Jeremy Gardiner Portland Stone, Anvil Point, Swanage, 2021 Acrylic and Jesmonite on Poplar Panel Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Jeremy Gardiner's artistic excavation of the geology of landscape is shaped both by human activity and by the forces of nature. His painting is informed by science, geomorphology, new technologies and direct physical engagement with ancient landscapes. Gardiner interprets, through his painting and printmaking, a variety of landscapes that contain the marks and secrets of their own distant formation, giving them a unique, contemporary depth and beauty. His artistic exploration has taken him from the Jurassic Coast of Dorset to the rugged coast of Cornwall, the Oceanic islands of Brazil, the arid beauty of the island of Milos in Greece and the Lake District and its numerous waterfalls. Gardiner's spatially probing and texturally explicit pictures creatively transform the lessons learnt from pioneering modern British landscape painters such as John Tunnard, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and the American artist Richard Diebenkorn. 'Gardiner's distinctive laminar landscapes reveal their layered meanings only over time - this is not instant art, but art which discloses itself gradually. Its richness matches the complexity of the world it seeks to evoke, and offers back an interpretation of it which is both personal and penetrating.' Andrew Lambirth, Art Critic Gardiner studied Fine Art at Newcastle University from 1975 -79 and painting at the Royal College of Art from 1980-83. He was a Harkness Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1984-86.Gardiner's monograph 'The Art of Jeremy Gardiner: Unfolding Landscape' was published by Lund Humphries in 2013 that year Gardiner was awarded the prestigious Discerning Eye ING Art prize for 'Pendeen Lighthouse', the first painting in a series that would evolve into Pillars of Light, his sellout exhibition which took place in September, 2016 at The Nine British Art, St James's, London. His paintings have been exhibited in Europe, the USA, South America, and Japan. He has won numerous awards throughout his career including a Churchill Fellowship and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Gardiner's paintings are represented in public and corporate collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Government Art Collection, BNP Paribas and Pincent Masons. His most recent exhibitions include Drawn to the Coast in 2017, and Tintagel to Lulworth in 2019. South by Southwest a recent touring museum exhibition was a journey to explore the modern-day reality of our coastline from Kent to Cornwall, looking afresh at the harbours, bays, coves, castles and follies that characterise the remarkable shoreline of the South Coast. The show was cut short by the pandemic in 2020, paintings from this body of work are on display at Linley Belgravia and The Nine British Art, St James's, London during summer 2021.The Nine British Art, 9 Bury Street, St James's, LondonMy work reflects a deep and long-term interest with the geology of landscape and how it is shaped by the forces of nature. In this piece, a study of the Purbeck limestone at Anvil Point my working method involves building accretions of paint on poplar panel and sanding them down, in an attempt to emulate on the surface of my paintings, the effects of geological time on the terrain. Landscape painting is thriving in the 21st Century, reasons may include our imminent environmental collapse and an increasingly digitally mediated existence. I believe if I can paint pictures that encompass an understanding of different landscapes their underlying structures, contours and unique history, then it is time well spent.

Sara Willett Beijing Sun i, 2021 Ink and Watercolour on Paper Signed on verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Painting, for me, is a way of balancing stillness with energy and movement. One of the things I find most fascinating about painting is the slowing down of time, and how the temporal register effects the work. The process I have developed consists of both systematic repetition and conscious intuition, creating detailed, multi-layered surfaces - the curvilinear shapes that emerge are never entirely predicted. Repetition of form, as in the natural environment, creates complex growth patterns and rhythms, allowing the pictorial space to act as a platform for transformation and evolution. The layers create visual tensions and a dialogue emerges between what is hidden and what is revealed. The results play with the stability of the viewing experience, creating complex illusions of depth that confuse the eye and trick the brain. The weeks I spent in the old industrial area of Beijing presented me with days of blue-skied autumnal beauty, but also days of heavy pollution when the city was bathed in crepuscular gloom. I became interested in the quality of light on these days; especially when the sun's rays struggled to break through the mists and at night when the air became a neon infused haze. The work began to respond to this visual phenomenon.

Pam Thorburn Holiday Romance, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Pam Thorburn is an artist living in Edinburgh Scotland who spent the first half of her life in Australia. Pam grew up in the outback in a landscape that is arid and flat with intense light, heat and colour, a landscape that is as harsh as it is beautiful. Now living in Scotland, Pam is immersed in a landscape that couldn't be more different: a landscape of mountains and rivers, lochs and moors, a land that can at times, be shrouded in soft mist and at other times have clear pure light; a landscape of subtle colour shifts. Pam came to painting late in life. For many years she has kept sketchbooks in which she draws and paints places she see on her travels and the areas around where she lives. These are realistic, albeit sketchy, representations of what she sees. Her paintings however, are different. Many are abstractions of what she senses and feels about a place, be it wilderness, urban or domestic, at the time or from fleeting memories and impressions. Pam's work is multi-layered, involving adding and subtracting paint, through scratching, scraping back and sanding. In some ways this reflects the history and impact of nature and people on place. Pam's process is one of play and experimentation, frequently starting with no intentions, until something starts to reveal itself. When this happens I she refines and hones the painting sometimes through the addition of marks using other media such as pencil, ink or pastels. Education Degree in Primary Education. About the postcard artworks   Pam followed her usual process of creating an art work by the application of paint randomly without a predetermined outcome. By adding paint, and wiping away parts, the art work evolves and becomes what it needs to be. 'Holiday Romance' is an abstract painting whereby the use of deep reds and purples symbolising passion together with the suggestion of script suggested the title 'Holiday Romance'. In 'Curtain Up' the squares represent the seating plan of the auditorium while the scallops suggests the swags of theatre curtains and there are also various spotlights to be seen. 'The Black Bowl' came about through an exploration of shapes until the bowl took centre stage. 'Summer Bouquet' started with a playful application of warms colours, followed by covering parts and carving out the shape of the vase and blooms with white paint. These shapes were then refined into the flowers and foliage was added.

Lottie Cole Little Fire Place, 2021 Watercolour on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Cole's paintings reflect her interest in Art History, provenance and the role women have played in both. She regularly looks to women artists & collectors of the past for affirmation, guidance and inspiration. She paints homes, not least because they are a realm of women, an area unlike most others where they are authored by women. Though people are rarely seen in her paintings, she believes the domestic interior contains considerable biography & human emotion from grief to celebration seen through the objects on the mantlepiece or the paintings on the wall. Cole began a Foundation at Wimbledon Art School and went on to study Art History at St Andrews University. She enjoys reading a picture, and as such likes her work to operate on different levels - the first simply an interior - the second the decoding of allusions and objects. While there is an obvious preoccupation with content in the pictures focus is given to the emotional impact of colour and physicality of paint. Cole works equally in oils as well as gouache & watercolour as they convey light and mass so readily. In 2019 she set up Minerva Workshop, in London which organises talented artists from up and down the country to give workshops and masterclasses. She also runs a weekly art group. In 2021 she was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society.   Exhibitions 2021 London Art Fair with Long & Ryle 2020 ING Discerning Eye Sunday Times Watercolour Competition Royal Watercolour Society Contemporary Watercolour Competition 2019 Selection of Work at Ainscough Gallery and Cricket Fine Art London & Hungerford, McAllister Thomas Godalming One the Square at Zimmer Stewart, Arundel - The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition Exhibition & Tour -March 8-20 Royal Watercolour Society Contemporary Watercolour Competition 2018 One the Square showcase, Forest Row, RH18 - The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition Exhibition & Tour - 'The Tetrarch & Other Stories' Cricket Fine Art - 'Recalled: Poetry & The London Library' London Review of Books Cafe

Luke Elwes Spring, 2021 Mixed Media on Paper Signed on verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Luke Elwes was born in London (1961) and spent his early years in Iran, where the light and space of the desert were a formative influence. Luke Elwes' paintings are meditations on our place in the world. They often refer to particular journeys and to the passing of time. Education He holds degrees from Bristol University (1983) and UAL (Camberwell school of Art 1985), and completed his Masters in Art History at London University (Birkbeck) in 2007. Following a spell working at Christie's he began to travel and write, and after meeting Bruce Chatwin in 1987 he went to the central Australian desert to explore the landscape and its use in indigenous storytelling and artforms. Since then he has continued to travel extensively, discovering and revisiting remote locations in India, Asia and North Africa. In 1998 he was artist in residence on an expedition to Mount Kailash, a holy mountain in western Tibet. Since 2000 he has worked for extensive periods on an island off the East Coast of the UK. In 2013 he was awarded a grant to study at the Vermont Studio Center and in 2015 he was resident artist at the Albers Foundation (USA). The idea of a journey is central to his painting, both its physical and temporal unfolding and its recollection in memory. The surfaces recall maps, tracing the marks of history and the fragile signs of belief, and moving between what is revealed and concealed of these often empty and distant terrains. Rooted in the particular, the images also probe an interior space. The art critic Andrew Lambirth has written about them: 'The map is nearly erased, a distressed palimpsest; it is difficult to decipher a single clear meaning. The viewer must, like a scryer, read the signs and interpret accordingly'. More recently the writer Robert Macfarlane has described how 'they hover between encryption and archetype, enigma and fabulous openness' Exhibitions Since 1990 his work has been exhibited in the following galleries: Frestonian Gallery (London), Adam Gallery (London), Broadbent (London), Art First Contemporary (London), Browse & Darby (London), Art First (New York), Galerie Vieille du Temple (Paris), Galerie Marceau Bastille (Paris), Grand Palais (Paris), Palazzo Lanfranchi (Pisa), Galleria Ceribelli (Milan & Bergamo), Galleria Ghelfi (Vicenza). He has participated in shows at the following UK institutions: Royal Academy London, Christies London, Barbican Gallery London, National Trust, Estorick Collection London, Kettles Yard Cambridge, Southampton Art Gallery, Bury Art Gallery Manchester, Young Gallery Salisbury, Minories Colchester. He has also written about contemporary art for journals including Modern Painters, Royal Academy Magazine, Galleries Magazine, Abstract Critical and other digital platforms. In 2011 he was invited to give an 'Artist's Eye' talk at the National Gallery.

Oriele Steiner Spec of Dust, 2021 Gouache on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Oriele's work explores a wide array of painting techniques and processes, using colour and light as the dominant means of experimentation. She is interested in a palette's ability to evoke emotion, whether through direct, singular use or via juxtaposition and dissonance. Her compositions portray vivid dreamscapes, and the figures within offer a sense of eeriness. The figures themselves often make their way in to her direct environment via found photography, imagination and drawings. Organic forms taken from this imagery transform themselves in to a range of motifs, which dominate her work. These motifs are her way of building up a relationship with the imagery, and she continually builds upon this visual alphabet through uninhibited, free-associative drawing and painting. This results in a childlike quality that represents immediate, impulsive thoughts. Timothy Gatenby Fake Charizard, 2021 Oil on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Timothy Gatenby is a contemporary British figurative artist who nostalgically paints modern imagery such as motorways and pop culture with a traditional Old Master approach. Through his limited palette and a ghostly distortion of imagery a sense of foreboding lurks behind the softly executed painting surface in Gatenby's world. His work has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of Art, Mall galleries and Birmingham Society of Artists. In recent years Gatenby's work has been selected for the Columbia Threadneedle Prize Exhibition (2018), Royal Society of British Artists (2018), the New English Art's Club (2014), BP Portrait Prize (2012) and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2019, 2012) Gatenby's paintings feature nostalgic characters from 90s television, rendered with a painterly quality more associated with the esteem of Fine Art than the amusement of light entertainment. Familiar characters, usually known for being brightly colored and fun, are depicted in washed-out hues; their smooth cartoon-like surfaces represented as textured and greyed. The usually jovial characters of popular television are stripped of their bright, happy personalities and on them, something much more sinister is superimposed. There is a sense that these characters from happy childhood memories have been lost to the passage of time; that history has forgotten them, that they have been brushed aside in the wake of newer incarnations of characters for popular amusement; washed up at the banks of the mainstream of entertainment, becoming just an afterthought no longer foregrounded, except in these paintings. The same dynamic underlies Gatenby's motorway paintings, which take the often disparaged aesthetics of concrete and tarmac from some of Britain's major roads, and sets them as the atmosphere of landscape paintings that hint at the classical discipline which they reappropriate for a brutalist, modern setting. All the while, throughout the various styles and themes that Gatenby explores, small idiosyncratic moments crop up, where, as if for his own amusement as much as anybody else's, a joke or a pun is given expression through a depicted object seen out of place, or an expectation subverted by an oddity, giving the work a touch of the absurd, since the emotional thread spun on the notion of disgraced and forgotten figures of childhood television 'and the depressing vision obscured by petrol exhaust fumes on the highways and byways of life' becomes an irony. The works thereby achieve a certain circularity of meaning, by which a tragi-comic interpretation can be pursued as far as one wishes to take it. The forgotten characters are not forgotten after all, but return under a different guise.

Paul Treasure Vole, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Paul Treasure, an artist known for his stunning paintings, was born in 1961 in Gloucestershire and studied at Cheltenham College of Art. He then moved to London where he worked from his studio in Holborn as an established and highly regarded artist, taking on commissions for public works of art worldwide as well as for private clients. In 1991 he took a year's sabbatical to paint whilst travelling the world. This journey took him through Africa, India, Southeast Asia and Central America. On his return he moved to Hampshire where he had several solo sell-out shows exhibiting these works. Following this, in 1993, he was commissioned to be expedition artist on the first ever crossing of the Taklamakan Desert in Northwest China for three months, after which he exhibited these works at various shows, including the Royal Geographical Society in London. Paul Treasure's art style is expressive, energetic and full of colour. His works capture the feeling and emotion of a place, whilst depicting the interplay between light, land, water and sky. His dramatic interpretations of the English landscape show his response to the ever-changing seasons, weather and light; and his bold use of palette knife, brush strokes and mixed media result in distinctive mark-making, culminating in vigorous, textured landscapes. He continues to exhibit around the country whilst still travelling abroad regularly to find inspiration for his paintings.

Uthman Wahaab Untitled Charcoal on Paper Signed on front 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) The multidisciplinary artist Uthman Wahaab was born in 1983 in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria and grew up in Lagos. Wahaab is an artist who possesses an overarching interest in social phenomenon and eschews a consistent use of medium or even singular aesthetic style. Utilising the disciplines of drawing, painting, graphic design, film, photography, sculpture and installation, Wahaab's foremost concern is developing a new visual language that consciously rejects traditional forms of depiction in order to document ongoing history and unfolding reality. Wahaab's current work focuses on issues of identity, beauty, sexuality, and cultural influences that inform technological change and social shifts in Africa. To move forward in a globalised world, carefully examining the past and learning from historical lessons are of the utmost importance. The artist is truly committed to giving back to the community by exercising artistic agency to shed light on difficult and often tenuous political, economic, and social dynamics. The artist's work provides a critical lens on social phenomenon not only within Africa, but more significantly looks at the ways that globalism and post-colonialism complicate the African socials-cape.   Studied Fine Art at The School Of Art, Design and Printing Yaba College of Technology, Lagos Nigeria. Inspired by an encounter with a woman with larger than normal stature and the extreme anxiety she felt about facing the world, The series is a nod to the Fattening Room tradition in Nigeria that contradicts western-centric standards of beauty and sensuality and a reflection to Freudian theories of female vanity, suppression, and alleged sexual inferiority. It aims to appropriate these conventions by emphasizing the under-appreciated beauty that exists in the curves and contours of voluptuous female figures and to celebrate the female form as an awe inspiring, powerful object that may exist independently of sensuality. My figures serve a different purpose than the classical tradition. The portrayal of bodies in these works also suggests a certain disinterest in Western imposition of beauty ideals on African women and society.

Robert Soden Roland and Tuplis, 2021 Watercolour and Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) An established landscape painter, Robert Soden's interest in architecture and urban life began when he lived and worked in Rome in the early 1980s. He has spent much of the last twenty five years recording the changes to the City of Sunderland as it has undergone substantial redevelopment. He sees his work as a continuation of the topographical tradition of Girtin, Cotman and Turner. Soden focuses on the human element of architecture, describing where and how people carry out their lives, in prominent sites as well as less well-documented areas. Soden often uses weather and light as metaphors for the politics of change. The paintings are all made outside in front of the motif and as a result have the veracity of the lived experience.

Mary Burtenshaw Windswept Skies, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) I paint dramatic impressionist and abstract landscapes which are inspired by my love of the countryside and the many and varied places I have visited, creating the atmosphere and feeling of a place with the use of texture and light. My love of the countryside and how it varies in form at different times of the day depending on the light, and how the contours and colours change continuously is an inspiration to me. I see a landscape as evocative, a place that can provide memories but where we can all interpret something different even looking at the same scene. I try to depict the sense of space and mood in something so vast. My pastel landscapes are painted on watercolour paper which gives an intensity of colour and a strong texture but also a soft contour. The technique uses layers of pastel to recreate the form and depth. My acrylics are painted on paper, canvas or wood panel which all give their own different textures and I use various sizes of brushes to create a more abstract and spontaneous finish. Much like the pastels there are many layers involved especially when painting the more impressionist style. All my paintings convey an emotion that each landscape is unique and locked into an interpretive 'one moment in time'. Each one is intended to be viewed as if you are there and is something we can identify with, or perhaps as if we have all been there before. I usually paint on large stretch canvas or on medium size board, paper or canvas sheets so painting on a smaller scale presented a real challenge as I was worried that the spontaneity and fluidity of movement required for blending and texture would be diminished. However, I was really pleased that the fluidity was still possible to achieve the colour, depth and tone and I could still be inspired by my love of the countryside to paint at this much smaller size.

Fred Coppin A Very Small Cactus, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on front and verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Fred Coppin captures an eternal sense of optimism in his work through a distinctive combination of amplified colour and playful forms, in which he exaggerates the world into a permanently dream-like state that allows us, as viewers, to linger in a moment of utopian calm. Coppin's paintings are tied together by an uplifting impulse to dissect, exaggerate and reassemble the world around us into its most hopeful state. Light and colour play a significant role in Coppin's work. This stems from his interest in photography and, more deeply, the emotional and aesthetic power of sunlight. Light is indicative of the positivity Coppin tries to convey and the way light operates in straight lines draws back to his interest in geometric design. Coppin's calming motifs and refinement of complex images into simple shape and colour, treads a careful balance between energy and quietness. He aspires to find new ways of simplifying core elements of the world around him, creating methods and codes to transform all of the details of life; the sound, the feeling, the weather, even the conversations, into a painting. There is invariably light in Fred's paintings, both literally and metaphorically. The places he paints, while being palpable, embody a sense of the exotic, and an element of the fantastical, they are like the meeting place between fantasy and reality. Fred graduated from Oxford Brookes University School of Arts with a fine arts degree. After graduating, Fred developed a career in brand marketing before turning full-time to fine art painting. In 2018 he was selected for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, winning The Artist Magazine Award. In 2019 his self-portrait was selected for the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize exhibition at Piano Nobile Kings Place, as well as a painting shown in the 2019 artsdepot Open.

Kate Dunn Don Dada, 2021 Spray Paint and Oil Bar on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Kate Dunn makes work pulling on themes of renaissance, rave, light and sacred space, to create varying environments of worship. Since 2018 she has used structures reminiscent of the altar to discuss the internal archive one experiences when faced with such a shape. Recently she moved into multi-sensory experience as a means to address her concern with the potential to be passive in the age of information overload. Kate uses sight-specific installation and UV reactive materials to manipulate the display of her paintings and create a confrontation with the viewer. In June 2021 she has a solo show, THE TABERNACLE at TJ Boulting and a two-person show, FUGUE with Robert Cooper at The Tub, London. Kate Dunn (Edgware, UK, 1993) is a London based artist. She has studied at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, The Florence Academy of Art and City & Guilds of London Art School, where she is now a tutor.   2021 THE TABERNACLE, welcome to pharmakon (solo), TJ Boulting, UK 2021 FUGUE: Robert Cooper x Kate Dunn, The Tub, UK 2020SKIN OF LIGHT (solo), SET Alscot Rd, UK 2020when shit hits the fan, GUTS Gallery, Online 2020The House We Built, London, UK 2019The Discerning Eye Exhibition, Mall Galleries, UK 2019Seen or Seeing, Bethnal Green Railway Arches, UK 2018 Contemporary British Painting Prize, Huddersfield Art Gallery, & Menier Gallery, UK 2018 Great Women Artists x Palazzo Monti Residency, Italy 2018 MA Fine Art Show, City and Guilds of London Art School, UK 2018Interim, City and Guilds of London Art School, UK 2017The Great Women Artists Exhibition, Mother London, UK 2017 The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize, Piano Nobile Kings Place, UK 2016 The Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, UKN/A   About the Postcards Through drawing I have been looking into the aesthetics of digital intimacy and digital touch over the past year. What does it feel like to exist intimately in a digital state, how do colour and expression equate through such a medium, and what does this look like when returned to the physicality of the studio. The colours steal from the oversaturation of the screen. The marks imitate those left by our fingers after a session of scrolling. The works question how relationships manifest spatially in this realm; how close or communicative can we be within the formally constructed programs of the digital age. When plugged in how do we burst, scream, hum or do we simply sit static. The works draw their titles from the music listened to around the time of making; they are a continuation of the conversation that began during the creation of FUGUE, a two-person show opening in June with Robert Cooper at The Tub, London.

Josie Clouting Collecting Colours II, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Josie immerses herself in the landscape, from man made cultivated botanic gardens to wild stormy beaches and the rolling hills where she lives. Her paintings are intuitive, emotional responses to her natural environment, inspired by the vastness and wonder of the natural world.
