1926 Austin 12/4 Windsor Saloon. Reg No: DK 19191922 was to prove an important year for the Austin Motor Company. Following a period of financial difficulties, which had come about largely due to their `single model` policy with the 20hp immediately after the Great War, 1922 was to see the introduction of the Austin 7 which was destined for phenomenal success, whilst the new 12hp model, which had made its debut late the previous year, was now in production and selling well.Based broadly upon the larger 20/4, the Austin 12 was to inherit that 20/4`s legendary reliability and strength. Initially available as a tourer, a new saloon-the `Windsor`-was to join the range in 1924. The 12 proved very popular being available with a variety of different styles of coachwork, supplied both from Austin themselves and independent coachbuilders. The longevity of this model was to become legendary and it has proved without question one of the hardest wearing motor cars of all time.First registered on the 21st of December 1926, this 12/4 Windsor is a very special vehicle indeed. The logbook shows only one previous owner in its 85 years-the last change was in the 1950`s when the Austin was bought by the now deceased owner who as a young man had to go through an interview by the then owner to judge his suitability before allowing him to purchase the car!The registration number DK 1919 is originalFor 40 years or so the car was kept in its original state, but in the late 1990`s it was decided that the Austin should be restored to as good as new condition. So between 1999 and 2002 the Austin was sent to world renowned restorers David A. C. Royle & Co Ltd of Darlington for a full, complete and sympathetic restoration-the work was overseen by the engineer owner who insisted on traditional materials and methods during the restoration.A record of the restoration including photographs and correspondence is with the car and it is believed in the region of £65,000 was spent. To include the original registration number DK 1919Condition report: Restored to as good as new in 2002-Has been stored in a heated garage ever since with only a handful of miles travelled ever since. Will require light re-commissioning after long term storage. Also, a quantity of Austin related memorabilia as well as service journals and repair sheets for this very car as well as further letters relating to it, which are on view in the upper saleroom.
