Lot No: 40 - Ref No: 026 Future Guardians By Vanessa Worrall - Halt Studios ''The inspiration behind this piece is the natural beauty of Dartmoor. The sculpture highlights the flora, fauna and some of the endangered species within Dartmoor, Barbastelle Bats, Blue Ground Beetle, Marsh Fritillary Butterflies. It is to remind future generations the importance of looking after the environment and local habitat. The sun sets on the proud mother otter protecting her pup and looking towards the future. Dawn breaks on the pup and with it comes new beginnings and a new generation to protect Dartmoor life. This sculpture is a wonderful project to be part of and I hope it brings many visitors the same joy I experienced when painting it.'' Vanessa Worrall paints at Halt Studios situated at her home within the Blackdown Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Inspired by land and seascape, Vanessa's oil paintings respond to the balance of light between day and night, the silhouettes, textures and colours of her locality are a constant inspiration. Vanessa's work has been shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Show, London 2020 and she also exhibits her work locally at Talent Gallery, Wellington, Somerset.
Lot No: 74 - Ref No: 070 Stargazy and Summer Hazy By John Vachon My design idea was to have scenes of the National Park at night as well as in the daytime. I wanted a view of Dartmoor at night to promote it as a place to go stargazing. The low light pollution on the moors makes it a perfect place to view the stars and planets. Dartmoor National Park is a varied landscape from farmland, moor, woods and grassland. To get inspired I visited many parts of the National Park but my favourite view is from Sharp Tor above the woods of the Dart Valley. Seeing the river winding through the steep tree covered valley far into the distance is an amazing sight. The end result is a composite of places merged together. The tor is Sharp Tor, the trees next to the tor are from Bellever Forest, the river is the Dart and the trees beside that are near Dartmeet.
Lot No: 45 - Ref No: 033 Two Frozen Otters By Jessica Storrs The invite to apply for the Otter Trail caught my eye on social media, and I thought it might be something fun to do over the dark winter months. I asked my 4-year-old daughter what I should paint the otter; Elsa! Her obsession of Frozen has no limits. As its two otters, obviously Anna had to join in, to my daughter's delight. My design is light-hearted and aims to put a smile on children's faces but potentially reminding traumatised parents of repetitive singing, but hopefully they will ''Let it go''. Personally, I am a big Disney fan and love animation, and this film especially remind me of my childhood in Sweden. I wanted to capture the beauty of snow in my design, especially how sunlight reflects and makes it glitter. I used spray paints as a base and used acrylic paint for all the details, it was an enjoyable experience and a form of relaxation in between childcare and work. I am a hobby artist working from my kitchen table, and my professional life is spent as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS; rehabilitating elderly people on an acute care ward.
Lot No: 58 - Ref No: 049 Whist Hounds of Dartmoor By Jose G Kenyon 'The inspiration for my Moor Otter was to create a atmospheric piece that reflected some of the lore local to the moors. Drawing on tales of 'dark beasts' that hunt down the sinful I turned to the legends of Whist Hounds prowling their kennels in Wistman's Woods, quite possibly the origin for the fabled 'Beast of Dartmoor'. Ancient oak trees block out light from the full moon, spirits and hounds illuminating the wild, lichen covered boulders below in a ghostly glow. Being a storyteller at heart I've always enjoyed anything with a good narrative, from fairy tales and myths through to novels, films and animations. Naturally I've been drawn into the world of visual storytelling and am now a freelance illustrator who focuses on children's illustrations and comics amongst other artistic works. Living within the national park I'm lucky enough to see the majestic beauty of the moors and the inspiration behind many tales and myths associated with it on a daily basis, further providing me with a rich history of lore to draw upon.'
