An excellent, vintage signed colour 6.5 x 8.5 book weight photograph depicting Bogey in a classic head and shoulders pose wearing a light brown overcoat and trilby hat. Bogart is captured in costume in a publicity shot for the film Casablanca (1942) in which he starred in the role of Rick Blaine. T.L.S., William Golding, one page, oblong 8vo, Bower Chalke, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 24th March n.y., to Mr. Pearce. Golding informs Pearce that 'Salisbury Library will have a bibliography of critical writing on my work, though it's sadly out of date.' and continues 'I seem to remember being called, or miscalled, a Manichee several times, though I can't remember where.' He concludes 'Simon called Peter is right, I think; but it's a long time since I read the novel.' Some very light creasing and staining, just affecting one letter of the signature. G

(postal cancellation of 8th August 1953), to Gillian Stacey. Blyton writes to congratulate her correspondent on her well run library, commenting 'I am so glad to hear of a girl running one, because most of the good ones I have heard about are run by boys. Yours sounds excellent & you have good rules.' Blyton continues to enquire how old her correspondent is, 'are you as old as Ian Stuart, who runs "N" Turnips Library? He is 10.' REMARQUE ERICH MARIA: (1898-1970) German Author of All Quiet on the Western Front (1929). A.L.S., Erich Maria Remarque, one page, 4to, Hotel Steinplatz, Berlin, 9th November 1955, to Kurt Hirschfeld, manager of the Theatre in Zurich, in German. Remarque writes to his correspondent concerning some difficulties in staging a play, '…there is no need for us to be especially ingenious-he is very pleased to have the first performance and he also would have insisted on it. It would only have been possible to have a concurrent performance in Zurich. I will bring to his attention that the theatre has decided to wait with its final decision until after the first performance due to political reasons (whatever these may be-but I think it sounds very good). This would also throw a better light on the theatre since it would not be favourable to admit that the committee thoroughly underrates the Swiss audience.' Remarque continues 'This reminds me of the case of the publisher Alfred Scheg in Berlin….Do not become distr ssed. The fate of this play is becoming more and more similar to the two of my greatest successes, All Quiet on the Western Front and Arch of Triumph. Cocteau informs his correspondent that it has been impossible for him to find an opera, although continues 'the best poems are in the selected pieces published by Gallimard. Le Sang d'un Poete is sold out. I will try to find for you Les E. Terribles.' Some very light, minor creasing, otherwise VG Le Sang d'un Poete (The Blood of a Poet) was an avant-garde film directed by Cocteau in 1930 and was the first part of the Orphic Trilogy. It was first performed in Berlin on 10th October 1929 with Richard Tauber performing in the role of Prince Sou- Chong.

MASSENET JULES: (1842-1912) French Composer. A.M.Q.S., J Massenet, one page, oblong 12mo, Paris, August 1898. In bold fountain pen ink the composer has neatly penned three bars of music, with words, which he identifies as being from Act IV of his opera Sapho. A light band of discoloration appears around the edges of the card, evidently caused by previous framing. G Sapho, an opera in five acts by Massenet, based on the novel of the same name by Alphonse Daudet, had first been performed at the Opera Comique in Paris on 27th November 1897.

D.S., G: Cant., (a good, bold signature, as Archbishop of Canterbury), one page, folio, Whitehall, 6th June 1616. The manuscript document is addressed to 'all Maiors, Sheriffes, Justices of Peace, Vice-Admyralls, Customers & Comptrollers, Searchers, officers of the Portes & all other his Mats. officers & loveinge Subects whom it may concerne' and concerns Sir Henry Frankland of Awldeworke and his son Anthony Frankland, allowing them 'to passe over into the partes beyonnd the Seas' and further stating 'that his sonne may remayne there for the space of three yeares for his experience & knowledge in the languages'. The document also states that the Franklands should be allowed passage 'together wth one servant to imbarque themselves at any of his Mats. Portes that shalbe fittest for their passage and to take wth them such Truncks of apparrell & other necessary provisions (not prohibitted) as they shall have occasion to carry over for his use wthout lett or molestacon. Provided that none of them repaire to the Citty of Rome wthout his Mats. speciall licence first had & obtayned.' Signed at the foot by Abbot and countersigned by Admiral Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk (1561-1626, Lord High Treasurer 1614-18), Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester (1568-1628, English Aristocrat and an important advisor to King James I, Lord Privy Seal 1616-25) and several others. With remnants of seal. A large, although very light, water stain affects part of the text and signatures, all of which remain completely legible. G

Photograph by Louis Baumgartner of St. Gallen and bearing his blindstamp to the lower mount. Signed and inscribed by Pius XII in a typically neat hand in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount, 'To Our dear son Edward D. McKim and to his family, we are very happy to impart a special Apostolic Benediction. Pius pp. XII' and dated 24th August 1945 in his hand. With blind embossed seal to mount. A very light area of minor staining appears at the lower edge, not affecting the image or signature. Otherwise VG Edward D. McKim-Chief Administrative Assistant to American President Harry S. Truman in 1945. McKim had been a close friend of Truman since serving under him in the 129th Field Artillery Regiment from 1917-19.

[MULREADY WILLIAM]: (1786-1863) Irish Painter who designed the illustrations for the first postal stationery, known as Mulready stationery, which was introduced at the same time as the Penny Black in 1840. A pair of One Penny postage Mulready envelopes, each laid down to a page removed from an album to display the front and reverse panels, both addressed to different members of the Robinson family in Yorkshire, each with Maltese Cross postal cancellations, one in red and the other in black, and other postmarks from Durham and Manchester. The manuscript document is addressed to Robert Pryce, executor to Lady Mordant, 'whose Funeralle being to be solemnized agreablie to hir Condicon and degree as a Barones, yowe nevertheles as wee are geven to understand would otherwise order the same in an obscure and priveitt manner, not fitting to a personage of hir degree being A Barones, and besides having left sufficientlie to performe the same in good sort: wherefore in asmuch as ye hath pleased hir Matie. to authorise us by hir Commission under the great seale to exercise the place and authoritie of Erle Marshall: we doe therefore will and require yowe to order hir funeralle agreeable to hir degree and callinge, by the advise and direccon of Mr Garter the principall Kinge at Armes, to whome by his office yt apperteineth, or otherwise to make yr apparance b fore us to showe sufficient cawse of yr. refusall: And wee doe not a little marvell that of yr. self yowe would undertake to appoint Escuchions of Armes or other like thinges of Armorie to be made (as wee understand yowe have done) wthowt the allowance of the said Mr. Garter...' Essex states, 'I pray yow geve order to the keepers of my Park at Chartley that they make this gentleman my good frend Mr Phillips all the sport they can. And if he shall have occasion to use a Brace of Bucks, or one Buck of this season, to require them to delyver the same unto hym.' With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal. D.S., William R, in English, although in his capacity as Prince of Orange, one page, folio, in camp near St. Quintin's Lenneke, 8th September 1693, in Dutch. The manuscript document appoints Casper de Mauregnault to be Captain of the Company of Lt. Col. Alexander Theodorus de Mauregnault in the Regiment of Col. Caieu and charges 'the officers and private soldiers of that same Company to hold and acknowledge the said de Mauregnault as their Captain.' ANNE QUEEN: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland 1702-14. D.S., Anne R, (a good, dark signature), as Queen, at the head, one page, folio, Court at St. James's, 17th March 1708. The attractively penned manuscript document is addressed to John Howe, Paymaster General of Our Guards, Garrisons & Land Forces in Great Britain and is a warrant for the payment of 'the sum of Two thousand Seven hundred Sixty Five Pounds Six Shillings and Eight Pence' to be made to the Duke of Argyll in order that he pay the Fourth Troop of Horse Guards under his command. Countersigned at the foot by Robert Walpole (1676-1745, British Prime Minister 1721-42, Secretary at War 1708-10). A few minor spots of very light foxing, otherwise VG

The partially printed document is a military commission appointing Donald Mackdonald to be a lieutenant in the Highland Regiment of Foot. PRINCESS CHARLOTTE AUGUSTA: (1796-1817) Princess of Wales, daughter of King George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. A.L.S., Charlotte, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to the Earl of Arran. The Princess writes, in a typically hasty and somewhat illegible hand, to invite her correspondent to dine with her the next day, adding that she will allow him to leave at any time to suit himself. Some light age wear and one small stain, just affecting one word of text, but not signature. About VG

An excellent signed 11.5 x 17 photograph by both Edward and Wallis individually, the image showing the couple together in a head and shoulders pose. Signed by both Edward ('Edward, Duke of Windsor') and Wallis ('Wallis Windsor') in bold blue ink to light areas of the background, the Duke adding the date 1956 in his hand. Accompanied by the original envelope addressed to Mr. Hughes, Baggage Master of the Queen Elizabeth. Some very light age wear to the photographer's mount and very minor silvering to the image. DEVONSHIRE DUKE OF: (1720-1764) British Prime Minister 1756-57. Large portion of a D.S., Devonshire, being the lower half of a folio page, n.p. (Treasury Chambers), 17th May 1757. The manuscript document details two payments of £80 each to be made to Hugh Jones 'for apprehending and convicting Roger Llewellin & Samuel Llewellin of Felony and Robbery' and William Boote 'for apprehending and convicting Samuel Fletcher and Samuel Capper of Felony & Burglary'. Also bearing several other countersignatures. One of the rarest of all Prime Minister's signatures. Neatly mounted at the right edge, and with very light, minor age wear at the right edge. About VG
WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. An unusual D.S., Wellington, one page vellum, oblong folio, n.p. (Southampton?), 16th October 1823. The manuscript document is issued by Wellington in his capacity as Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of Southampton and appoints Abel Rouse Dollin to be one of his Deputy Lieutenants. Signed by Wellington at the foot alongside a red wax seal (a few small pieces missing). Some extremely light overall foxing, otherwise VG
