DIM. 94 X 122,5 CM (37 X 48.2 in.) This student of both the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and painter Félix Barrias represents one of the rare female Orientalist painters. She started her carrier painting scenes of European life, but today is better known for her Orientalist works that capture, with great tenderness, the daily life in North Africa. She became a member of both the Colonial Society of French Artists and the Salon of the Society of French Orientalist painters. Her works, along with other painters, also served as illustrations along the packaging of the famous biscuit company LU. Her celebrated painting Tahadat et Khadija (former collection of LU) was used as a publicity poster. Our important painting presents us with a meeting of two very different people; a young black man richly dressed visits with an older wise man. The old man - scribe, well known writer, or religious scholar - sits writing, visibly concentrated in his work. Books and an ink well rest upon a thick mat where he also sits. The interior is bare, yet it has an emanating light that appears almost supernatural. The entire atmosphere is impregnated with the wisdom and peace of this old man. The young boss, who appears seemingly impatient, carries a bitter expression. On his right hand he wears a gold bracelet, a symbol of a man used to giving orders. As a sign of respect, he has removed his shoes. The entire scene appears tainted in blue. Marie Lucas-Robiquet’s paints with small brushstrokes, using a reduced palette of enormous sensitivity. Here, nothing is violent; the old man fills this space with mysticism.
