Employed by the Guinea Gold Coast Mining Company and despite Foreign Office warnings against, Burton, along with surveyor Cameron set off for the Kong Mountains to search for gold. They duly discovered gold and other mineral deposits but were forced to return to England and forfeit all rights to any mining activities there. (2)
