Betsy Blair played the role of Agnes Webster in the film adaptation, and at the time Gene was negotiating the leading role of Sweeney in the Trees. Kelly was a friend and admirer of Saroyan, describing him as "a big bruiser, as regular as they come, and looks like a contended iceman".
