A brass ship's type bell, inscribed 'Yellow Duke Esq. 1860', set in a shaped brass bracket and mounted on a wood plaque, 27cm high. The origins of the inscription are uncertain although it is believed that this bell, and others like it, were made to order. The following extract from The Mechanics Magazine, 13 January 1871, may shed some light: 'Another potentate of ebony hue ordered a number of polished ship bells in elegant brass frames and mounted on mahogany stands, engraved with the assumed name of the sable prince "Yellow Duke, Esq." The number of workpeople directly engaged in this branch of Birmingham industry is estimated at about 250, and the increasing use of bells, both for outdoor and indoor purposes, promises to augment this number at no distant date.'The Journal of the Society of Arts 1866 indicates that 'Yellow Duke Esq' was one of several 'African princes' to order such bells and that he lived in Calabar, Nigeria. He is noted for acting as a guide to the missionary Alexander Ross during his 1877 Expedition. He is described as a major palm-oil trader with connections with the Archibong family and a base at Odobo. To this end, he is mentioned in the diaries of William and Louisa Anderson:"Saturday, April 12 (1862, Calabar).—Great fire in town this afternoon. The premises of one of the principal native traders, Yellow Duke, including an excellent European house, barely finished, if indeed fully finished; the premises of the late King Duke, and adjoining tenements, were in about two hours burned to the ground.Sabbath, 13 (1862, Calabar).—Usual meetings to-day, and usual attendance. No gentlemen present, however. I went to the king's after service, and found them all sitting condoling with Yellow Duke. They appeared all very sober (in our Scottish sense of the word) on account of yesterday's calamity. I told them that I well knew what Yellow Duke was at that moment feeling, for, as they all knew, my house had at one time been consumed by fire. I spoke to them briefly in reference to the event. The substance of the remarks may be scripturally Englished thus: "Hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it."However, an earlier reference taken from trading letters in 1853 describes him as a 'Duke Town Slave' (Latham, A. J. H. Old Calabar, 1600–1891: The Impact of the International Economy upon a Traditional Society. London: Clarendon Press, 1973).Bell diameter - 16.5cm. The base - is 30cm X 21.5cmHeight approx. 25cm

§ PETER HOWSON O.B.E. (SCOTTISH 1958-) TRONGATE Signed, oil on canvasDimensions:121cm x 90.5cm (47.5in x 35.5in)Note: Note: Peter Howson’s Trongate is a striking and eloquent example of his career-long exploration of contemporary masculinity, both toxic and misunderstood [and often a combination of both]. The central figure of this work, life-size and dominating the canvas, takes up a classic boxer’s pose, as if modelling for an early edition of the Queensberry Rules, yet his clothing defines him as a bareknuckle fighter. There is no doubt what side of the tracks this man is from, although Howson reinforces this with the street scene behind, a dark and dirty canal pushing him to the edge, the wealthy city of office blocks and church spires beyond. Trongate is an area of central Glasgow, and like all of Howson’s subjects they are people close to him, specific to his milieu. Yet equally this man could be anywhere, in any tough city. Our boxer is lit with an almost supernatural glow, an actor on a stage, his surroundings more a backdrop. He is of the city, but in this particular moment, seems to stand outside it. In the sky there are two points of similar bright light – the moon and the North Star, lending this work an air of mystery, an unspoken narrative twist, a meditation, perhaps, on action and destiny.
