ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN PETHERICK (BRITISH 1788-1861)LORD BUTE'S IRONWORKS, RHYMNEY, SOUTH WALESOil on canvas, a pair 42.5 x 56cm (16½ x 22 in.); 38 x 51cm (14 7/8 x 20in.) respectively (2)The Bute Ironworks at Rhymney were established by the Marquis of Bute 1824. They were designed by John Macculloch in an Egyptian Revival style, which had become popular in Great Britain in the early 19th Century. John Petherick was born in South Wales, near the Pen-y-Darren ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil and much of his work depicts the impact of the Industrial Revolution. This does not affect the mirror plate staying securely in position. There are holes to the underside from where the mirror previously sat of feet. Feet are now lacking. LUDWIG DEUTSCH (AUSTRIAN 1855-1935)THE MARKET VENDOROil on canvas Stamped with artist's atelier stamp to stretcher verso60 x 72.5cm (23½ x 28½ in.)Provenance:Sale, Christie's, London, 15 June 2005, lot 55Purchased at the above sale by the present owner Born in Austria, Ludwig Deutsch settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.Capturing exquisite moments of quotidian human life, his work is often described as documented realism. The present work is possibly a preparatory study for the painting 'Le Marchand du Nil' exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in 1910. The painting appeared as an etching by Henri Lafort as part of a portfolio distributed to members of the French Society of Friends of the Arts. It was also engraved and coloured by Auguste Brouet. Condition Report: The canvas has not been lined and there is some undulation to the edges. Surface dirt throughout, but this is most noticeable to the edges around the frame where staining echoes the stretcher marks. In these areas there are also a number of surface scuffs and abrasions with associated light flaking. There are also a number of areas with visible patches of retouching and infilling, largely to the white background. There is a small dent (approx. 6mm) to the middle of the left framing edge together with some associated loss. There is a partial sticker to the upper left corner (visible in catalogue and online illustration). Rubbing, abrasions and some associated flaking to the framing edges. This is heaviest lower left. Some scattered but heavy craquelure in isolated areas, most noticeably to the brown pigment lower centre.Condition Report Disclaimer

Victorian Royal Worcester novelty candle snuffer modelled as Toby (Mr Punch's dog), designed by James Hadley, wearing an orange hat with a feather, white ruff collar with gilt highlights, marks to the underside, 8cm high.CONDITION REPORT: There is a slight roughness to the bottom edge in areas. There is a small chip at the bottom of the ruff (overpainted with grey). This has not been viewed under UV light.
