The note of provenance (from the present owner's mother) reads: "I have had this signed for you as A. C. says (she can't think why) it fetches a bit now, but in the future more so of course. So look on it as an investment." The present owner's mother knew Christie through a mutual friend.

Perkins and his wife lived in Chipping Campden from 1934-39 during which period they would regularly host both Eliot and Hale.

B. C. Jones (1893-1966). Jones (who would marry the classical scholar F. L. Lucas in 1921) was an associate of, and regular correspondent with, several members of the Bloomsbury Group including Virginia Woolf. As well as a novelist, she was a noted reviewer of literary fiction and wrote on Forester in her essay "E. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf", published in 1936.
