LAUREL STAN (1890-1965) & HARDY OLIVER (1892-1957) English and American Film Comedians. Vintage signed postcard photograph by both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy individually, the image depicting the duo in a characteristic half length pose wearing their bowler hats. Signed by each with their names alone to the clear background. Hardy`s signature is very slightly light to a few letters, although perfectly legible. Neatly mounted and matted in white, framed and glazed in a plain black frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 13.5. VG

HAY WILL: (1888-1949) English Comedian. Early A.L.S., Will Hay, two pages, 8vo, London, 14th December 1918, to Mr and Mrs Davis. Hay states that he is `up to the eyes in rehearsing for the new show` and informs his correspondents that he has not heard any word from an agent about them, so has written again. He continues to ask for some of their memos when they are printed. Some light overall creasing and a split to one fold, just affecting the text but not signature. G Hay was, at the time of this letter, rehearsing for a Fred Karno production called Moonstruck which was due to open at Colchester Hippodrome on 23rd December.

He stands before a Wanted for Murder poster in a scene from the 1935 film The Informer. Signed in black ink across a light area at the head of the image, `To Mary O`Shea, with my very best wishes from Victor McLaglen`. It was for his role in this film that McLaglen won his Best Actor Oscar. Rare, particularly so in this form. VG

FORD JOHN: (1894-1973) American Film Director, Academy Award winner. Good A.L.S. with his nickname Pappy, two pages, 8vo, Dublin, n.d. (1952), to Meta, on the printed stationery of the Shelbourne Hotel. Ford announces `Well at last if you won`t write me, I turn the other cheek & have yr. boy friend Ernie write you. We`re having dinner together-kicking the gong around.` and continues to comment on his work in Ireland, `Start shooting "weather permitting" next week. Have a helluva good cast. The only malcontents-Barry-(Fitzgerald) whom we told to go & f**k himself & girlfriend Madame Eileen Crowe-both asked salaries greatly over their British rates-fine Irish sentiment-likewise Mr. Shields.` In concluding Ford asks for a copy of a book and a Searchers article. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a couple of small water stains, just affecting three words of text (although still legible) but not the signature. A rare letter of fine content. About VG John Ford was in Ireland to direct the film The Quiet Man (1952) starring John Wayne and Maureen O`Hara. In the letter he refers to Barry Fitzgerald (Michaleen Oge Flynn), Eileen Crowe (Mrs. Elizabeth Playfair) and Arthur Shields (Reverend Cyril Playfair). The Quiet Man was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two, including a Best Director Oscar for John Ford.

WAYNE JOHN: (1907-1979) American Actor, Academy Award winner. D.S., John Wayne, one page, 4to, Los Angeles, California, 21st January 1963. The confidential printed document is issued by the Directors Guild of America Inc. and states, in part, `Membership dues are computed at 1% of gross earnings....with minimum dues of $100 and maximum of $1000 annually. If your income exceeds $100,000 you need not report actual figures but may list MAXIMUM if you wish to do so.` Wayne confirms his gross earnings for 1962 as $100,000 and also estimates his earnings for 1963 to be None. Some light creasing and a few small tears to the edges and some small areas of paper loss to the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature. G

KERN JEROME: (1885-1945) American Composer. Attractive A.M.Q.S., Jerome Kern, on a 12mo card, n.p., November 1931. In bold, dark fountain pen ink the composer has penned three bars of music which he identifies as being from The Cat and the Fiddle. Boldly signed and dated immediately beneath the quotation. Some very light, minor overall age toning, otherwise VG The original Broadway production of The Cat and the Fiddle opened at the Globe Theatre on 15th October 1931, just one month before Kern penned the quotation. The musical, with lyrics by Otto Harbach, features the song She Didn`t Say Yes.

[ROLLING STONES THE]: A scarce original unsigned colour 25 x 12 slick for the British 1968 Beggar`s Banquet album cover, designed by Mick Jagger and with a graffiti theme. This design was not accepted by the band`s record label, Decca, and after a two month period of wrangling between the Rolling Stones and the record company, the band conceded ground and the album was released with it`s more familiar invitation design. This original slick was previously the property of the music critic Ralph Gleason. Accompanied by a letter of provenance and copies of letters to Gleason. WREN CHRISTOPHER: (1632-1723) English Architect. D.S., Chr. Wren, one page, small folio, n.p. (London?), 24th October 1693. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a bill of payment for the sum of £50, being six months interest on monies advanced by `An Act for Granting to Their Majesties, a Subsidy of Tonnage and Poundage, and other Sums of Money payable upon Merchandizes Exported and Imported`. Boldly signed by Wren in the right margin. Rare. Some light age wear and minor staining to the horizontal central fold, not affecting Wren`s signature. An attractive signed document. About VG The document most probably relates to the expenditure on Wren`s work on the façade of Hampton Court Palace, 1689-94.

UTRILLO MAURICE: (1883-1955) French Painter. Bold blue fountain pen ink signature (`Maurice Utrillo V.`) and inscription, in French, to a clear area at the head of a picture postcard of Montmartre, Paris. Utrillo has again signed his name in blue fountain pen ink to the verso, adding several additional lines of text in his hand, in French, `Garland of pretty flowers, Golden yellow butterflies, Pink ribbon on the back.`Some very light, minor age wear, about VG Utrillo is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who was actually born there.

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish Painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. Bold blue fountain pen ink signature (`Picasso`) on the verso of a picture postcard showing the port at Golfe-Juan. Picasso`s signature appears beneath that of his son Paulo Picasso, who has added a brief greeting (`Amities de Golfe-Juan`) in his hand, as well as the place and date, Golfe-Juan, 15th August 1946. Paulo has also addressed the postcard in his hand to Monsieur et Madame Gustave Sassier in Paris. Some light age wear, about VG Paulo Picasso (1921-1975) was the artist`s first child by his first wife Olga Khokhlova. Paulo was a dissolute motorcycle racer and chauffeur to his father. Picasso added his signature to his son`s greeting exactly nine months to the day before his second son, Claude, was born on 15th May 1947. Claude`s mother, Francoise Gilot, the lover and artistic muse of Picasso from 1944-53, had accompanied the artist to Golfe-Juan in August 1946 when she recounted that Picasso passed the mornings `basking like a lizard in the sun on the sand`.

Signed and inscribed colour 5 x 7 photograph of Kurtzman standing in a half length pose before one of his own cartoons. The artist has drawn a speech bubble with the words Phew! Who drew that!? and signed his name (in typical fashion H. Kurtz with an additional stick figure of a man) in black ink to a light area at the base of the image; Will Elder (1921-2008) American Illustrator and comic book artist. Illustrated A.L.S., Will Elder, one page, 8vo, Englewood, New Jersey, 25th October 1980, to Lois Burch, in full `Your poem was an egos delight, it obliged me this to write, at your behest and my behalf, the subject I love best-my autograph!` At the base of the letter Elder has drawn a colour head and shoulders sketch of Annie Fanny; Jerry DeFuccio (1925-2001) American comic book writer. T.L.S., Jerry, one page, 4to, Madison Avenue, New York, 14th February 1968, to Jim, on the colour printed stationery of Mad. DeFuccio writes to his friend, commenting on his own collection of original comic artwork and the recent additions he has made, but also commenting on work for the magazine, `We`ve had a big shot in the arm recently with artist/writer Jack Kent breaking into the ranks with very charming material. You`ll see his "Sex Education In the Schools" in a forthcoming issue. Bob Molyneux sent Kent to us. Actually, Kent had hit us with some submissions ten years ago, about the time of the demise of his "King Aroo" strip, and went away discouraged. All the stuff in the covers-ideas folder is very flat. We`ve picked through it time and again. We had to key our next cover on the "Balmy & Clod" (Bonnie & Clyde) parody inside the issue.` VG, 3

Dickens thanks his correspondent for their obliging letter and accompanying little book, explaining that he should have written before (`Do me the justice to believe that I should have done so sooner…`) but has only just returned home. With blank integral leaf. Some light overall age wear and minor staining, just affecting two words of text but not the signature. About G Robert Melrose (?1828-1898) Scottish Labourer, employed by the Hudson`s Bay Co. on Vancouver Island. The book to which Dickens refers is one which Melrose published himself entitled Diary of Robert Melrose, Royal Emigrant`s Almanack concerning Five Years Servitude under the Hudson`s Bay Company on Vancouver Island.

Beckett thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks `It is better that I do not attend your rehearsals` and continues to explain, `Regrettably, I know that I tend to react badly and would be a nuisance to everyone. Milne states the he suggested Herbert`s name to the editor of The Outlook and provides his correspondent with the address to arrange a meeting, commenting `Anyway, if your difficulty at present is to find editors rather than ideas, you might try him with a contribution, prose or verse`. Milne continues `My wife and I are great admirers of you in Punch, and when she becomes too admiring I remind her that it was I who first discovered you when you were still at school. In bold, dark fountain pen ink, Chesterton pens a quotation from Napoleon Bonaparte, ‘All European Wars are Civil Wars’. Together with Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) English Novelist. Autograph statement signed, Arnold Bennett, one page, oblong folio, n.p., n.d. Bennett writes, in full, ‘Peace is a natural state of man. War is not. The first principle of the universe not only should be, but is, harmony.’ Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG to EX, 2 Chesterton and Bennett prepared the statements for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.

LEONCAVALLO RUGGERO: (1857-1919) Italian Composer. An excellent signed and inscribed sepia cabinet photograph depicting the composer standing in a three quarter length pose. Photograph by Atelier Langhans of Marienbad. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image, with an inscription in German and French, `A mein liber Freund Heinrich Grunfeld, Souvenir de bonne et loyale amitie, R. Leoncavallo` Dated in the composer`s hand Marienbad, 17th July 1894. To a light area of the background at the right of the image Leoncavallo has boldly penned a musical quotation of two bars which he identifies as being from Bajazzo (the German name of Pagliacci, the quotation being for cello from Pagliacci`s aria Vesta la Giubba, sung by Canio at the close of the first act). A fine signed portrait, enhanced with a musical quotation from the composer`s most famous opera, and with an interesting association. Very slightly, neatly trimmed to the edges, just affecting the photographer`s mount and not the image or signature, otherwise VG Heinrich Grunfeld (1855-1931) Bohemian-Austrian Violoncellist, appointed court violoncellist to King William of Prussia in 1866.

[ELGAR EDWARD]: (1857-1934) English Composer. ELGAR CAROLINE ALICE (1848-1920) English Author, wife of Edward Elgar. Series of 32 A.Ls.S., C. A. Elgar, and a couple signed with initials C. A. E., also including a few unsigned notes or incomplete letters, seventy five pages (total), 4to and 8vo, Brinkwells, Fittleworth, Sussex, May-December 1918, to Mrs. Wright, the Elgar`s housekeeper at Severn House in Hampstead. Elgar writes to her housekeeper regarding various domestic matters, asking for furnaces to be lit and hot water bottles prepared for their return to London, enquiring whether the gardener has attended to the grapes, advising her of a delivery of wood and giving instructions on where it is to be stored, also congratulating her and her husband on the birth of their child, and in some letters also makes reference to her husband, in part, `Could you find some stockings of Sir Edward`s & post them to me. I think there are 2 or 3 pairs, & he wears them so much here, I did not bring enough...` (undated note, unsigned), `The police want a list of missing things-I had no time to examine suits in Sir E`s wardrobe. Would it be giving you or Mr. Wright too much trouble to send me a list of coats & trousers &c wh. are on the shelves. Then I cd. say what is gone....I left the room as I found it in case a detective shd. want to see it` (undated note, unsigned), `Sir Edward wants to have the piano now in the drawing room sent down here` (n.d.), `I am glad to say the piano arrived all safely this morning & the men managed to get it across the garden into the studio & Sir Edward has been playing some lovely things already.` (n.d.), `Sir Edward much wants some more music paper as soon as possible. Would you kindly get it for him from Severn House & post it....The paper is on the seat at the end of the billiard room...Sir E. wd. like about 30 sheets...` (8th December 1918). Some light age wear, generally G, 32 Edward Elgar worked on his Quintet in A minor for Piano and String Quartet Op.84, and two other major pieces of chamber music during the summer of 1918 while staying at Fittleworth. The composer`s biographer, W. H. Reed, considered that all three were `influenced by the quiet and peaceful surroundings during that wonderful summer.`

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH: (1872-1958) English Composer. T.L.S., R Vaughan Williams, one page, 8vo, Dorking, Surrey, 18th October 1950, to Ernest Irving, (`Dear Irving & Tom Cobley & all`). The brief form letter thanks Irving for his kind greetings and continues `I think it is wonderful that you should take the trouble to remember my birthday.` Some tears and light creasing at the edges, not affecting the text or signature. Together with a printed invitation card issued to Ernest Irving and Una Bart, inviting them to celebrate Vaughan Williams` birthday at the Martineau Hall, Dorking, on 11th October 1952 following a concert. FR Ernest Irving (1878-1953) English Composer and Conductor, remembered for his film scores which included Whisky Galore! and Turned Out Nice Again. Vaughan Williams dedicated his Sinfonia Antarctica to Irving.
