A rare example signed by both Queen Victoria & Prince Albert VICTORIA & ALBERT: VICTORIA (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901 & ALBERT (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. A fine A.L.S. by both Queen Victoria (signed with her initials V R) and Prince Albert ('Albert'), seven pages, 8vo, Windsor Castle, 23rd January 1844, to Count Alphonse Mensdorff Pouilly ('My dear Alphonse'), on attractive stationery featuring a colour printed Royal Coat of Arms to the upper left corner, in German. Queen Victoria commences the letter by thanking her cousin for his letter, and continues to wish him happiness on his birthday, commenting 'may you remain as happy as you are now with your dear wife. Who can understand your happiness better than both of us who live together so infinitely happy'. The Queen further states 'I received a long letter from Alexander a few days ago. He seems to be so alone in his garrison. He very much regrets, as we do, that dear Arthur could not follow your example. I heard that he had seen the young lady again' and also informs the Count 'I have had all your portraits lithographed and they turned out very nicely. I will soon send 2 dozen of each of them for you all' and concludes 'Now could I ask you to order me 3 dozen pairs of gloves, but only dark colours'. Prince Albert concludes the letter by writing, also in German, 'I also have to add a few lines in order to express my good wishes for your birthday. You know that they are always truly heartfelt. I also thank you for your last kind letter and remain as always your dear nephew'. With blank integral leaf. Autograph letters written and signed by both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert rarely appear on the market, and the present letter is a particularly charming example with good association. Some very light creasing and a couple of extremely minor, small neat splits to the edges of a couple of folds, otherwise about VG Count Alphonse Mensdorff Pouilly (1810-1894) Austrian Nobleman & Cousin of Queen Victoria.
[PARR CATHERINE]: (1512-1548) Queen of England and of Ireland 1543-47, the last of the six wives of King Henry VIII. A selection of strands of light brown, fair coloured hair, the lock apparently cut from the head of Catherine Parr, loosely contained in a 19th century folded 8vo sheet of notepaper bearing a contemporary annotation in dark ink, in full, 'Katherine Parrs Hair, last wife of Henry VIIIth - cut off in Worcestershire upon the body being exhumed by R. Powell Cotton'. Rare. VG Catherine Parr died, aged around 35 or 36, on 5 September 1548, at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire, from childbed fever, having given birth to her only child, the daughter of her fourth husband, Thomas Seymour, six days earlier. In May 1782, John Locust discovered the coffin of Queen Catherine in the ruins of the Sudeley Castle chapel. He opened the coffin and observed that the body, after 234 years, was in a surprisingly good condition. Reportedly the flesh on one of her arms was still white and moist. After taking a few locks of her hair, he closed the coffin and returned it to the grave. The coffin was opened a few more times in the next ten years, including a disinterment by Colonel Richard Powell Cotton in 1783, when the present hair was apparently removed. Parr's coffin was finally officially reopened in 1817, when nothing but a skeleton remained. Her remains were then moved to the tomb of Lord Chandos whose family owned the castle at that time.

May I fetch you for tea next Saturday? I wd. come at abt. 3. Your loving friend…' Accompanied by an original unsigned pencil drawing by Dodgson, on a slim 8vo piece (with partial printed text to the verso relating to a consecrated burial ground), the image showing a young man standing in a full length pose, with his legs set apart, wearing a hat and with a somewhat astonished expression on his face. The present letter is unpublished, however The Letters of Lewis Carroll, ed. Morton N. Cohen, Vol.II, pages 1114-1116, provide some interesting background to the letter and drawing. Although not meeting Dodgson on the day specified in the present letter, Ursula Mallam had had tea with the writer and his nieces a few weeks earlier, on 27th February, and later recounted the occasion in a letter to Cohen stating, in part, '[Dodgson] invited me to tea in his rooms at Christ Church. He came to fetch me on the appointed day and during the walk to Christ Church he talked about the Alice books….after tea we played writing games….all of it very noisy. A little later he came to tea with us and the games afterwards were much the same sort and included drawing pictures [quite possibly including the present drawing]. Shortly afterwards we left Oxford and I regret that I never met him again.'
'Winston Churchill has rung up…..What can it mean??!!!' DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) British Author. Conclusion of an A.L.S., Daphne, four pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (mid-late 1930s?), [to Foy Quiller-Couch]. The first two pages of Du Maurier's letter are no longer present; in the larger remaining portion the author writes, in part, 'Now, what I really brew upon is this. I find myself in need of a butterfly, and I wonder whether there is any chance of your slipping away for one when the Guardsman's [her husband, Frederick Browning] leave is up…..Could we have put some eggs and a half-side of ham and a packet of tea in a basket, and streaked for Frenchman's creek? Or is it really un-furnished and would our aging bones suffer? I yearn to take the road again. Jeanne has a very good Inn in Wales (private sitting-room and there's a bathroom) with mountainous walks around it. Lundy is still unvisited. Dartmoor & Exmoor are by us untrodden. Write and tell me if there is any remote possibility. If not May, perhaps later on we can achieve it, but its time we set forth again. I have a feeling we are in for a hot dry summer….' Du Maurier also adds two postscripts, in the second stating 'Winston Churchill has rung up to speak to the Guardsman who is out. What can it mean??!!! Tell Mother!'. Some light staining and a number of large tears to the edges of the pages, slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signature. FR Foy Quiller-Couch - daughter of British writer Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), and a life-long friend of Du Maurier. Indeed, Du Maurier was accompanied by Foy Quiller-Couch when she became inspired with the storyline for her novel Jamaica Inn. In 1930, apparently around the time of the present letter, the two ladies were staying at Jamaica Inn and went riding on Bodmin Moor. They became lost in bad weather conditions and apparently sheltered for some time in a derelict cottage on the moor but were eventually led back to Jamaica Inn by their horses. Du Maurier makes a reference to Frenchman's Creek in the present letter - situated at the estuary of Helford River in Cornwall, Frenchman's Creek was the choice of location for Du Maurier and Browning's honeymoon. It also served as the inspiration for her 1941 historical novel set in Cornwall during the reign of King Charles II. The novel was also later made into a film in 1944. Frederick Browning (1896-1965) British Lieutenant General of World War II, remembered for his important role with the First Allied Airborne Army during Operation Market Garden. Husband of Du Maurier from 1932. Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Churchill and Browning encountered each other when the future Prime Minister served as a Major alongside Browning in the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, for a short period during World War I.
