Catalan school of the 19th century."Monastery".Oil on cardboard.Size: 27 x 22 cm; 37 x 31 cm (frame). In this canvas the author offers us a mountain landscape at the same time daily and idyllic, with a monastery hidden among the undergrowth. He also gives prominence to the vegetation and the trees that appear on the mountain. This landscape is painted with a markedly atmospheric accent, based on a delicate treatment of colour and the study of natural light. The Catalan school has a great tradition and mastery in landscape painting. Firstly, its proximity to France linked them through friendships with Impressionist artists, who exerted a certain influence on the Catalan school.

Lot 50

Catalan school of the late 19th century."Mountain landscape with figures".Oil on canvas. With annotation on the back "Santasusana", which could refer both to the author and the location (Santasusana is a village located at the foot of the Montseny).Size: 28 x 39 cm; 43 x 54 cm (frame). In this canvas the author offers us a landscape which is both everyday and idyllic at the same time. He gives the protagonism to the vegetation and the light effects that filter through the trees and affect the rest of the elements that make up the image. This landscape is worked with a markedly atmospheric accent, based on a delicate treatment of colour and the study of natural light. The Catalan school has a great tradition and mastery of landscape painting, firstly because of its proximity to France, which linked them through friendships with Impressionist artists, who exerted a certain influence on the Catalan school.

Lot 57

French school of the second half of the 18th century."Portrait of a gentleman.Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.With frame of the 19th century.Measurements: 76 x 60 cm; 91 x 73 cm (frame). The portrait we present here, clear and immediate, can be related to the production of Joseph Duplessis, a prolific French portrait painter known as Peintre du Roi. In this canvas, the artist depicts a portrait of a gentleman with a deep gaze, in a diplomatic attitude, looking directly at the viewer, turning his head slightly towards the front. The sitter is in the foreground, with a long bust, against a neutral, dark background, which makes his presence very striking due to his brightly lit face. In fact, the carefully studied lighting is the main expressive device used by the painter; it is a focused, directed, artificial light that enters the composition from the front and falls directly on the main area of the image, the sitter's face, creating great clarity on his face and clothes and modelling his facial features and anatomical volumes with great naturalism.

Lot 88

Carlos III style cornucopia mirror, ca. 1840-50.Carved and polychrome wood.New moon.Measurements: 120 x 72 cm.The cornucopias were rich mirrors to which supports for candles were added (which usually disappears in the 19th century examples), so that the light from the candles would be multiplied by being reflected on their surface. They were particularly popular in the Baroque period, during the 17th century and much of the 18th century. They were an essential ornament in the great halls of representation which, following the typical theatricality of the Baroque, were full of mirrors and candelabras that produced visual games of all kinds, as well as enriching the room. Since they were pieces of performance furniture, they were made of richly carved and gilded wood, and their frames were decorated with a multitude of delicate relief motifs, worked as if they were sculptures. Cornucopias, like the rest of the mirrors of the Baroque period, could have frames of different shapes and profiles, but they never went beyond the inner profile of the glass, unlike the examples of the Rococo period.

Chest of drawers Carlos IV, pps. s.XIX.Walnut wood, walnut and mahogany veneer, with marquetry.Missing gilt metal handles. In need of restoration.Measurements: 80 x 95 x 43 cm.Chest of drawers of Charles IV style and period. It presents a classic and refined structure. It consists of four wide drawers. It is raised on inverted truncated pyramidal legs. The ornamentation is reduced to geometric marquetry covering practically the entire surface. The sobriety corresponds to a type of furniture that values simplicity and the expression of geometry and structural clarity. The combination of light and dark woods is also characteristic of Charles IV furniture. The slightly protruding centre and the chamfered corners also follow the models of the period.
