Lot 181

The late 19th century archive of Dr. Henry Clarke M.D. Clarke devoted most of his working life to serving the needs of the inmates of Wakefield Prison. An artist of some ability, he spent holidays in Cardigan where he would record scenes of everyday life. The archive brings to light his apparent skill as a photographer. His technique of combining the photographic process with tradition art forms shows a pioneering style during the late Victorian era. The archive comprises: a group of academic and medical certificates; a group of 56 original glass lantern slides by Dr. Clarke showing Cardigan and environs, and figure and art studies including a self-portrait; 24 original engravings circa 1881; an album of silhouette images by Dr Clarke inscribed Wakefield 1900; a folio of platinotype photographs and hand-drawn artwork illustrating `Daybreak` by Longfellow inscribed Wakefield 1886; a group of 4 sketchbooks containing numerous pencil and ink drawings by Clarke and his daughter with other artwork, photographs, ephemera; an album of press cuttings on Clarke; 12 Welsh landscape photographs by Clarke printed on silk, his brass field microscope and silver-topped ebony walking stick engraved with monogram HC
