate case surmounted by a cupola of classical form standing on an architectural pediment, with winged griffins masks to sides and bold lion's mask, leaf scroll ornament and turned pillars to front, 22.5ins high, and a pair of matching five light candelabra with leaf scroll branches, 25.5ins high
